Facial attractiveness has been related to health in both men and women. Certain psychological, physiological, and secondary sex characteristics have been used as accurate markers of hormonal and developmental health. The main objective of this study was to investigate the capacity of women to select males of high reproductive quality based on their facial attractiveness. A total of 66 males were included in the study. Each of them provides a semen sample, and frontal and lateral photographs were ...

The present paper includes a morphological, ecological and biological updating of the three gorgonian associated species of Haplosyllis (Polychaeta, Syllidae) known to date: H. chamaeleon (symbiont with Paramuricea clavata in the Mediterranean), H. anthogorgicola (symbiont with Anthogorgia bocki in the Japanese seas) and H. villogorgicola, a new species living symbiotically with Villogorgia bebrycoides which is only known from Tenerife (Canary Islands, Eastern Central Atlantic). The new species is described ...

Increased production capacity is one of the most important priorities for seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines. In the present study, we used a baculovirus-insect larvae system (considered small, living biofactories) to improve the production of recombinant influenza virus H1N1 hemagglutinin (HA). Insect larvae produced four-fold more HA protein than insect cells per biomass unit (1 g of fresh larvae weight). A single infected Trichoplusia ni larva produced up to 113 μg of soluble and easily purified ...

The allotetraploid Tympanoctomys barrerae has a broad, patchy distribution around salt flats in western Argentina. To gain insights into its phylogenetic relationships, phylogeographical patterns, and origin, seven populations of T. barrerae and its allied taxa were studied through a 1075-bp fragment of cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase I. Matrilineal phylogenetic relationships were explored with maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches. The intraspecific genealogy was inferred by median-joining ...

This work shows results of electrocoagulation of solutions containing arsenic. The continuous flow treatment consisted of an electrocoagulation reactor with two parallel iron plates and a sedimentation basin. The results showed that the electrocoagulation process of a 100 mg/L As(V) solution could decrease the arsenic concentration to less than 2 mg/L in the effluent with a current density of 1.2 A/dm2 and a residence time of around 9 min. Liquid flow was 3 L/h, and the DC current was reversed each ...

When collection of ejaculated sperm samples is not possible, as is the case with wild species, the epididymides of sacrificed wild males become the only possible source of spermatozoa. Mature cauda epididymal spermatozoa display characteristics similar to those of ejaculated sperm cells. The present work proposes a sperm staining technique suitable for the morphometric evaluation of red deer epididymal sperm using a new computerized system. Epididymides from wild animals were extracted no later ...

Asthma is associated with a loss of the structural integrity of airway epithelium and dysfunction of the physical barrier, which protects airways from external harmful factors. Granulocyte activation causes the formation of extracellular traps, releasing web-like structures of DNA and proteins, being important to kill pathogens extracellularly. We investigated whether eosinophils infiltrating airways in an experimental model of asthma would induce eosinophil extracellular traps (EETs) in bronchoalveolar ...

The neurotransmitter glycine is removed from the synaptic cleft by two Na(+)-and Cl(-)-dependent transporters, the glial (GLYT1) and neuronal (GLYT2) glycine transporters. GLYT2 lacks a conserved cysteine in the first hydrophilic loop (EL1) that is reactive to [2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl] methanethiosulfonate (MTSET) in related transporters. A chimeric GLYT2 (GLYT2a-EL1) that contains GLYT1 sequences in this region, including the relevant cysteine, was sensitive to the reagent, and its sensitivity was ...

Purpose: Asthma is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory lung disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness to allergens, airway edema, and increased mucus secretion. Such mucus can be liquefied by recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase), in which efficacy of rhDNase has been well documented in patients with cystic fibrosis, but little studied in asthma. In the present study, we investigated whether rhDNase intranasal administration improved inflammation and pulmonary function in an ...

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the largest felid in the Neotropics, and habitat fragmentation and conversion are severe threats for this species. We used empirical models to identify the suitable habitat and the functional corridors for jaguars to design a strategy to maintain connectivity in the Southern Mayan Forest, which spans the border of Mexico and Guatemala. We used Resource Selection Probability Functions to identify suitable habitat patches that were occupied by jaguars. Then, we used Step ...

Neuroinflammation involves cytokine release, astrocyte reactivity and migration. Neuronal Thy-1 promotes DITNC1 astrocyte migration by engaging αVβ3 Integrin and Syndecan-4. Primary astrocytes express low levels of these receptors and are unresponsive to Thy-1; thus, inflammation and astrocyte reactivity might be necessary for Thy-1-induced responses. Wild-type rat astrocytes (TNF-activated) or from human SOD1G93A transgenic mice (a neurodegenerative disease model) were used to evaluate cell migration, ...

The association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and primary sclerosing cholangitis should be considered a distinct clinical entity. This association involves genetic abnormalities, epidemiological factors (more common in men, with no a geographical pattern) and, commonly, subclinical inflammation, predominance of the right colon (endoscopic and histological), backwash ileitis and rectal sparing. Furthermore, there is an increased risk of colorectal cancer and cholangiocarcinoma. The aim of ...

In recent years, better knowledge of the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has led to a relevant expansion of the therapeutic arsenal for these conditions. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are a family of small molecules that block one or more of the intracellular tyrosine kinases, including JAK-1, JAK-2, JAK-3 and TYK-2. Tofacitinib, a non-selective small molecule JAK inhibitor, and upadacitinib and filgotinib, which are selective JAK-1 inhibitors, have been approved by the US Food ...

Abstract Therapeutic options for the management of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] have been expanding in recent decades. New biological and small molecule therapies have been incorporated into the pharmacological arsenal, allowing a more personalized management, and seeking increasingly strict remission goals. However, the fear of developing adverse events represents one of the most important limitations in deciding its use by patients and by a multidisciplinary team. Despite the risk of hepatotoxicity ...

We propose the use of the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1STST) to evaluate the physical capacity and exertional desaturation one month after discharge in a sample of patients who survived COVID-19 pneumonia. This was a cross-sectional study that collected routine data from consecutive patients admitted to the outpatient program in a public hospital in Chile. Patients were asked to complete a 1STST. Data were analyzed according to those with and without a prolonged hospital stay of >10 days. Eighty-three ...

Cancer has been investigated using various pre-targeting techniques or models focusing on radiobombesin analogues; however, both are not offered together. In this study, nano-bombesin labeling by a pre-targeting system was undertaken to develop an alternative approach for prostate tumor treatment.
