The application of a surface coating on SiC particles is studied as an alternative means of solving problems of reactivity between SiC reinforcements and molten aluminium and problems of low wetting which limit the application of casting routes for fabrication of Al–SiC p composites. The selected active barrier was a ceramic composed of SiO 2 , which was generated by controlled oxidation of the SiC particles. The coating behaves as an active barrier, preventing a direct reaction between molten aluminium ...

This paper describes the INSIDE system, a networked robot system designed to allow the use of mobile robots as active players in the therapy of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). While a significant volume of work has explored the impact of robots in ASD therapy, most such work comprises remotely operated robots and/or well-structured interaction dynamics. In contrast, the INSIDE system allows for complex, semi-unstructured interaction in ASD therapy while featuring a fully autonomous ...

This study sought to evaluate the incidence, predictive factors, and prognostic value of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Very few data exist on the occurrence of NOAF following TAVI. A total of 138 consecutive patients with no prior history of atrial fibrillation (AF) underwent TAVI with a balloon-expandable valve. Patients were on continuous electrocardiogram monitoring until hospital discharge, and NOAF was defined as any episode of AF ...

The present research is centred on the application of oxidation treatments to SiC particles to improve the casting processability of Al–SiC composites by means of a chemical interface control. If a continuous SiO2 layer is generated on the particle surface, the reinforcement particles can be incorporated in a molten aluminium matrix, and the degrading reaction of Al4C3 formation is replaced by other interfacial reactions which improve wettability, avoid particle consumption and increase interface ...

In this work, using supramolecular polyurethanes theories, two polycaprolactone-based polyurethanes with 2-ureido-4-[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) motifs capable of forming quadruple hydrogen bonds were synthetized and characterized, focusing our attention on their capability to show thermally activated shape-memory response. In particular, 1H NMR analyses confirmed the chemical structure of the supramolecular polyurethanes, while DSC showed their totally amorphous morphology. DMTA in tensile mode was used ...

Present research studies the deposition of electrical conductive coatings on aluminium matrix composites that have 75 vol% of SiC particles (AlSiC composites) to be used for electronics packaging. Ni(P)–Au multilayer coatings were produced by electroless plating, and continuous and well adhered coatings have been developed. Coatings were characterised using microstructural and micromechanical techniques (microhardness and nanoindentation). Corrosion tests in aggressive environments were also applied ...

The epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infections is highly dynamic as new strains continue to emerge worldwide. Here we present a detailed analysis of a new C. difficile strain (ICC-45) recovered from a cancer patient in Brazil that died from severe diarrhea. A polyphasic approach assigned a new PCR-ribotype and PFGE macrorestriction pattern to strain ICC-45, which is toxigenic (tcdA(+), tcdB(+) and ctdB(+)) and classified as ST41 from MLST Clade 2 and toxinotype IXb. Strain ICC-45 encodes for ...

Abstract To date and worldwide, most business activities in the agribusiness sectors have focused on increasing productive efficiency to the detriment of the environmental impact of these activities, despite close connection that exist between agribusinesses and natural resources. This paper argues that knowledge and innovation management (KIM) can play a key role in fostering and managing creativity in the agribusiness sector. To test this assumption, an empirical model linking KIM with employee ...

The microstructure evolution during ageing treatment at 170 and 190 °C of AA2009/SiC composites, reinforced with 15 vol.% particulates and whiskers, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Besides θ′ and S′ phases, the typical hardening precipitates on Al–Cu–Mg alloys, it was found the presence of Ω and σ (Al5Cu6Mg2) phases in the matrix. σ phase was only found in the matrix of particulate composite, while Ω phase appeared in both. This phase has not been previously observed in Al matrix ...

The effect of reinforcement morphology on metastable precipitation in AA2009 matrix composite reinforced with 15% volume of SiC has been studied. AA2009 is a special formulation Al–Cu–Mg alloy for discontinuously reinforced aluminium (DRA) whose ageing behaviour and precipitation kinetics are not well defined. The ageing kinetics for this material have been evaluated at two different ageing temperatures (170 and 190 °C). Hardness peaks in the two different precipitation sequences existing in the matrix ...

Abstract Background The discovery of functionally relevant KRAS effectors in lung and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (LUAD and PDAC) may yield novel molecular targets or mechanisms amenable to inhibition strategies. Phospholipids availability has been appreciated as a mechanism to modulate KRAS oncogenic potential. Thus, phospholipid transporters may play a functional role in KRAS-driven oncogenesis. Here, we identified and systematically studied the phospholipid transporter PITPNC1 and its controlled ...

Artificial intelligence (AI) is delivering major advances in the construction engineering sector in this era of building information modelling, applying data collection techniques based on urban image analysis. In this study, building heights were calculated from street-view imagery based on a semantic segmentation machine learning model. Many Gram-negative bacteria produce N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), quorum sensing (QS) molecules that can be enzymatically inactivated by quorum quenching (QQ) processes; this approach is considered an emerging antimicrobial alternative. In this study, kinetic parameters of several AHLs hydrolyzed by penicillin acylase from Streptomyces lavendulae (SlPA) and aculeacin A acylase from Actinoplanes utahensis (AuAAC) have been determined. Both enzymes catalyze efficiently the amide bond hydrolysis in ...

In a previous study we demonstrated that a simple training programme improved quality indicators of Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) achieving the recommended benchmarks. However, the long-term effect of this intervention is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of OGDs performed 3 years after of having completed a training programme. A comparative study of 2 cohorts was designed as follows: Group A included OGDs performed in 2016 promptly after a training programme and Group ...

ABSTRACT Background In chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, increased levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) are associated with cardiovascular mortality. The relationship between FGF23 and heart hypertrophy has been documented, however, it is not known whether FGF23 has an effect on vasculature. Vascular smooth muscle cells VSMCs may exhibit different phenotypes; our hypothesis is that FGF23 favours a switch from a contractile to synthetic phenotype that may cause vascular dysfunction. Our ...

Lower ratios indicate an inadequate RV contractile response to increased afterload. This study sought to evaluate the prognostic significance of RV-PA coupling in patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR) who were undergoing transcatheter tricuspid valve repair or replacement (TTVR).The study investigators calculated RV-PA coupling ratios for patients enrolled ...
