This paper studies the impact of verified emissions publications in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) on the market value of participating companies. Using event study methodology on a unique sample of 368 listed companies, we show that verified emissions only resulted in statistically significant market responses when the carbon price was high and allowance scarcity was anticipated. The cross-section analysis of abnormal returns surrounding the publication of verified emissions shows ...

Abstract In this study we examine, within the context of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme, whether firms' ability to pass through carbon costs affects the link between carbon emission and corporate financial performance. Our results, controlling for the endogenous relationship between carbon emission and financial performance, and robust to a number of alternative financial performance measures, demonstrate that good carbon emission performance does not always pay off. In fact, we find ...

This article studies the relationship between firm-level emissions-to-cap ratio (ETC) and environmental abatement, by using a unique and extensive data set of 10 762 installations covered by the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) matched to 5931 firms. We find that a shortage of emissions allowances is related to more abatement in later years while a surplus of emissions allowances results in worse subsequent environmental performance. This finding underscores the importance of reducing ...

Two approaches to handling the computational requirements of computer-aided design problems are considered. One approach is to take advantage of the hierarchical nature of circuit design and develop hierarchical CAD algorithms. Another involves the use of parallel processing and development of parallel CAD algorithms. How these two approaches can be combined to speed up various CAD applications is discussed. Toward this goal, two general problems in scheduling are solved: parallelizable independent ...

The primary purpose of the study was to identify event-based prospective-memory tasks that provide sensitive and reliable tools for assessing effects of normal aging in prospective-memory performance. Four prospective-memory tasks were selected from the literature or were newly developed, with the tasks differing on various dimensions that, for theoretical reasons or based on previous evidence, might determine task sensitivity to age effects on prospective-memory performance: perceptual saliency ...

Dermal exposure, primarily to pesticides, has been measured for almost half a century. Compared with exposure by inhalation, limited progress has been made towards standardisation of methods of measurement and development of biologically relevant exposure measures. It is suggested that the absence of a consistent terminology and a theoretical model has been an important cause of this lack of progress. Therefore, a consistent terminology based on a multicompartment model for assessment of dermal ...

Pulmonary ventilatory function and various biological indices have been investigated in three groups of workers exposed to cadmium dust (women with less than 20 years' exposure [E1], men with less than 20 years' exposure [E2], and men with more than 20 years' exposure [E3]) and in three matched control groups. The current airborne Cd dust concentration in the workrooms was below the actual American threshold limit value (200μg/cu m). A slight but significant reduction in forced vital capacity, in forced ...

Sinusoidal liver cells were isolated from the livers of 3-, 12-, 30-, and 36-month-old female BN/ BiRij rats by enzymatic digestion. The Kupffer cells in the sinusoidal eel suspensions were purified by centrifugal elutriation and kept in maintenance culture for periods of up to about 3 weeks. The viability and yield of Kupffer cells per gram of body weight did not change with the age of the donor rat. The ultrastructural, cytochemical, and functional characteristics of Kupffer cells as observed ...

There are many indications that the functional capacity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) declines with age. The aim of this study was to investigate the cellular basis of age-related changes in the clearance function of the RES. The experiments were focused mainly on Kupffer and endothelial cells of the liver which represent a major part of the RES and are primarily responsible for clearance of colloidal material from the circulation. The clearance capacity of the RES was tested clinically ...

Kupffer cells and other sinusoidal cells were isolated after perfusion and incubation with pronase and collagenase of pieces of liver tissue obtained from organ donors. The resulting cell preparations contained endothelial cells, Kupffer cells and fat-storing cells as well as considerable numbers of leucocytes. Attempts to purify the different sinusoidal cell types by density centrifugation and centrifugal elutriation were successful only for Kupffer cells. Kupffer cells, in contrast to endothelial ...

This paper describes a new method (DREAM) for structured, semi-quantitative dermal exposure assessment for chemical or biological agents that can be used in occupational hygiene or epidemiology. It is anticipated that DREAM could serve as an initial assessment of dermal exposure, amongst others, resulting in a ranking of tasks and subsequently jobs. DREAM consists of an inventory and evaluation part. Two examples of dermal exposure of workers of a car-construction company show that DREAM characterizes ...

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a well-established treatment at the end stage of a degenerated knee joint. This operative treatment generally relieves pain, improves physical function, and has a high level of patient satisfaction, especially in the elderly. Younger patients, however, are demanding and have a higher level of physical activity compared to elderly patients. One could therefore expect more mechanical problems such as prosthetic loosening and polyethylene wear after long-term follow- ...

Summary Aged rats are more susceptible to endotoxin-induced effects, including microthrombosis and platelet aggregation, than are young rats. To investigate whether changes in the fibrinolytic system might be involved, we investigated the fibrinolytic activity in plasma euglobulin fractions and tissues (lung and heart) of young (6-months old) and aged (24-months old) rats under baseline conditions and after challenge with endotoxin. Aged rats had lower plasma levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator ( ...

Abstract Since the proposal to define a separate subgroup of inborn errors of metabolism involved in the biosynthesis and remodelling of phospholipids, sphingolipids and long chain fatty acids in 2013, this group is rapidly expanding. This review focuses on the disorders involved in the biosynthesis of phospholipids. Phospholipids are involved in uncountable cellular processes, e.g. as structural components of membranes, by taking part in vesicle and mitochondrial fusion and fission or signal transduction. ...

In this paper we describe the influence of ageing on responses to intravenously-injected endotoxin in two rat strains. Old age had no apparent effect on the absorption of 51Cr-labelled endotoxin from either jejunum or colon. Notwithstanding, aged animals appeared much more sensitive than their young counterparts to the lethal effects of intravenously injected endotoxin. Old animals exhibited virtually 100% mortality over the dose range 1–4 mg/100 g body weight while only sporadic deaths were seen ...
