Chia seeds have a high oil content that consists primarily of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for humans. The technique used for chia oil extraction can be influences the final quality of the oil; thus, it is highly important to study the different extraction techniques. This study aimed to determine the extraction yield from different techniques and to evaluate the oils obtained. Chia oils were extracted by pressing, cold solvent and by supercritical CO2 with/without ultrasound ...

The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) provides sympathetic input to the head and neck, its relation with mandible, submandibular glands, eyes (second and third order control) and pineal gland being demonstrated in laboratory animals. In addition, the SCG’s role in some neuropathies can be clearly seen in Horner’s syndrome. In spite of several studies published involving rats and mice, there is little morphological descriptive and comparative data of SCG from large mammals. Thus, we investigated the ...

This study evaluated different techniques for surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) according to the type of transverse maxillary deficiency using computed tomography (CT). Six adult patients with bilateral transverse maxillary deficiencies underwent SARME. The patients were equally divided into three groups: Group I, maxillary atresia in both the anterior and posterior regions; Group II, greater maxillary atresia in the anterior region; and Group III, increased maxillary atresia in ...

The aim of the study was to evaluate and correlate masticatory efficiency (ME) and maximum bite force (MBF) in adult individuals of both genders with normal occlusion. The study was conducted in a university research centre. ME and MBF were evaluated in 55 adults (27 men and 28 women) with normal occlusion. All subjects chewed four fuchsin capsules (two on the right and two on the left molar region) for 15 chewing cycles with a 3-min interval between capsules. The concentration of fuchsin in the capsules ...

In this article, we propose an analytical tool, named the Workload Profile Diagnosis ( WPD) method, to evaluate the performance and quality of incident management (IM) systems in information technology (IT) service factories. Based on the normalization of ticket assignment delay and resolution time by their respective service-level agreement, the method computes and plots the spreading of ticket data on a log-log chart. By comparing the actual and desired distribution values in specific areas, the WPD ...

This article offers an overview of the state of the art in object-oriented (OO) metrics as well as some new contributions. The usefulness of metrics is reviewed. The inappropriateness of "traditional" metrics to encompass development under the OO paradigm is discussed. A framework for classifying metrics is suggested. Metrics are classified along two vectors: category and granularity, the usefulness and rationale behind each category are presented. Candidate metrics are suggested within the proposed ...

Films and coatings manufactured with bio-based renewable materials, such as biopolymers and essential oils, could be a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for protecting and preserving agricultural products. In this work, we developed films and coatings from pectin and chitosan to protect strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) from spoilage and microbial contamination. We developed three coatings containing equal amounts of glycerol and Sicilian lemon essential oil (LEO) nanoemulsion. We identified ...

Hair follicle (HF) development and growth are dependent on epithelial-mesenchymal interactions (EMIs). Dermal papilla (DP) cells are recognized as the key inductive mesenchymal player, but the ideal source of receptive keratinocytes for human HF regeneration is yet to be defined. We herein investigated whether human interfollicular epidermal keratinocytes with stem-like features (EpSlKCs), characterized by a α6bri/CD71dim expression, can replace human hair follicular keratinocytes (HHFKCs) for the recreation ...

A fluvial drainage system associated with an incised valley developed during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was identified. Two high-resolution 2D and 2.5D geophysical profiles using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) show a Pleistocene fluvial system's former ...

Ascorbate peroxidases (APX, EC 1.1.11.1) are class I heme-peroxidases, which catalyze the conversion of H2O2 into H2O, using ascorbate as a specific electron donor. Previously, the presence of eight Apx genes was identified in the nuclear genome of rice (Oryza sativa), encoding isoforms that are located in different sub-cellular compartments. Herein, the generation of rice transgenic plants silenced for either both or each one of the cytosolic Apx1 and Apx2 genes was carried out in order to investigate ...

The samples were characterized by Rutherford backscattering (RBS) to obtain the film's composition, ...

Nanotechnological developments, including fabrication and use of magnetic nanomaterials, are growing at a fast pace. Magnetic nanoparticles are exciting tools for use in healthcare, biological sensors, and environmental remediation. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has a high incidence in older intact dogs. Due to the increased prostatic oxidative stress and hormonal imbalance of BPH, sperm damage can arise, such as sperm morphological alterations and DNA fragmentation. Ten dogs were assigned to two experimental groups: dogs without BPH (control; n = 5) and dogs diagnosed with BPH (n = 5), based on clinical ...

Abstract. This study investigates the processes and conditions favouring the formation of nanoparticles (diameter<10 nm) which are frequently observed on high mountains reaching the low free troposphere. This was done through an analysis of a data set collected at Izaña Global Atmospheric Watch Observatory (Canary Islands; 2367 m above sea level). This high mountain supersite is located well above the stratocumulus layer characteristic of the subtropical oceanic tropospheres. At night, when the ...
