This paper presents epidemiological, laboratory, and clinical data on 12 years of dengue virus activity in the State of Rio de Janeiro from the time the disease was first confirmed virologically in April 1986 through April 1998. DEN-1 and DEN-2 viruses are the serotypes circulating in the state and were responsible for the epidemics reported during the last 12 years. The results published here show both the impact of dengue virus infections on the population and laboratory advances that have improved ...

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales are frequently involved in healthcare-associated infections worldwide. The objectives of this study were to investigate (i) the frequency of the main genes encoding carbapenemases, 16S rRNA methylases and aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs) as well as the mcr gene and (ii) the clonal relationship of enterobacteria isolates resistant to carbapenems and aminoglycosides from colonisation and infection in patients from hospitals in northeastern Brazil.Antimicrobial ...

The work aimed to evaluate the influence of different coffee farming systems in soil microbial biomass and activity. The experimental design consisted in randomized blocks in split plot, with five repetitions. Two seasons were evaluated, the first in April and the second in July 2015. The treatments consisted of three coffee cultivation systems and two control areas: 1) Coffee intercropped with trees species and Urochloa cv. decumbens; 2) Coffee intercropped with Urochloa cv. decumbens; 3) Coffee ...

The use of biodiversity surrogates is often suggested to increase the cost-effectiveness of biomonitoring programs, as this demands less time and taxonomic expertise. In addition, the detection of multi-taxon associations is a first step toward a better understanding of how organisms interact with each other. Such a multi-taxon association is termed a congruence, and can be detected through measuring the similarity in the distributional patterns shown by different biological groups. To assess the ...

Abstract This work adopts sustainable entrepreneurship as its scope of analysis, focusing on sustainable success through startups with operational excellence, technological innovation (TI) and whose business model aligns with the assumptions of circular economy (CE). By applying certain characteristics of the natural resource‐based view (NRBV) in the context of foodtech startups, this study assesses both TIs and CE assumptions adopted by Brazilian foodtech startups. We interviewed managers and owners ...

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. The first-line treatment of this disease is still based on pentavalent antimonial drugs that have a high toxicity profile, which could induce parasitic resistance. Therefore, there is a critical need to discover more effective and selective novel anti-leishmanial agents. In this context, thiohydantoins are a versatile class of substances due to their simple synthesis and several biological activities. In this ...

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Leishmania species. Available therapeutic options have several limitations. The drive to develop new, more potent, and selective antileishmanial agents is thus a major goal. Herein we report the synthesis and the biological activity evaluation against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis of nine 4,8-dimethoxynaphthalenyl chalcones. Compound ((E)-1-(4,8-dimethoxynaphthalen-1-yl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one), 4f, was ...

Corn (Zea mays L.) is among the most produced crops in intercropping systems, mainly due to its architecture and ecophysiology. In intercropping systems, crop management should be planned to avoid interspecific competition for production factors such as water, light and nutrients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics, nutritional status and grain yield of corn intercropped with dwarf pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L.) in different arrangements of plants. The treatments consisted ...

The healthcare industry relies heavily on a robust medical infrastructure but generates sensitive data about patients whose confidentiality and integrity protection must be guaranteed. But, although the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) facilitates the interconnection of medical devices, software applications, and health systems, it also introduces vulnerabilities for adversaries to exploit. Moreover, in recent years, integrating machine learning (ML) into intrusion detection systems (IDS) have shown ...

The currently available treatment options for leishmaniasis are associated with high costs, severe side effects, and high toxicity. In previous studies, thiohydantoins demonstrated some pharmacological activities and were shown to be potential hit compounds with antileishmanial properties. The present study further explored the antileishmanial effect of acetyl-thiohydantoins against Leishmania amazonensis and determined the main processes involved in parasite death. We observed that compared to ...

Abstract Catharanthus roseus leaves produce a range of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (MIAs) that include low levels of the anticancer drugs vinblastine and vincristine. The MIA pathway displays a complex architecture spanning different subcellular and cell type localizations, and is under complex regulation. As a result, the development of strategies to increase the levels of the anticancer MIAs has remained elusive. The pathway involves mesophyll specialized idioblasts where the late unsolved biosynthetic ...

Abstract Available treatments for leishmaniasis have been widely used since the 1940s but come at a high cost, variable efficacy, high toxicity, and adverse side-effects. 3,3′,5,5′-Tetramethoxy-biphenyl-4,4′-diol (TMBP) was synthesized through laccase-catalysis of 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and displayed antioxidant and anticancer activity, and is considered a potential drug candidate. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the anti-leishmanial effect of TMBP against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania ( ...

The emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) presents new challenges to both clinicians and public health authorities.
