The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in Brazilian college students. A questionnaire was administered to 2,396 students. Seventy-three percent of women (mean age 21.94 ± 5 years) and 27% of men (mean age 22.41 ± 4.8 years) answered the questionnaire. The anamnestic index was used to classify the volunteers according to TMD severity degree. The results showed a higher percentage of men without TMD (43.74%) (p < 0.05, Chi-square test). The women ...

Currently there is a growing interest in the development of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters that may be useful for assessing the neutron flux contribution on the doses in radiotherapy due to neutrons produced in the interaction of megavoltage photon beams. In this work, OSL responses of MgB4O7:Ce,Li with 11B are presented for some photon beams, including 6 MV and 10 MV. For 10 MV, the behavior of the phosphor containing 10B was also evaluated. The material with 10B exhibited an ...

There are several routes employed for the production of synthetic magnesium tetraborate, for example, sol–gel method, combustion, wet reaction synthesis, solid-state route and precipitation (crystal growth). The most commonly used synthesis methods are the wet reaction (precipitation) and solid-state synthesis; both production routes are efficient, but is very difficult to find a direct comparison for them. The present work proposes a direct comparison of both production routes used for magnesium ...

Abstract From a genomic library enriched for AG/TC repeats, eight polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for Ceiba pentandra , a pan‐tropical forest tree. Polymorphism was evaluated using a panel of 74 adult trees. Using automated fluorescence detection, a total of 112 alleles was detected with an average of 14 alleles per locus. All microsatellite loci showed very high levels of genetic information content, with expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.814 to 0.895. These microsatellite ...

Cellulosic ethanol is one the most prominent technologies capable of replacing the use of fossil fuels in an observable horizon of technological development. The complexity of plant biomass, however, continues to challenge our ability to convert it into biofuels efficiently. Highly complex and cross-linked polysaccharides, hydrophobic and protein adsorbent polymers, and crystalline supramolecular structures comprise some of the structures that shield the plant cell contents (and the shield structures ...

FAdo is an ongoing project which aims to provide a set of tools for symbolic manipulation of formal languages. To allow high-level programming with complex data structures, easy prototyping of algorithms, and portability (to use in computer grid systems for example), are its main features. Our main motivation is the theoretical and experimental research, but we have also in mind the construction of a pedagogical tool for teaching automata theory and formal languages. For the graphical visualization ...

Coniferyl aldehyde dehydrogenase (CALDH) catalyzes the oxidation of coniferyl aldehyde to ferulic acid. Because ferulic acid has a relevant role in the structure and recalcitrance of the cell wall, inhibition of CALDH can reduce its levels and increase the digestibility of lignocellulosic biomass. We prospected in silico a selective inhibitor of CALDH of Zea mays. The ZmaysCALDH gene was identified by homology with the corresponding gene of Arabidopsis thaliana. The sequence was translated and analyzed, ...

Biomass delignification is a crucial condition for the effective production of fermentable sugars from lignocellulosic materials. Here, an effective method was used to pretreat lignocellulosic materials using hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAC) solution. The pretreatment of maize straw, sugarcane bagasse and eucalyptus bark with HPAC removed 45 to 75% of lignin and improved from 2.1 to 20.8-fold the saccharification process. Delignification caused by HPAC increased the enzyme adsorption capacities ...

Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass generates a wide variety of lignin-related compounds (LRCs) derived from lignin depolymerization, which inhibit the enzymatic saccharification. Here, the effects of different LRCs were evaluated on cellulase activity for the hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose. Maximum activation of 110% on microcrystalline cellulose conversion by cellulases was observed with 30 mM syringic acid, whereas 20 mM ferulic acid increased it by 68%. Conversely, maximum inhibition ...

Increasing greenhouse gas emissions and diminishing supplies of fossil-derived fuels underline the need for environmentally sustainable energy resources. Lignocellulose, more generically named simply as plant biomass, represents one of the most abundant renewable resources for biofuels. This renewable biomass source is abundant, highly accessible, relatively cheap and diversifies ...

Urochloa spp. are excellent perennial forages, and the identification of superior genotypes depends on the selection of many characteristics under complex genetic control, with high cost and time‐consuming evaluation. Therefore, the use of tools such as multivariate analysis and diallel analyses could contribute to improving the efficiency of breeding programs. ...
