Objective. The side effects of opioids have been widely investigated, but it is unknown whether the subjective effects of mu agonists and mixed action opioids produce similar symptom profiles. This study examined the structure and predictive validity of somatic and cognitive/affective side-effect profiles of morphine and pentazocine using the Somatic Side Effects Questionnaire and the Cognitive and Affective Side Effects Questionnaire.

We describe the recent discovery of Alcathoe bat, Myotis alcathoe, at locations in the south and north of England. First described in 2001 from individuals caught in Greece, the species' known range has steadily been extended across much of Europe. Its presence in the UK was confirmed by mtDNA (ND1) and microsatellite analysis of wing biopsy samples collected between 2003–2009, primarily at swarming sites. Morphological and echolocation call data are consistent with the genetic interpretation. The ...

Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of olfactory absorption of two commonly used therapeutic essential oils on sensory and affective responses to experimentally induced pain. Methods: A sex-balanced (13 men and 13 women) randomized crossover design was used to obtain pre- and posttreatment change scores for quantitative sensory ratings of contact heat, pressure, and ischemic pain across separate inhalation treatment conditions using essential oil of lavender, essential ...

The Grampian and Appin groups of the southwestern Monadhliath Mountains form the earliest known syn-rift sequences of the Scottish central Highlands. They were likely to have formed in an intracontinental setting and represent deposition of mixed clastic and carbonate shallow and deep marine strata. The Grampian Group of the southern Monadhliath Mountains was deposited during a period of initial basin rifting (NW–SE extension) followed by a phase of thermal subsidence. Syn-rift sediments comprise ...

Despite the prevalence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and micro organisations, comparatively little is known about how such organisations approach occupational safety and health (OSH). Research has tended to present a negative picture of OSH practices in smaller organisations. This paper discusses some of the challenges to researching OSH in SMEs and micro organisations and how these challenges can be overcome. It draws lessons and experiences from a qualitative study involving 149 structured ...

Abstract With the decline of many of the world’s fisheries, increased regulation, including marine protected areas (MPA), forms an increasingly important role in promoting sustainable resource use. Here, we present a novel “real-time” genetic monitoring programme used to protect the depleted Norwegian coastal cod stock (NCC) in an MPA during the spawning season, while a fishery targeted at the sustainable Northeast Arctic cod stock (NEAC) operates immediately outside. In the period 2009–2016, >6800 ...

Abstract Anatomical studies report a large proportion of fine myelinated fibers in the primate pyramidal tract (PT), while very few PT neurons (PTNs) with slow conduction velocities (CV) (<~10 m/s) are reported electrophysiologically. This discrepancy might reflect recording bias toward fast PTNs or prevention of antidromic invasion by recurrent inhibition (RI) of slow PTNs from faster axons. We investigated these factors in recordings made with a polyprobe (32 closely-spaced contacts) from motor cortex ...

The half-life of protactinium-231 has been determined by a combination of total α-assay and α-pulse analysis using solutions prepared by dissolution of various protactinium penta- and tetrahalides in concentrated nitric acid. The specific activity of protactinium-231 is found to be 1·062 ± 0·0076 α dmin−1mg−1, equivalent to a half-life of 32,340 ± 230 years.
