(210)Pb-dated sediment cores taken from lakes on the Falkland Islands, the South Orkney Islands, and the Larsemann Hills in Antarctica were analyzed for fly ash particles to assess the temporal record of contamination from high temperature fossil-fuel combustion sources. Very low, but detectable, levels were observed in the Antarctic lakes. In the Falkland Island lakes, the record of fly ash extended back to the late-19th century and the scale of contamination was considerably higher. These data, ...

Abstract In the presence of maternal asthma, we have previously reported reduced placental blood flow, decreased cortisol metabolism, and reductions in fetal growth in response to maternal asthma and asthma exacerbations. We have proposed that these changes in placental function and fetal development may be related to activation of proinflammatory pathways in the placenta in response to maternal asthma. In the present study, we examined the influence of maternal asthma severity, inhaled glucocorticoid ...

As an exceptionally potent antimitotic macrolide, altohyrtin A/spongistatin 1 shows great promise in cancer chemotherapy but its extreme scarcity in the natural sponges has halted its further preclinical development. A highly stereocontrolled total synthesis, which exploits boron-mediated aldol bond constructions, has been realized to provide, for the first time, a useful amount of synthetic material.

Summary The superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) is an elastic structure that during maximal exercise appears to operate close to its functional limits. The biomechanical and biochemical responses to exercise, injury, and healing are still poorly understood but ongoing research is providing valuable new information which is addressed in this review. It appears that the SDFT matures early, after which time it has limited ability to adapt to stress and undergoes progressive degeneration. Focal ...

SummaryThe predominant initial lesion induced by 125I decay in DNA is a double-strand DNA break comprising a ‘mini deletion’ of up to several base pairs (bp). However, Southern analysis of the structure of 125I decay-induced HPRT mutants in Chinese hamster ovary cells revealed that most of the mutants are deletions of thousands of bps. A similar predominance of substantial deletions was also found in X-ray-induced mutants.KeywordsmutagenesisHPRT locus125I decay

Arachidonic acid (AA, 0.125-2.0 mg kg-1) administered intravenously to male Wistar rats produced a dose-dependent fall in diastolic blood pressure. However AA (0.125-1.0 mg kg-1) injected into the autoperfused hindquarters via the aorta produced a dose-dependent increase in perfusion pressure. Both these responses to AA were inhibited by indomethacin (5 mg kg-1). The thromboxane A2 receptor antagonist AH23848 (5 mg kg-1, i.v.) inhibited pressor responses to AA in the autoperfused hindquarters, but potentiated ...

There is considerable confusion of terminology regarding the group of diseases known as “Hand-Schüller-Christian disease,” “Letterer-Siwe disease,” and “eosinophilic granuloma of bone.” This confusion might be expected as a result of varying concepts of their pathogenesis. The relationship of lipoid to the conditions, which was emphasized by Rowland (1) has been reflected in the widespread use of terms designating the presence of lipoid material in the lesions. Since reticuloendothelial cells also are ...

This study investigated the effects of N-nitro-L-arginine and haemoglobin on responses of aortic rings (10 g resting tension) from 2-week streptozotocin-diabetic and control rats. N-Nitro-L-arginine (0.1 mM) or haemoglobin (10 μM) potentiated constrictor responses of aortae from both groups of rats to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or nonadrenaline. They also overcame the tachyphylaxis which occurred on the second exposure to 5-HT. Following constriction of aortae with 5-HT or noradrenaline, acetylcholine ...

SUMMARY 1. Vascular responses to endothelin‐1 (ET‐1) and noradrenaline (NA) were measured in isolated Krebs'‐perfused kidneys of 2 week old streptozotocin‐diabetic and non‐diabetic rats. 2. Bolus injections of either ET‐1 or NA caused dose‐dependent increases in perfusion pressure. Responses to ET‐1 (10–60 ng/g kidney), but not to NA (0.001–10 μg/g kidney), were significantly potentiated in kidneys of diabetic rats compared with non‐diabetics. 3. Indomethacin significantly attenuated responses to NA ( ...

Abstract Dose-response curves were obtained to bolus injections of noradrenaline (NA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in blood and Krebs-perfused kidneys of male Wistar rats. Vasoconstrictor responses to both NA and 5-HT were significantly attenuated in blood-perfused kidneys of alloxan-treated 14 day diabetic rats compared with non-diabetic animals. Responses to low doses of NA were also significantly attenuated in Krebs-perfused kidneys from diabetic rats but responses to 5-HT were augmented. Dose- ...

Bleeding from the alimentary tract is an important manifestation of significant disease in all age groups but particularly so in infants and children. Although the astute pediatrician often is able to suggest accurately the source of the blood as a result of careful evaluation of history and physical findings, the roentgen examination is of great value in providing information concerning the exact location and appearance of any lesion. The roentgenologist, therefore, is directly concerned with the ...
