Abstract Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and prostate cancer (PCa) are not only common diseases, but share many risk factors. To date, only a few studies have explored the relationship between CAD and PCa risk, with conflicting results. Methods: The four-year REDUCE study tested dutasteride 0.5 mg daily for PCa risk reduction in men with prostate specific antigen (PSA) of 2.5 to 10.0 ng/mL and a negative biopsy. Among men who underwent at least one on-study biopsy (n = 6,729; 82.8%), the association ...

Oxidative stress has been implicated in a variety of acute and chronic neurologic conditions, including epilepsy. Both the kainic acid and pilocarpine are useful models of temporal lobe epilepsy in rodents. As an index of lipid peroxidation the level thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was measured after the status epileticus induced by pilocarpine or kainic acid. In hippocampus there was a slight enhancement in the TBARS levels measured 12-14 h after the end of status epileticus induced ...

Heat transfer coefficient is a basic parameter used in the calculation of convective heat transfer problems. Due to the importance of the experimental measurements for the development of convective heat transfer, this review identifies, classifies and describes the experimental methods used for the measurement of heat transfer coefficient. The methods were classified into five major groups: (1) direct method, (2) transient method, (3) Wilson method, (4) heat/momentum/mass transfer analogy method and ( ...

While the standard regimen of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 includes two doses administered 3 weeks apart, some public health authorities are spacing these doses, raising concerns about efficacy. However, data indicate that a single dose can be up to 90% effective starting 14 days post-administration. To assess the mechanisms contributing to protection, we analyzed humoral and T cell responses three weeks after a single BNT162b2 dose. We observed weak neutralizing activity elicited in ...

There is a broad spectrum of eye involvement in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The majority of descriptions are presented as case reports that include mostly APS patients secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with no compelling evidence in primary APS (PAPS). This study aimed to describe ocular manifestations in our well-defined PAPS cohort (APS-Rio) and then perform a systematic literature review (SLR) of ocular manifestations in patients with APS or positivity to aPL without SLE.

Antimalarials are commonly prescribed in medical practice for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, as well as malaria. They are generally well-tolerated, but side effects, although infrequent, are well known. The antimalarial chloroquine diphosphate may be associated with a bluish-gray to black hyperpigmentation of the oral mucosa, mainly on the hard palate. In this report we described five additional cases of palate hyperpigmentation related to the chronic use of chloroquine ...

The aim of the present study was to compare four methods of fixation in mandibular body fractures. Mechanical and photoelastic tests were performed using polyurethane and photoelastic resin mandibles, respectively. The study groups contained the following: (I), two miniplates of 2.0 mm; (II) one 2.0 mm plate and an Erich arch bar; (III) one 2.4 mm plate and an Erich arch bar, and (IV) one 2.0 mm plate and one 2.4 mm plate. The differences between the mean values were analyzed using Tukey's test, the ...

Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver is characterized by neoplastic mucinous and/or biliary epithelium surrounded by ovarian-type stroma. Immunohistochemical studies have shown that the ovarian-type stroma expresses estrogen receptor, suggesting potential hormonal responsiveness. The molecular biology of mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver remains poorly studied.

Abstract The use of organic solvents as electrolytic medium in electrophoresis has become an important alternative for the analysis of compounds that exhibit low or no solubility in water. In recent years, nonaqueous electrophoresis has been extensively explored in conventional capillary systems for different applications. On the other hand, this separation strategy is still not as popular as free solution electrophoresis on chip‐based platforms due to the effects of solvent in the background electrolyte ...

Albumin messenger RNA (mRNA) expression is a marker of hepatocellular differentiation. Most published data are from review of tissue microarrays, and albumin in situ hybridization (ISH) expression across several tumor types is incompletely characterized.Sections from 221 tumors were evaluated for albumin mRNA. Immunohistochemistry was used to confirm diagnoses. Albumin ISH was performed according to manufacturer-provided instructions. Fifty-nine cases were evaluated with both commercial ISH assays. ...

Abstract This study describes the development of an analytical methodology based on the use of microchip electrophoresis (ME) devices integrated with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C 4 D) for the separation and detection of inorganic anions in post‐blast explosive residues. The best separation condition was achieved using a running buffer composed of 35 mmol/L lactic acid, 10 mmol/L histidine and 0.070 mmol/L cetyl(trimethyl ammonium) bromide. For C 4 D measurements, the ...

Abstract Aim Global change factors, such as warming, heatwaves, droughts and land‐use changes, are intensifying fire regimes (defined here as increasing frequency or severity of fires) in many ecosystems worldwide. A large body of local‐scale research has shown that such intensified fire regimes can greatly impact on ecosystem structure and function through altering plant communities. Here, we aim to find general patterns of plant responses to intensified fire regimes across climates, habitats and ...

In an attempt to provide quantitative, reproducible, and standardized analyses in cases of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), we have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) digital pathology model for the evaluation of histologic features in the EoE/esophageal eosinophilia spectrum. Here, we describe the development and technical validation of this novel AI tool.A total of 10 726 objects and 56.2 mm2 of semantic segmentation areas were annotated on whole-slide images, utilizing a cloud-based, deep ...

The precise characterization of the lobular architecture of the liver has been subject of investigation since the earliest historical publications, but an accurate model to describe the hepatic lobular microanatomy is yet to be proposed. Our aim was to evaluate whether Voronoi diagrams can be used to describe the classic liver lobular architecture. We examined the histology of normal porcine and human livers and analyzed the geometric relationships of various microanatomic structures utilizing digital ...

Blueberry consumption can prevent obesity-linked metabolic diseases, and it has been proposed that the polyphenol content of blueberries may contribute to these effects. Polyphenols have been shown to favorably impact metabolic health, but the role of specific polyphenol classes and whether the gut microbiota is linked to these effects remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate the impact of whole blueberry powder and blueberry polyphenols on the development of obesity and insulin resistance and to determine ...
