Adaptation of 24-h energy expenditure (24-h EE) to seasonal variations in food availability was studied, by using a respiration chamber, in 18 rural Gambian men on three occasions: period 1—at the end of the rainy season, which is characterized by low food availability; period 2—during the nutritionally favorable dry season; and period 3—at the onset of the following rainy season. From periods 1 to 2 body weight increased by 2.8 ± 0.4 kg, and a rise in 24-h EE was observed (from 8556 ± 212 kJ/d to 9166 ± ...

The aim of the present study was to measure the changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) induced by malaria and to assess to what extent they are related to fever and nutritional status. The REE of 19 Gambian children (mean age +/- SEM, 9 +/- 1 y; weight, 24 +/- 2 kg; expected weight for height 86 +/- 1%) were measured with a hood system at repeated intervals at the onset of malaria crisis (test A), 3 to 4 d after therapy (test B), and 14 to 21 d later (test C). Axillary temperature averaged 39.2 +/- 0.1, 36.6 +/- 0.1, and ...

The GEO 600 laser interferometer with 600 m armlength is part of a worldwide network of gravitational wave detectors. Due to the use of advanced technologies like multiple pendulum suspensions with a monolithic last stage and signal recycling, the anticipated sensitivity of GEO 600 is close to the initial sensitivity of detectors with several kilometres armlength. This paper describes the subsystems of GEO 600, the status of the detector by September 2001 and the plans towards the first science ...

Whole body protein metabolism and resting energy expenditure (REE) were measured at 11, 23, and 33 wk of pregnancy in nine pregnant (not malnourished) Gambian women and in eight matched nonpregnant nonlactating (NPNL) matched controls. Rates of whole body nitrogen flux, protein synthesis, and protein breakdown were determined in the fed state from the level of isotope enrichment of urinary urea and ammonia during a period of 9 h after a single oral dose of [15N]glycine. At regular intervals, REE was ...

Introduction Sepsis is the most prevalent cause of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Conversely, in some septic patients the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is augmented. The role of the inflammatory response and blood pressure to induce this increased GFR is unknown. Herein, relate inflammatory mediators and blood pressure to the ‘true’ GFR measured using iohexol clearance and kidney injury markers during systemic inflammation in healthy volunteers. Methods and Methods Twelve healthy subjects underwent ...

There is considerable evidence that shade is a valuable resource for cattle in summer, but less is known about the important design features of effective shade. The aim of this experiment was to investigate if lactating dairy cows have a preference for shade that offers greater protection against solar radiation. Shade was provided by wooden structures covered with shade cloth that blocked 25, 50 or 99% of solar radiation. Nine groups of Holstein–Friesian cows (27 animals in total, 3 animals/group) ...

Cattle will readily use shade in warm weather, but less is known about voluntary use of sprinklers. The objective was to understand how the amount of shade (shade cloth blocking 99% of solar radiation) influenced the behavior and physiology of Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle managed on pasture. We compared behavior, body temperature, and respiration rate of cattle provided with 1 of 3 treatments for 5 d: access to 2.4m(2) or 9.6m(2) shade/cow, or no shade (n=4 groups/treatment, 10 animals/group). Behavioral observations were carried out between 1000 and 1550h. Cows spent more than twice as much time ...

By use of a respiration chamber, 24-hour energy expenditure (EE), diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), and basal and sleeping EE were measured in 20 young rural Gambian men during the "hungry" season (weight, 60.8 +/- 1.4 kg) and in a group of 16 European men matched for body composition (weight, 66.9 +/- 1.9 kg). The 24-h EE was lower in Gambian than in European men (2047 +/- 46 vs 2635 +/- 74 kcal/d, p less than 0.001, respectively). Basal EE and sleeping EE were also lower in Gambian than in European men (1.05 +/- 0.02 vs ...

High indoor radon concentrations in a uranium-radium low-level area in the Eifel region, Germany, near the village of Döttingen are caused by ascending radon migration following the convection of groundwater and soil gas along pathways (fractures and faults) in the bedrock sediments of Lower Devonian age. Positive radon anomalies in the soil gas are found to coincide with the locations of houses showing the highest concentrations. These houses are older buildings without concrete foundation slabs. ...

Cassandra B. Tucker, A. Rogers, Karin E. Schütz,
Our aim was to understand how protection from solar radiation influenced the behaviour and physiology of Holstein Friesian dairy cattle. We compared the behaviour and body temperature of pastured dairy cattle kept in 1of 4 treatments: no shade or free access to shade that blocked either 25, 50 or 99% of solar radiation (n = 3 groups per treatment, 3 animals/group). Within each group, cows were categorized as predominantly black, black and white or white in colour (n = 1 of each coat colour per group). ...
