E.J. Milton, E. Rollin,

Accurate measurement and characterisation of fluctuations in the irradiance environment is important for many areas of optical remote sensing. This paper describes a method of estimating spectral irradiance over the region 400–1000 nm from the radiance of a calibrated reference panel, measured in four narrow spectral bands (FWHM approx. 10 nm). The reproducibility of the method was found to have an average root-mean-squared error of approximately 30 mW m− 2 nm− 1 over the region 400–1000 nm when ...

Frédéric Sansoz, Virginie Dupont,

The authors show using atomistic simulations that stress-driven grain growth can be obtained in the athermal limit during nanocrystalline aluminum indentation. They find that the grain growth results from rotation of nanograins and propagation of shear bands. Together, these mechanisms are shown to lead to the unstable migration of grain boundaries via process of coupled motion. An analytical model is used to explain this behavior based on the atomic-level shear stress acting on the interfaces during ...

The divider is fabricated by a surface micromachining process with six sequentially deposited copper layers. Athree‐port, resistor‐less divider has overall loss of 0.6 dB at 30 GHz, input port reflection coefficient better than −10 dB, and output amplitude and phase misbalances of ±0.18 dB and ±1.8°, respectively, throughout Ka‐band. The device is designed in a way that permits straightforward realization ...

Hui Wang, Andrew M. Rollins,

We demonstrate a dual-band continuum light source centered at 830 and 1300 nm for optical coherence tomography (OCT) generated by pumping a photonic crystal fiber having two closely spaced zero-dispersion wavelengths with a femtosecond laser at 1059 nm. By use of polarization control, sidelobe suppression can be improved up to approximately 7.7 dB. By employing compression of the pump pulses, the generated spectrum is smooth and near-Gaussian, resulting in a point-spread function with negligible ...

2.5-dimensional, 10-dB and 20-dB directional couplers, are designed and fabricated using air-core rectangular coaxial transmission lines. The couplers are both smaller than 1.8 by 4.2mm 2 with probing points. The measured performance of the coupler is in agreement with full-wave simulations. The components are designed such that probing or flip-chip attachment can be done with the same structures. A flip-chip transition from rectangular coax to traditional co-planar waveguide is also presented.

A 2 × 2 array of W -band air-dielectric cavity-backed patch antennas is presented. The array and its components are fabricated using a sequential surface micromachining technique known as the Polystrata process. Each antenna has a simulated 4.1% 10-dB return-loss bandwidth of about 94.5 GHz, a radiation efficiency of 95%, and a gain of 8.3 dB at broadside with a 76° 3-dB beamwidth. The simulated gain of the entire array is 13 dB. To facilitate system integration and measurement, several methods of ...

Abstract. Measuring water vapor in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere is difficult due to the low mixing ratios found there, typically only a few parts per million. Here we examine near-infrared spectra acquired with the Solar Spectral Flux Radiometer (SSFR) during the first science phase of the NASA Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX). From the 1400 and 1900 nm absorption bands we infer water vapor amounts in the tropical tropopause layer and adjacent regions between altitudes ...

The very weak far infrared collision induced absorption band of hexafluoroethane (C2F6) has been detected using a polarising interferometer and a Rollin [He(1) cooled] In/Sb crystal detector. The absorption, centred at ė 16 cm–1(296 K) and markedly asymmetric with a high frequency shoulder, is treated in terms of a multipole induced dipole that gives rise to sets of rotational ΔJ= 2 (quadrupolar) and ΔJ= 4 (hexadecapolar) lines. These were dynamically broadened using the j-diffusion model of Gordon into bands the relative intensities of which were estimated by ...
