Background Maternal inflammation is a risk factor for neonatal brain injury and future neurological deficits. Pomegranates have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant activities. Objective We hypothesized that pomegranate juice (POM) may attenuate fetal brain injury in a rat model of maternal inflammation. Study Design Pregnant rats (24 total) were randomized for intraperitoneal lipopolysaccharide (100 μg/kg) or saline at time 0 at 18 days of gestation. From day 11 ...

A growing body of evidence implies that maternal inflammation during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in the offspring. The pathophysiological mechanisms by which maternal inflammation evokes fetal brain injury and contributes to long-term adverse neurological outcomes are not completely understood. In this review, we summarize 10 years of our research experience on maternal inflammation and the implications upon the fetal/offspring brain. We review our findings ...

Abstract Progesterone has been shown to regulate immunity during pregnancy, and progesterone administration may reduce inflammation-induced preterm labor. We sought to determine the maternal brain immune response to LPS-induced inflammation in pregnant and non-pregnant mice and whether additional progesterone supplementation attenuates this response. Pregnant (P: n = 9) and non-pregnant mice (NP: n = 9) were randomized to pretreatment with vaginal progesterone/carrier (Replens), daily from days 13 to 16. ...

ABSTRACT The bones of the skeleton of most advanced teleost fish do not contain osteocytes. Considering the pivotal role assigned to osteocytes in the process of modeling and remodeling (the adaptation of external and internal bone structure and morphology to external loads and the repair of areas with micro-damage accumulation, respectively) it is unclear how, and even whether, their skeleton can undergo modeling and remodeling. Here, we report on the results of a study of controlled loading of ...

The brain sparing phenomenon in the fetus is a protective mechanism aimed at maintaining sufficient blood flow towards the brain during chronic or acute fetal stress, such as that caused by hypoxemia or utero-placental insufficiency. In this study we investigated whether the brain sparing effect can also be elicited by a physiological stress associated with maternal posture. Study design Twenty-three low-risk pregnant women participated in the study. Between 36 and 40 weeks' gestation, Doppler flow ...

Fish represent the most diverse and numerous of the vertebrate clades. In contrast to the bones of all tetrapods and evolutionarily primitive fish, many of the evolutionarily more advanced fish have bones that do not contain osteocytes. Here we use a variety of imaging techniques to show that anosteocytic fish bone is composed of a sequence of planar layers containing mainly aligned collagen fibrils, in which the prevailing principal orientation progressively spirals. When the sequence of fibril ...

Bone is a composite hierarchical structure composed of a cortical shell and inner trabecular tissue. One of the most basic questions in whole-bone function is the relative contributions of cortical and trabecular bone tissues to the loaded whole bone. In this study, the manner in which the cortical surfaces of an intact proximal rat femur deform under load is compared to the same femur after some of the trabecular bone in the distal femoral neck was removed. The surface displacements were measured ...

This study examines the question of whether the stiffness (Young's modulus) of secondary osteonal cortical bone is different in compression and tension. Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is used to measure concurrently the compressive and tensile strains in cortical bone beams tested in bending. ESPI is a non-contact method of measuring surface deformations over the entire region of interest of a specimen, tested wet. The measured strain distributions across the beam, and the determination ...

The objectives of this study were to determine 1) whether immune changes relevant to HIV progression occurred in HIV-seropositive men after the death of their intimate partner, and 2) whether depressed mood was associated with these immune changes. The bereaved group consisted of 39 gay men whose intimate partners had died of AIDS over the past year; the nonbereaved group consisted of 39 age- and HIV serostatus-matched nonbereaved men. Immunological parameters were assayed from blood samples drawn ...

Abstract Introduction Preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are at increased risk of cerebral injury and neurodevelopmental dysfunction. N‐acetyl‐cysteine (NAC) is a known anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant agent. Currently, there is no prophylactic treatment in clinical use to prevent NEC and its neurodevelopmental sequelae. We sought to determine whether brain inflammation/apoptosis accompanies NEC systemic inflammation, and whether it can be attenuated by maternal NAC treatment during ...

Background Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating gastrointestinal disease of neonates, especially premature neonates. To date, there is no prophylactic treatment against NEC, except breast milk and slow increase in enteral feeding, and there is no antenatal prophylaxis. Aims To assess possible protective effects of antenatal N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) against the intestinal pathophysiological changes associated with NEC in a rat model of NEC and against its associated mortality. Methods Newborn ...

The gap between chronological age (CA) and biological brain age, as estimated from magnetic resonance images (MRIs), reflects how individual patterns of neuroanatomic aging deviate from their typical trajectories. MRI-derived brain age (BA) estimates are often obtained using deep learning models that may perform relatively poorly on new data or that lack neuroanatomic interpretability. This study introduces a convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate BA after training on the MRIs of 4,681 cognitively ...

Perinatal hypoxia is a major cause of infant brain damage, lifelong neurological disability, and infant mortality. N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is a powerful antioxidant that acts directly as a scavenger of free radicals. We hypothesized that maternal-antenatal and offspring-postnatal NAC can protect offspring brains from hypoxic brain damage.Sixty six newborn rats were randomized into four study groups. Group 1: Control (CON) received no hypoxic intervention. Group 2: Hypoxia (HYP)-received hypoxia protocol. ...

Apicomplexan parasites exhibit a great variety of complex life cycles that require adaptation to different niches of parasitism. They invade different host cells and highjack their biological functions. Plasmodium falciparum, responsible for the deadliest form of human malaria, causes disease while completely remodeling the erythrocytes of its human host through mechanisms that are only partly understood. Recent developments in ultrastructural technologies offer new opportunities to investigate ...
