In 1983, Coates conducted a survey that ranked the side-effects perceived by patients receiving chemotherapy in the order of their severity. Vomiting and nausea were found to be the two most distressing side-effects. They have an impact on quality of life and compliance with treatment. The development of 5HT3 antagonists has been a major step forward in the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Presently, these antiemetics are routinely used as concomitant therapy ...

Abstract Introduction Fragile X syndrome ( FXS ) is a common monogenetic cause of intellectual disability, autism spectrum features, and a broad range of other psychiatric and medical problems. FXS is caused by the lack of the fragile X mental retardation protein ( FMRP ), a translational regulator of specific mRNA s at the postsynaptic compartment. The absence of FMRP leads to aberrant synaptic plasticity, which is believed to be caused by an imbalance in excitatory and inhibitory network functioning of ...

Effect-directed analysis has been applied to a river sediment sample of concern to identify the compounds responsible for the observed effects in an in vitro (anti-)androgenicity assay. For identification after non-target analysis performed on a high-resolution LTQ-Orbitrap, we developed a de novo identification strategy including physico-chemical parameters derived from the effect-directed analysis approach. With this identification strategy, we were able to handle the immense amount of data produced ...

The uncertainty and financial instability that has plagued companies and industries in the last decade is one of the root causes behind the development of Supply Chain Finance (SCF), a set of schemes aiming to optimise the management of financial flows at the supply chain level. Recent years have seen a proliferation of different SCF schemes, with different impacts on working capital costs and requirements throughout the supply chain. The practicality of SCF usage indicates that the concurrent adoption ...

With supply chain finance gaining more prominence in practice and drawing increasing attention from researchers, the question arises how this emerging discipline can build on existing theoretical conceptualisations. However, few studies have incorporated theoretical frameworks and there remains therefore a gap in literature. To fill this gap, the study reviews five theories on their suitability for supply chain finance: transaction cost economics, agency theory, network theory, collaborative networks ...

A simple, high yielding catalytic method for the multigram scale selective epoxidation of electron-rich alkenes using near-stoichiometric H2O2 under ambient conditions is reported. The system consists of a Mn(II) salt (<0.01 mol %), pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (<0.5 mol %), and substoichiometric butanedione. High TON (up to 300 000) and TOF (up to 40 s–1) can be achieved for a wide range of substrates with good to excellent selectivity, remarkable functional group tolerance, and a wide solvent scope. It is shown ...

The oxidation of alkenes, alkanes, and alcohols with H2O2 is catalyzed efficiently using an in situ prepared catalyst comprised of a MnII salt and pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (PCA) together with a ketone in a wide range of solvents. The mechanism by which these reactions proceed is elucidated, with a particular focus on the role played by each reaction component: i.e., ketone, PCA, MnII salt, solvent, etc. It is shown that the equilibrium between the ketone cocatalysts, in particular butanedione, ...

A practical method for the multigram scale selective cis-dihydroxylation of electron deficient alkenes such as diethyl fumarate and N-alkyl and N-aryl-maleimides using H2O2 is described. High turnovers (>1000) can be achieved with this efficient manganese based catalyst system, prepared in situ from a manganese salt, pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, a ketone and a base, under ambient conditions. Under optimized conditions, for diethyl fumarate at least 1000 turnovers could be achieved with only 1.5 equiv. ...

Background— The electrically remodeled canine heart after chronic AV block (CAVB) has a high susceptibility for drug-induced torsade de pointes (TdP) arrhythmias. Although focal mechanisms have been considered for initiation, there is still controversy about whether reentry is the dominant mechanism for perpetuation of TdP. In this animal model with known nonuniform prolongation of repolarization, the mechanism of perpetuation of TdP arrhythmia was explored. Methods and Results— Seventeen TdP-sensitive ...

In the Western world, the majority of morbidity and mortality are caused by multifactorial diseases. Some risk factors are related to more than one type of disease. These so-called universal risk factors are highly relevant to the population, as reduction of universal risk factors may reduce the prevalence of several types of multifactorial disease simultaneously. Vitamin D deficiency is traditionally seen as an etiological factor in bone disorders such as rickets and osteomalacia. Recent studies ...
