To study the role of the thyroid hormone (TH) in cerebellar development, we generated transgenic mice expressing a dominant-negative TH receptor (TR) in cerebellar Purkinje cells. A mutant human TRβ1 (G345R), which binds to the TH-response element but cannot bind to T3, was subcloned into exon 4 of the full-length L7/Pcp-2 gene, which is specifically expressed in Purkinje and retinal rod bipolar cells. The transgene was specifically expressed in Purkinje cells in the postnatal cerebellum. Purkinje ...

Vegetation is an important component of the terrestrial ecosystem that plays an essential role in the exchange of water and energy in climate and biogeochemical cycles. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variation of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in northern China using the GIMMS-MODIS NDVI during 1982–2018. We explored the dominant drivers of NDVI change using regression analyses. Results show that the regional average NDVI for northern China increased at a rate of 0.001 ...

A newly constructed time-of-flight electron spectrometer of the magnetic bottle type is characterized for electron detection in a broad range of kinetic energies. The instrument is designed to measure the energy spectra of electrons generated from liquids excited by strong laser fields and photons in the range of extreme ultra violet and soft X-rays. Argon inner shell electrons were recorded to calibrate the spectrometer and investigate its characteristics, such as energy resolution and collection ...

For a better understanding of possible physical links between geophysical observables and earthquake characteristics, it is important to analyze statistical spatiotemporal patterns in nature related to such events. For this purpose, characteristic changes in groundwater level (GWL) were observed before and after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan. Previous research has shown that self-organizing maps (SOM) can be used to classify complex patterns of GWL-change during different parts of the earthquake ...

Possibilities to perform pre- and post-seismic groundwater chemical comparisons on regional groundwater flow systems are rare due to lack of data and observations. The Kumamoto earthquake provides an unusual opportunity to improve the knowledge on earthquake hydrology and earthquake effects on hydrochemistry of groundwater due to a wealth of pre- and post-quake observations. We analyzed 12 physiochemical parameters (SiO2, (NO3– + NO2–)-N, Fetotal, Mntotal, pH, F−, Cl−, SO42−, Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) ...

We present a combined theoretical and experimental effort to enable strong light absorption (>70%) in atomically thin MoS2 films (≤4 layers) for either narrowband incidence with arbitrarily prespecified wavelengths or broadband incidence like solar radiation. This is achieved by integrating the films with resonant photonic structures that are deterministically designed using a unique reverse design approach based on leaky mode coupling. The design starts with identifying the properties of leaky modes ...

It is well established that unilateral exercise can produce contralateral effects. However, it is unclear whether unilateral exercise that leads to muscle injury and inflammation also affects the homologous contralateral muscles. To test the hypothesis that unilateral muscle injury causes contralateral muscle changes, an experimental rabbit model with unilateral muscle overuse caused by a combination of electrical muscle stimulation and exercise (EMS/E) was used. The soleus and gastrocnemius muscles ...

Atmospheric particulate matter and dust from agricultural land significantly affect air quality and human health in nearby residential areas. To quantify these air pollutants, it is important to estimate the vertical atmospheric particulate matter PM2.5, PM10, and dust flux using observations and validated models. Abstract Background We have previously observed, in studies on an experimental overuse model, that the tachykinin system may be involved in the processes of muscle inflammation (myositis) and other muscle tissue alterations. To further evaluate the significance of tachykinins in these processes, we have used inhibitors of neutral endopeptidase (NEP) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), substances which are known to terminate the activity of various endogenously produced substances, including tachykinins. ...
