The process of extracting information from data generated in environmental monitoring programs is often carried out using statistical tools, with Statistical Process Control (SPC) showing great potential for application in environmental monitoring. In November 2015, millions of cubic metres of tailings were dumped into the basin of the River Doce with the collapse of the Fundão dam. A study of the impact of this incident requires new approaches in data monitoring and processing, so it was sought ...

NGS-based genetic diagnosis has completely revolutionized the human genetics field. In this study, we have aimed to identify new genes and mutations by Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) responsible for inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD).A cohort of 33 pedigrees affected with a variety of retinal disorders was analysed by WES. Initial prioritization analysis included around 300 IRD-associated genes. In non-diagnosed families a search for pathogenic mutations in novel genes was undertaken.Genetic diagnosis ...

The purpose of this paper is to complement the characterisation of patient-specific carotid artery bifurcation haemodynamics based on image data obtained by Doppler ultrasound imaging. A methodology for patient-specific 3D luminal surface reconstruction followed by structured hexahedral meshing of the volume and blood flow simulation is presented. Quantitative descriptors of the flow based on wall shear stress (WSS) are used to compare healthy and stenosed carotid bifurcation haemodynamic disturbances. ...

A sequential process has been developed to produce sulfur-doped carbon nanotubes (7% w/w sulfur) on iron supported catalysts. In this procedure it is necessary to first activate the iron catalyst to initiate the growth of all-carbon CNTs from ethylene, prior to growth sulfur doped CNTs from thiophene. The resulting sulfur-doped carbon nanotubes constitute an excellent support for the anchoring of very small (1.8 nm) palladium nanoparticles. This Pd based catalyst is very active for ethanol aerobic ...

The stacking modes of graphene oxide monolayers (GO) when forming thin films is a crucial aspect determining many properties especially those related with transport. Stacking, morphology and effects of thermal and chemical reduction are studied combining in-situ synchrotron radiation diffraction and atomic force microscopy with simulations. The GO flakes mimic the substrate morphology and present an almost perfect stacking for few-layer films (2–10 layers) when in-plane flake size is large enough. ...

This paper provides a case study of a threatened seahorse species, Hippocampus reidi, highlighting the importance of using ecological information to assist conservation and management initiatives. Underwater visual sighting data (50 x 2m transect) gathered along the NE, SE and S portions of the Brazilian coast revealed an unequal distribution across localities, perhaps related to harvesting pressure, and a mean density of 0.026 ind.m-2. Our findings suggest some restricted spatial use by H. reidi, ...

Epigenetic studies suggest that diseases that develop in adulthood are related to certain conditions to which the individual is exposed during the initial stages of life. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that offspring born to mothers maintained on high-Na diets during pregnancy have higher mean arterial pressure (MAP) in adulthood. Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) UAVs are appropriate for morphometric, behavioural, abundance and demographic studies of marine mammals, providing a stable, nonintrusive and highly manoeuvrable platform. Previous studies using VTOL UAVs have been conducted on various marine mammal species, but specific studies regarding behavioural responses to these devices ...

In the PTZ animal model of epilepsy, electrical stimulation applied to the amygdaloid complex may result in either pro-convulsive or anticonvulsant effect, depending on the temporal pattern used (i.e. periodic-PS and non-periodic-NPS electrical stimulation).
