The aim of this study is to assess uveitis prevalence in a large cohort of childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) patients. A retrospective multicenter cohort study including 852 cSLE patients was performed in ten pediatric rheumatology centers (Brazilian cSLE group). An investigator meeting was held and all participants received database training. Uveitis was diagnosed through clinical assessment by the uveitis expert ophthalmologist of each center. Patients with and without uveitis ...

Citizen Science is believed to contribute significantly to the democratisation of science, engaging non-scientists in scientific research. Participatory approaches to science communication share the same interest through public participation and public engagement. In the attempt to connect these two debates both theoretically and empirically, we provide an analysis of the communication tools and strategies used by 157 Citizen Science projects across the EU, UK, and Switzerland. Our analysis reports ...

Abstract Cholesterol mediates its proliferative and metastatic effects via the metabolite 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-HC), at least in breast and endometrial cancer. We determined the serum lipoprotein profile, intratumoral cholesterol and 27-HC levels in a cohort of patients with well-differentiated papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC; low/intermediate and high risk), advanced thyroid cancers (poorly differentiated, PDTC and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, ATC) and benign thyroid tumors, as well as the expression ...

Bivalve populations display fluctuating densities resulting in different interactions among them and with their environment. Using the edible cockle ( Cerastoderma edule ) as a model, we investigated two alternative hypotheses concerning the effect of density on individual infection intensity by trematode parasites. Considering that these parasites infect cockles through filtration activity, our first hypothesis was that high host density will have a dilution effect so that infection intensity decreases ...

Bivalve stocks have been decreasing in the last decades largely due to emergent diseases and consequent mass mortality episodes. Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle) is one of the most exploited bivalves in Europe and is among the most common hosts for trematodes, the most prevalent macroparasites in coastal waters but yet poorly studied. Therefore, in the present study, this bivalve species was used as host model to determine if trematode infection exerts a negative effect on bivalve energy metabolism ...

Abstract Glutamate signaling in the mature retinal tissue is very important for accurate sensory decoding by retinal neurons and orchestrates the fine‐tuned output from the retina to higher‐order centers at the cerebral cortex. In this study, we show that glutamate induces a rapid extracellular‐regulated kinase and cAMP‐responsive element binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation in cultured developing retinal neurons. This process is reliant on α‐amino‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐methylisoxazole‐4‐propionate receptors ...

Nitric oxide (NO) is an intercellular messenger involved in many physiological and pathological processes of vertebrate and invertebrate animal tissues. In the embryonic chick retina, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and a system for l-arginine transport between neurons and glial cells were described, supporting the idea that nitric oxide is a critical molecule during retinal development. In the present work we show that nitric oxide is a modulator of cell proliferation in chick embryo retina. ...

The effect of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) placed inside the fiber ring of a cavity ring down (CRD) configuration is studied. The limitations and advantages of this configuration are discussed, and the study of the ring-down time as a function of the current applied and gain to the EDFA is also presented. In this case, the power fluctuations in the output signal are strongly dependent on the cavity ring-down time with the EDFA gain.

Prolactinomas are the most common pituitary adenomas (approximately 40% of cases), and they represent an important cause of hypogonadism and infertility in both sexes. The magnitude of prolactin (PRL) elevation can be useful in determining the etiology of hyperprolactinemia. Indeed, PRL levels > 250 ng/mL are highly suggestive of the presence of a prolactinoma. In contrast, most patients with stalk dysfunction, drug-induced hyperprolactinemia or systemic diseases present with PRL levels < 100 ng/mL. However, ...

Independent of their cholesterol-lowering effect, statins have multiple biological properties, including downregulating inflammation and upregulating endothelial NO synthase.
