Human mast cells (MCs) are directly derived from human pluripotent CD34+ stem and progenitor hematopoietic cells with stem cell factor being a critical growth factor supporting human MC proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Because of the advantages that flow cytometry offers (it allows rapid, objective, and sensitive multiparameter analysis of high numbers of cells from a sample, with information being provided on the basis of a single cell), it has become the method of choice in the past ...

Here we present a patient with the simultaneous diagnosis of mastocytosis and an acute myeloid leukemia, M2 subtype in the French-American-British classification, with t(8;21) carrying a population of immature mast cell precursors, and discuss this presentation in the context of a potential pathogenetic cellular link ...

Our aim was to systematically review and meta-analyze the effectiveness of graded activity (GA) or graded exposure (GEXP) for chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP).A literature search of multiple databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PEDro, CINAHL, and PsychINFO) was conducted to identify randomized control trials (RCTs). Standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for relevant outcome measures (pain intensity, disability, quality of life, and catastrophizing).Thirteen ...

Early diagnosis of retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular cancer, can save both a child's life and vision. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that many children across the world are diagnosed late. To our knowledge, the clinical presentation of retinoblastoma has never been assessed on a global scale. To report the retinoblastoma stage at diagnosis in patients across the world during a single year, to investigate associations between clinical variables and national income level, and to investigate ...

Psychosis is a complex entity characterized by psychological, behavioral, and motor alterations resulting in a loss of contact with reality. Although it is not common, pregnancy can be a period in which a first episode of psychosis can manifest, entailing detrimental consequences for both the fetus and the mother. Human Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) is a hematological stem cell disorder which is associated with activation of Bcr-Abl-Stat5 oncogenic pathway. Direct Bcr-Abl inhibitors are initially successful for the treatment of CML but over time many patients develop drug resistance. In the present study, the effects of CM363, a novel naphthoquinone (NPQ) derivative, were evaluated on human CML-derived K562 cells. CM363 revealed an effective cell growth inhibition (IC50 = 0.7 ± 0.5 μM) by inducing cancer cells ...

Two atomic absorption spectrometric methods are proposed for the determination of sulphonamides in pharmaceutical preparations, based on continuous precipitation with copper and silver ions in a flow injection manifold. Various filters of different chamber inner volume, pore size and filtration areas were tested. By continuous precipitation, sulphonamides ...

All organisms share similar mechanisms in the heat shock response, such as synthesis of conserved heat shock proteins. Here, we report on the cloning, characterization and functional analysis of a Trichoderma harzianum T34 hsp70 gene. The expression of this gene was evaluated in cultures grown in abiotic stress conditions. An increased level of expression was detected when the fungus was grown at 37 or 41 °C, as well as in the presence of oxidative or osmotic agents. The overexpression of hsp70 in ...

The ability of some Trichoderma strains, a biological control agent, to overcome extreme environmental conditions has previously been reported and related to heat-shock proteins (HSPs). These proteins are induced environmentally and are involved in important processes, acting as molecular chaperones in all organisms. In a previous study, we demonstrated, by overexpression, that the Trichoderma harzianum hsp70 gene conferred tolerance to heat and other abiotic stresses to this fungus. In this work, ...

The nox1 gene of Trichoderma harzianum was cloned, and its role in antagonism against phytopathogens was analyzed in nox1-overexpressed transformants. The increased levels of nox1 expression in these transformants were accompanied by an increase in ROS production during their direct confrontation with Pythium ...

Although Chile is a traditionally conservative country, considerable legal advances in sexual and reproductive rights over the past decade have brought discourses on sexuality into mainstream political, social and media agendas. In light of these changes it is important to explore how adolescents conceptualize sexuality, which in turn influences their understanding of sexual rights.
