Anthony J. McMichael, Rosalie Woodruff, Simon Hales,

There is near unanimous scientific consensus that greenhouse gas emissions generated by human activity will change Earth's climate. The recent (globally averaged) warming by 0·5°C is partly attributable to such anthropogenic emissions. Climate change will affect human health in many ways—mostly adversely. Here, we summarise the epidemiological evidence of how climate variations and trends affect various health outcomes. We assess the little evidence there is that recent global warming has already ...

Sulfide minerals commonly occur in sediments and basement rocks in southern New Zealand, as authigenic precipitates from groundwater below the oxygenated surface zone. There are two principal potential sources for sulfur in the groundwater system: weathering of sulfide minerals in the metamorphic basement and rainwater-derived marine aerosols. We present data for these two key sulfur sources: metamorphic sulfide and associated hydrothermal Au-bearing veins within the Otago Schist (average δ34S = −1. ...

Next-generation sequencing technologies can now be used to directly measure heritable de novo DNA sequence mutations in humans. However, these techniques have not been used to examine environmental factors that induce such mutations and their associated diseases. To address this issue, a working group on environmentally induced germline mutation analysis (ENIGMA) met in October 2011 to propose the necessary foundational studies, which include sequencing of parent–offspring trios from highly exposed ...

Objective: The world's climate will continue to change because of human influence. This is expected to affect health, mostly adversely. We need to compare the projected health effects in Australia arising from differing climate change scenarios to inform greenhouse gas emission (mitigation) policy. Methods: We estimated health effects in Australia (heatwave mortality, dengue transmission regions) around 2100 under various greenhouse gas scenarios: "strong policy action" (efforts made now to reduce emissions) ...

Global climate change has profound implications for human societies. The present---ecologically unsustainable--trajectory of human development fails to provide for the basic needs of a substantial fraction of the global population, while diminishing the prospects for future generations. Human-caused climate change has already begun to affect weather patterns, physical and biological phenomena, and vulnerable human communities. Because the social processes of production and consumption have their ...

Stuart Derbyshire's central proposition is correct. There are many ways in which human societies could lessen the adverse health effects of climate change. Indeed, lessening or eliminating risks to the health of communities is at the core of all of public health research and action. However, his concern that we have a “passive view of humanity” which has led us to “neglect many possibilities for offsetting the negative health effects” is misplaced.First, our Abstract states that the identification ...

Abstract Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most prevalent organisms isolated from children and adults with cancer. Strains of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) have emerged in the past decade, that often cause serious infections, in young, otherwise healthy people. Suppurative skin infections and necrotizing pneumonias are some of the diseases most characteristically associated with these new strains. Such MRSA isolates often harbor the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) gene, belong ...
