Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent behaviour among youth and young adults, yet little is known about their NSSI disclosure experiences. Disclosure of NSSI may have important implications for accessing treatment and eliciting support from family and friends; it may also highlight where efforts are needed to combat potential barriers (e.g. shame). This study sought to better understand the factors that facilitate and discourage NSSI disclosure in a sample of undergraduate students as well ...

Recent research points to the salience of the Internet as a means to seek information about non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) but no research has explored what is asked about NSSI online. The current study examined the nature of NSSI questions asked on Yahoo! Answers. One hundred and eight questions were analyzed using a content analysis. The most frequently asked questions pertained to seeking validation for NSSI experiences (30.56%); however, the responses provided were sometimes quite invalidating. ...

One hundred sixty-nine healthy women, aged 17 to 29 years, nonsmokers or light smokers (fewer than ten cigarettes per day), were assigned randomly to take one of five oral contraceptives: 1) 100 micrograms mestranol plus 0.5 mg ethynodiol diacetate (100 M + 0.5 ED); 2) 100 micrograms mestranol plus 1.0 mg ethynodiol diacetate (100 M + 1.0 ED); 3) 50 micrograms ethinyl estradiol plus 1.0 mg ethynodiol diacetate (50 EE + 1.0 ED); 4) 30 micrograms ethinyl estradiol plus 2.0 mg ethynodiol diacetate (30 EE + 2.0 ...

Human bipedal behavior merits physiological study, to identify both basic control mechanisms and factors causing deterioration of control. The prerequisite of measurement of the force exerted, in this instance within each pedal cycle, has been obtained through a computerized system. Strain gauge transducer on force pedals were linked through a mini-computer A/D interface and timer to measure force per 7 degrees pedal rotation and to accumulate data from successive cycles. Means, standard deviations ...

Using a computerized system for measurement of the variability of force exerted at 26 points in each pedal revolution during the repetitive habituated task of cycling, healthy adult males 6 times performed for 20 minutes, either (a) 3 hours after a meal (fasting) or when so fasted and then fed glucose (b) immediately before, or (c) 30 minutes before performance. Both light and moderate workloads were used. As expected, blood glucose concentrations fell modestly below basal with exercise under (a) or ( ...

The forces applied to pedals during cycling were collected every 40 ms from approximately 29,000 movement repetitions. Intra-cycle mean values of force and its variability were significantly correlated, supporting Schmidt's impulse variability theory of within-movement activities of the legs. In addition, as mean forces approached peak values, coefficients of variation decreased. From averages taken minute by minute, intra-cycle forces were seen to rise or fall in concert, implying that the pattern ...
