Human DNA repair gene XRCC1 complements the strand-break rejoining defect in Chinese hamster mutant EM9 and encodes a protein that is apparently required for optimal activity of DNA ligase III. Toward the goal of producing transgenic mice that carry a mutation in the Xrcc-1 locus, the murine homolog of XRCC1 was cloned from both cosmid genomic and cDNA libraries. Upon transfection into EM9 cells, cosmids containing the functional mouse gene efficiently corrected (94-100%) the high sister-chromatid- ...

The US catfish industry has shown increasing trends toward intensification of production as a means of achieving cost efficiencies on farms. Previous studies depicted the potential for cost efficiencies in alternative technologies such as split‐pond systems, intensively aerated ponds, and in‐pond raceway systems. This study provides an economic comparison of these systems under a uniform set of economic assumptions using a standard enterprise budget analysis. Cost of production of hybrid catfish ...

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to determine the distribution and genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolates from pigs in England. Methods Clinical isolates collected between 1998 and 2011 were tested for resistance to trimethoprim and sulphonamide. The genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance was determined by shotgun WGS analysis and the subsequent isolation and sequencing of plasmids. Results A total of 16 (out of 106) A. pleuropneumoniae ...

Mammals are metagenomic in that they are composed of not only their own gene complements but also those of all of their associated microbes. To understand the coevolution of the mammals and their indigenous microbial communities, we conducted a network-based analysis of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences from the fecal microbiota of humans and 59 other mammalian species living in two zoos and in the wild. The results indicate that host diet and phylogeny both influence bacterial diversity, ...

Vibrational frequencies of three niobium normal modes of triniobium dicarbide neutral and cation have been determined from pulsed field ionization-zero electron kinetic energy photoelectron spectra. The niobium stretching mode has a frequency of 326 cm−1 in the neutral and 339 cm−1 in the ion. The two deformation modes have frequencies of 238 and 82 cm−1 in the neutral and a degenerate frequency of 258 cm−1 in the ion. The geometry of the triniobium dicarbide has been established by comparing the ...

James Webb Space Telescope observations have spectroscopically confirmed the existence of galaxies as early as 300 Myr after the Big Bang and with a higher number density than what was expected based on galaxy formation models and Hubble Space Telescope observations. Yet, most sources confirmed spectroscopically so far in the first 500 Myr have rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosities below the characteristic luminosity ( $${M}_\mathrm{UV}^{* }$$ ), limiting the signal-to-noise ratio for investigating substructure. ...
