WHILE U.S. SOCIETY PORTRAYS ITSELF AS ROOTED IN A HISTORY OF EQUAL opportunity, institutionalized forms of discrimination limit the life chances of minority populations in the United States. social struggles of the 1960s resulted in the formalization and expansion of social policy interventions intended to promote equal opportunity for socially oppressed groups (Aguirre and Martinez, 1993; Woodhouse, 2002). One of these social policy interventions became known as affirmative action. This public policy ...

Executive Summary Diversity has deep roots in American society and a tenacious hold on its social fabric. Institutions of higher education have not been very responsive to the issues raised by rapidly growing diverse communities in the United States. The institutions' response to diversity is not unexpected given that higher education is relatively conservative about changing its institutional practices. In order to understand how higher education may respond to diversity issues we discuss two frameworks ...

Group A rotavirus (RVA) and bovine coronavirus (BCoV) are the two main viral enteropathogens associated with neonatal calf diarrhea. The aim of the present survey was to investigate the epidemiology and the role of RVA and BCoV in the presentation of dairy and beef calf diarrhea in Lerma Valley of Salta province, within the Northwest region of Argentina. Stool samples of calves with or without diarrhea younger than 2 months of age were collected from 19 dairy farms and 20 beef farms between the years ...

SLEEP and body temperature characteristics were studied in man in baseline (B), 24 h-constant routine (CR) and recovery (R) after the CR. The sleep advanced and deepened the trough of the minimum temperature when compared with CR. No relevant difference in minimum body temperature, or in the slope of temperature decrease was found, however, between B and R sleeping nights. No correlation was found between the amount of slow wave sleep and body cooling. The results do not support a homeostatic role ...

Thermophilic conditions were used to define the composting process. Vetch, alfalfa and ammonium nitrate were used as nitrogen co-substrates, in 6 treatments: sunflower hulls alone (C), sunflower hulls plus ammonium nitrate (CN), sunflower hulls plus alfalfa (CA), sunflower hulls plus alfalfa and ammonium nitrate (CAV), sunflower hulls plus vetch (CV), sunflower hulls ...

Abstract To date, there is no representative in vitro model for liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), as primary LSECs dedifferentiate very fast in culture and no combination of cytokines or growth factors can induce an LSEC fate in (pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-derived) endothelial cells (ECs). Furthermore, the transcriptional programmes driving an LSEC fate have not yet been described. Here, we first present a computational workflow ( CenTFinder ) that can identify transcription factors (TFs) that ...

Abstract Anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 is frequently activated in human malignant cells to promote cell survival and inhibit cell death. Replication-selective oncolytic adenoviruses deleted in the functional Bcl-2 homologue E1B19K potently synergise with apoptosis-inducing chemotherapeutic drugs, including mitoxantrone for prostate cancer. Here, we demonstrate that our previously generated oncolytic mutant Ad∆∆ (E1B19K- and E1ACR2-deleted) caused potent synergistic apoptotic cell death in both drug-sensitive ...

The heptanuclear entity consists of a central [Cu(OH)6]4– core connected to six additional copper(II) metal centers in a radial and planar arrangement through the hydroxides. It generates a wheel-shaped entity in which water molecules and μ–κN3:κN9 adeninato ligands ...

The present work provides the basis to obtain three-dimensional (3D) extended porous supramolecular assemblies named supramolecular metal–organic frameworks (SMOFs). This goal can be achieved by considering three key factors: (i) the use of rigid building units, (ii) the establishment of predictable and rigid synthons between the building units, and (iii) the non-coplanarity of functional groups involved in the predictable synthons. Throughout this report we demonstrate the suitability of this synthetic ...

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are catecholamine‐producing chromaffin cell tumors with diverse phenotypic features reflecting mutations in numerous genes, including MYC‐associated factor X ( MAX ). To explore whether phenotypic differences among PPGLs reflect a MAX‐mediated mechanism and opposing influences of hypoxia‐inducible factor (HIF)s HIF2α and HIF1α, we combined observational investigations in PPGLs and gene‐manipulation studies in two pheochromocytoma cell lines. Among PPGLs from ...

Saccharification of BAT was carried out at 147°C with 2% sulfuric acid for 15 min, yielding 25.8 g/l of fermentable sugars, corresponding to 36.1% of saccharificable material ( ...

The cupin superfamily of proteins is among the most functionally diverse of any described to date. It was named on the basis of the conserved β-barrel fold ('cupa' is the Latin term for a small barrel), and comprises both enzymatic and non-enzymatic members, which have either one or two cupin domains. Within the conserved tertiary structure, the variety of biochemical function is provided by minor variation of the residues in the active site and the identity of the bound metal ion. This review discusses ...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 mutants affected in acyclic monoterpenes, n-octanol, and acetate assimilation were isolated using transposon mutagenesis. The isocitrate lyase gene (aceA) corresponding to ORF PA2634 of the PAO1 strain genome was identified in one of these mutants. The aceA gene encodes a protein that is 72% identical to the isocitrate lyase (ICL) characterized from Colwellia maris, but is less than 30% identical to their homologues from pseudomonads. The genetic arrangement of aceA suggests ...

Criminology arrived in Peru by the late 1880s, and with it the promise of both scientific explanations of crime and effective policies of crime control. As in Europe, Peruvian criminologists also debated the relative importance of biological and social factors in explaining crime tendencies. This article reviews the adoption and early developments of positivist criminology in Peru. It shows that the most radical versions of biological determinism were rejected by Peruvian criminologists in favor ...

This study was aimed at comparing the effect of unilateral hippocampal inactivation with tetrodotoxin (TTX) and lidocaine on spatial memory consolidation. Both drugs block voltage-dependent sodium channels. However, TTX and lidocaine differ in the duration of their effects, with maximum TTX effect between 30 min and 120 min, washing out in 24 hours. Lidocaine maximum effect occurs 20-30 minutes after administration. Our experimental subjects, twenty-four 3-month-old Wistar rats, were unilaterally ...
