In recent years, the fight against climate change and the mitigation of the impact of fluorinated gases (F-gases) on the atmosphere is a global concern. Development of technologies that help to efficiently separate and recycle hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at the end of the refrigeration and air conditioning equipment life is a priority. The technological development is important to stimulate the F-gas capture, specifically difluoromethane (R-32) and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a), due to their high ...

The environmental impact of fluorinated gases (F-gases) necessitates the development of green technologies to mitigate them. Fluorinated ionic liquids (FIL/ILs) emerged as an alternative absorbent due to their unique and exceptional properties. In this work, a COSMO-based/Aspen Plus methodology was used to evaluate the performance of FIL/ILs as absorbents in the process scale of two F-gases: 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) and difluoromethane (R-32). Results of the absorption column in equilibrium ...

Due to the ability of millimeter waves (mmWs) to penetrate dielectric materials, such as plastic, polymer, and clothes, the mmW imaging technology has been widely used for the detection of concealed weapons and objects. The use of mmW images has also recently been proposed for biometric person recognition to overcome certain limitations in image acquisition at visible frequencies. This paper proposes a biometric person recognition system based on the shape information extracted from real mmW images. ...

Meat is a nutrient-rich matrix for human consumption. However, it is also a suitable environment for the proliferation of both spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. The growing demand to develop healthy and nutritious meat products with low fat, low salt and reduced additives and achieving sanitary qualities has led to the replacement of the use of synthetic preservatives with natural-origin compounds. However, the reformulation process that reduces the content of several important ingredients ( ...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 mutants affected in acyclic monoterpenes, n-octanol, and acetate assimilation were isolated using transposon mutagenesis. The isocitrate lyase gene (aceA) corresponding to ORF PA2634 of the PAO1 strain genome was identified in one of these mutants. The aceA gene encodes a protein that is 72% identical to the isocitrate lyase (ICL) characterized from Colwellia maris, but is less than 30% identical to their homologues from pseudomonads. The genetic arrangement of aceA suggests ...

The cupin superfamily of proteins is among the most functionally diverse of any described to date. It was named on the basis of the conserved β-barrel fold ('cupa' is the Latin term for a small barrel), and comprises both enzymatic and non-enzymatic members, which have either one or two cupin domains. Within the conserved tertiary structure, the variety of biochemical function is provided by minor variation of the residues in the active site and the identity of the bound metal ion. This review discusses ...

Criminology arrived in Peru by the late 1880s, and with it the promise of both scientific explanations of crime and effective policies of crime control. As in Europe, Peruvian criminologists also debated the relative importance of biological and social factors in explaining crime tendencies. This article reviews the adoption and early developments of positivist criminology in Peru. It shows that the most radical versions of biological determinism were rejected by Peruvian criminologists in favor ...

The role of soft biometrics to enhance person recognition systems in unconstrained scenarios has not been extensively studied. Here, we explore the utility of the following modalities: gender, ethnicity, age, glasses, beard, and moustache. We consider two assumptions: 1) manual estimation of soft biometrics and 2) automatic estimation from two commercial off-the-shelf systems (COTS). All experiments are reported using the labeled faces in the wild (LFW) database. First, we study the discrimination ...

Strongyloides stercoralis infections have a worldwide distribution with a global burden in terms of prevalence and morbidity that is largely ignored. A public health response against soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections should broaden the strategy to include S. stercoralis and overcome the epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic challenges that this parasite poses in comparison to Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms. The relatively poor sensitivity of single stool ...

Abstract Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), which can be intralobar or extralobar, is a rare developmental anomaly of the lung characterized by nonfunctional pulmonary tissue without communication with the tracheobronchial tree and with an aberrant systemic arterial blood supply. The intralobar type is typically within the pleural cavity with an arterial feeding vessel generally arising from the thoracic aorta and with venous drainage into the left atrium. The prognosis is poor in cases diagnosed ...

Ab initio calculations are used to analyze the effect of C–H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions on the C–H bond length. Methane derivatives, CH4−nXn (where n=1,2,3 for X=F and n=1 for X=NO2) are taken as proton donors and H2O as acceptor. The topological properties of electronic charge density are analyzed employing the Bader's Atoms In Molecules (AIM) theory. A good correlation between the structural parameters and the properties of charge density is found. Then, using the Natural Bond Orbitals (NBO) ...

A topological analysis of two model systems in which different CH…O hydrogen bonds exist is performed in order to characterize them. It is found that it is necessary to analyze the topological properties of the acceptor atom involved in the hydrogen bond since several parameters are qualitatively different in both complexes. This behaviour seems to suggest a way of identifying these bonds.

ABSTRACT Currently, several solar dehydrator designs exist on the market, and some of these designs require expensive materials, which makes the prototype expensive and difficult to obtain for small producers. The aim of this study was to build a low-cost solar dryer with high energy efficiency based on a previous solar dryer model. The optimization of the previous solar dryer model was characterized via temperature profiles and drying kinetics to identify gaps. Theoretical and numerical modeling ...
