Sediments in combined sewers may negatively affect the performance of sewer systems and significantly promote the formation of hydrogen sulfide. To prevent this, German sewer systems are cleaned regularly but at high costs. In order to optimize the cleaning intervals, this study investigates how deposits build up and change over a defined period under constant conditions. The experiments were performed using real wastewater at a pilot plant consisting of three 10 m long acrylic glass pipes with ...

The application of powdered activated carbon (PAC) for the removal of organic micropollutants (OMP) at two different points of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was investigated. In one activated sludge tank (AST) PAC was dosed into the nitrification zone. Compared to that a post treatment stage was operated where PAC was dosed after the secondary clarifier of the AS process. Experiments included different PAC dosages between 5 and 20 mg/L and the removal rates for thirteen wastewater relevant ...

Abstract While the Web was designed as a decentralised environment, individual authors still lack the ability to conveniently author and publish documents, and to engage in social interactions with documents of others in a truly decentralised fashion. We present dokieli , a fully decentralised, browser-based authoring and annotation platform with built-in support for social interactions, through which people retain ownership of and sovereignty over their data. The resulting “living” documents are interoperable ...

Abstract Feasibility of automated volume-derived cardiac functional evaluation has successfully been demonstrated using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Notwithstanding, strain assessment has proven incremental value for cardiovascular risk stratification. Since introduction of deformation imaging to clinical practice has been complicated by time-consuming post-processing, we sought to investigate automation respectively. CMR data (n = 1095 patients) from two prospectively recruited ...

A major cryptanalytic computation is currently underway on multiple platforms, including standard CPUs, FPGAs, PlayStations and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), to break the Certicom ECC2K-130 challenge. This challenge is to compute an elliptic-curve discrete logarithm on a Koblitz curve over \(\mathbb{F}_{2^{131}}\). Optimizations have reduced the cost of the computation to approximately 277 bit operations in 261 iterations.GPUs are not designed for fast binary-field arithmetic; they are designed ...

The act of feeding in mammals can generate such powerful cues for peripheral organs that, under certain conditions, they can override the entraining signals coming from the clock in the brain. Restricting the feeding time to the inactivity period, for example, can completely and quickly reverse the rhythms of gene expression in the liver. This manipulation does not affect the central oscillator in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which is phase-locked to the light-dark cycle, but does release the peripheral ...

This paper analyzes the cost of breaking ECC under the following assumptions: (1) ECC is using a standardized elliptic curve that was actually chosen by an attacker; (2) the attacker is aware of a vulnerability in some curves that are not publicly known to be vulnerable. This cost includes the cost of exploiting the vulnerability, but also the initial cost of computing a curve suitable for sabotaging the standard. This initial cost depends heavily upon the acceptability criteria used by the public ...

This paper introduces a high-security post-quantum stateless hash-based signature scheme that signs hundreds of messages per second on a modern 4-core 3.5GHz Intel CPU. Signatures are 41 KB, public keys are 1 KB, and private keys are 1 KB. The signature scheme is designed to provide long-term $$2^{128}$$ security even against attackers equipped with quantum computers. Unlike most hash-based designs, this signature scheme is stateless, allowing it to be a drop-in replacement for current signature schemes.

Dual EC is an algorithm to compute pseudorandom numbers starting from some random input. Dual EC was standardized by NIST, ANSI, and ISO among other algorithms to generate pseudorandom numbers. For a long time this algorithm was considered suspicious – the entity designing the algorithm could have easily chosen the parameters in such a way that it can predict all outputs – and on top of that it is much slower than the alternatives and the numbers it provides are more biased, i.e., not random. The Snowden ...

The cerebral cortex displays substantial variation in cellular architecture, a regional patterning that has been of great interest to anatomists for centuries. In 1925, Constantin von Economo and George Koskinas published a detailed atlas of the human cerebral cortex, describing a cytoarchitectonic division of the cortical mantle into over 40 distinct areas. Von Economo and Koskinas accompanied their seminal work with large photomicrographic plates of their histological slides, together with tables ...

Plasma creatine kinase (CK) release is a marker of damage in fish; their expression can indicate drug/contaminant exposure. Three CK isoforms have been described in fish: muscle CK (M-CK), brain CK (B-CK) and mitochondrial sarcomeric, and the release of any of them could be detected in the serum. Nevertheless, the expression and properties of M-CK in Atlantic salmon are still unknown. In this study, we evaluated differential M-CK expression in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L) skeletal muscle and serum ...

This paper applies generalized birthday attacks to the FSB compression function, and shows how to adapt the attacks so that they run in far less memory. In particular, this paper presents details of a parallel implementation attacking FSB48, a scaled-down version of FSB proposed by the FSB submitters. The implementation runs on a cluster of 8 PCs, each with only 8GB of RAM and 700GB of disk. This situation is very interesting for estimating the security of systems against distributed attacks using ...

A 25-gigabyte “point obfuscation” challenge “using security parameter 60” was announced at the Crypto 2014 rump session; “point obfuscation” is another name for password hashing. This paper shows that the particular matrix-multiplication hash function used in the challenge is much less secure than previous password-hashing functions are believed to be. This paper’s attack algorithm broke the challenge in just 19 minutes using a cluster of 21 PCs.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most widespread scaling minerals and has been a long-standing problem within many industrial sectors. Scaling of calcium carbonate on conductive surfaces can be prevented electrochemically by anodic polarization. Anodic polarization, however, cannot be applied directly to metal surfaces like e.g., steel that will suffer from corrosion when polarized anodically in an aqueous environment. Thus, in this paper it is proposed to apply a conductive coating to a metal ...
