The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) has been extensively evaluated in groups of patients with osteoarthritis, yet not in patients with a femoral neck fracture. This study aimed to determine the reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness of the WOMAC compared with the Short Form-12 (SF-12) and the EuroQol 5D (EQ-5D) questionnaires for the assessment of elderly patients with a femoral neck fracture.Reliability was tested by assessing the Cronbach alpha. ...

SUMMARY Genes for seven putative serine proteases (ChpA–ChpG) belonging to the trypsin subfamily and homologous to the virulence factor pat‐1 were identified on the chromosome of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis ( Cmm ) NCPPB382. All proteases have signal peptides indicating export of these proteins. Their putative function is suggested by two motifs and an aspartate residue typical for serine proteases. Furthermore, six cysteine residues are located at conserved positions. The genes are ...

This is an overview of the current literature on malunion after midshaft clavicle fracture. Anatomy, trauma mechanism, classification, incidence, symptoms, prevention, and treatment options are all discussed. The conclusion is that clavicle malunion is a distinct clinical entity that can be treated successfully.

A life-size mechanical middle ear model and human temporal bones were used to evaluate three different middle ear transducers for implantable hearing aids: the driving rod transducer (DRT), the floating mass transducer (FMT) or vibrant sound bridge, and the contactless transducer (CLT). Results of the experiments with the mechanical model were within the range of the results for human temporal bones. However, results with the mechanical model showed better reproducibility. The handling of the mechanical ...

Malunion after mid shaft clavicle fractures has recently been recognized as a cause of pain and dysfunction of the shoulder. The mechanism that causes these complaints is however yet unclear. In this study we describe the kinematic changes that occur in the shoulder girdle due to clavicle shortening. An experimental cadaveric study was performed on five shoulders of three fresh frozen specimens. The specimens were fixed in an upright position that allowed free motion of the shoulder girdle. We measured ...

Program optimizations that have been exclusively done by either the architecture or the compiler are now being done by both. This blurred distinction offers opportunities to optimize performance and redefine the compiler-architecture interface. We describe an optimization continuum with compile time and post run time as end points and show how different classes of optimizations fall within it. Most current commercial compilers are still at the compile-time end point, and only a few research efforts ...

The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of balance training in a balance trainer, a newly developed mechanical device for training balance, with conventional balance training in subacute stroke patients. This was a randomized controlled study. Fifty participants met the inclusion criteria and 39 finished the study. The participants were randomly divided into control and balance trainer groups. The first had conventional balance training while the second trained balance in the balance trainer. ...

Karyomegalic interstitial nephritis was first described in 1979 by Mihatsch, who was reporting three such cases. We report here four additional cases as well as two family investigations. Our findings support the association of karyomegaly and interstitial nephritis as a distinct entity. Typical clinical features are asymptomatic progressive renal failure in the third decade of life and recurrent infections, mostly of the upper respiratory tract. Histologic alterations consist of markedly enlarged ...

In the last decade, guideline organizations faced a number of problems, including a lack of standardization in guideline development methods and suboptimal guideline implementation. To contribute to the solution of these problems, we produced a toolbox for guideline development, implementation, revision, and evaluation. All relevant guideline organizations in the Netherlands were approached to prioritize the topics. We sent out a questionnaire and discussed the results at an invitational conference. ...

During the last 15 years, molecular genetics has generated a vast body of information on the mechanisms of the interactions between phytopathogenic bacteria and their host plants. In our last review on this subject (Ahlemeyer and Eichenlaub 2001), we focused on the Gram-negative bacteria where the understanding of the plant-microbe interaction has reached a relatively advanced stage. This is of course mainly due to the fact that Gram-negative bacteria have attracted the attention of numerous research ...

The composition of lipoproteins in the plasma of patients with LCAT deficiency (LCAT-D) is grossly altered due to the lack of cholesteryl esters which form the core of normal lipoproteins. When plasma from LCAT-D patients and their relatives was examined we found that nine heterozygotes had plasma Lp(a) levels of 2-13 mg/dl whereas none of 11 affected homozygous individuals from different families contained detectable amounts of Lp(a) in their plasma. Therefore, the binding of apo(a) to LDL density ...

Maize harvested in the Centane region of the former Transkei, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, by subsistence farmers has been shown over many seasons to be contaminated with fumonisin mycotoxins. However, there are limited data on the presence of other mycotoxins. Two multimycotoxin LC-MS/MS methods were applied to good and moldy maize samples, as separated by the farmers themselves from the 2011 harvest. One method involved extract cleanup on multitoxin immunoaffinity columns before LC-MS/ ...

Low-value care provides minimal or no benefit for the patient, wastes resources, and can cause harm. Explicit do-not-do recommendations in clinical guidelines are a first step in reducing low-value care. The aim of this study was to identify and prioritize do-not-do recommendations in general practice guidelines with priority for implementation. We used a mixed method design in Dutch primary care. First, we identified do-not-do recommendations through a systematic assessment of 92 Dutch guidelines ...

The spatial distribution of trace elements in human lymph nodes partially infiltrated by melanoma cells was determined by elemental bio-imaging. Imaging of (31)P within the nodal capsule and normal lymph node tissue showed a clear demarcation of the tumour boundary, with a significant decrease in relative (31)P concentration within the tumour. The location of the tumour boundary was confirmed by haematoxylin and eosin staining of serial sections and observation by light microscopy. Further enhancement ...

The synthesis and characterisation of a new donor–chromophore–acceptor system based on poly(vinyltriphenylamine) as the electron donor and a glycine-functionalised bis(2,2′;6′,2′′-terpyridine)ruthenium(II) complex acting both as a chromophore and as an anchor group attached to ZnO nanorods as the electron acceptor are described. The TPA-containing block copolymer was synthesised by Reversible Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerisation and the ruthenium complex glycine conjugates ...

Lymphopoiesis requires the activation of lineage-specific genes embedded in naive, inaccessible chromatin or in primed, accessible chromatin. The mechanisms responsible for de novo gain of chromatin accessibility, known as “pioneer” function, remain poorly defined. Here, we showed that the EBF1 C-terminal domain (CTD) is required for the regulation of a specific gene set involved in B cell fate decision and differentiation, independently of activation and repression functions. Using genome-wide analysis ...

In this study, the effects of TNF binding protein I (TBP I) on TNF-induced changes of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (MVEC) were investigated. TBP I completely abolished TNF-induced IL-6 production and E-selectin induction, while it partially inhibited TNF-induced IL-8 production and up-regulation of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Moreover, TBP I significantly inhibited TNF-induced cytotoxicity and leukocyte adherence on human brain MVEC. The inhibitory activity of TBP I for TNF was dose-dependent ...
