Outer product analysis is a method that permits the combination of two spectral domains with the aim of emphasizing co-evolutions of spectral regions. This data fusion technique consists in the product of all combinations of the variables that define each spectral domain. The main issue concerning the application of this technique is the very wide data matrix obtained which can be very hard to handle with multivariate techniques such as PCA or PLS, due to computer resources constraints. The present ...

Abstract In Europe, the mean incidence of urinary tract infections in intensive care units is 1.1 per 1000 patient‐days. Of these cases, catheter‐associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) account for 98%. In total, CAUTI in hospitals is estimated to give additional health‐care costs of £1–2.5 billion in the United Kingdom alone. This is in sharp contrast to the low cost of urinary catheters and emphasizes the need for innovative products that reduce the incidence rate of CAUTI. Ureteral stents and ...

Maintenance of equilibrium between free radical production and antioxidant defences (enzymatic and non enzymatic) is an essential condition for normal organism functioning. When this equilibrium has a tendency for the production of free radicals we say that the organism is in oxidative stress. In this situation, excess free radicals may damage cellular lipids, proteins and DNA, affecting normal function and leading to various diseases. In aerobic organisms, the free radicals are constantly produced ...

Diacetyl can be determined by adsorptive stripping voltammetry after derivatization with o-phenylenediamine. The method may be applicable to the determination of diacetyl in different foods, being a good alternative to other analytical methods. In this work an on-line automated analytical system for diacetyl determination in beer is described. A hanging mercury drop electrode voltammetric flow detector was used, and the analyte was determined without the traditional deoxygenation procedure. The ...

We observe distinct interlayer shear mode Raman spectra for trilayer graphene with ABA and ABC stacking order. There are two rigid-plane shear-mode phonon branches in trilayer graphene. We find that ABA trilayers exhibit pronounced Raman response from the high-frequency shear branch, without any noticeable response from the low-frequency branch. In contrast, ABC trilayers exhibit no response from the high-frequency shear branch, but significant Raman response from the low-frequency branch. Such ...

The treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) with levodopa is very effective. However, over time, motor complications (MCs) appear, restricting the patient from leading a normal life. One of the most disabling MCs is ON-OFF fluctuations. Gathering accurate information about the clinical status of the patient is essential for planning treatment and assessing its effect. Systems such as the REMPARK system, capable of accurately and reliably monitoring ON-OFF fluctuations, are of great interest. To analyze ...

The complex interaction of ecological and social systems has shaped the cities through the time. This fosters the need to develop interdisciplinary approaches to urban issues by combining natural and social sciences. Cities, as the predominant mode of social organization, are vulnerable to social and environmental challenges which urban green spaces (UGS) can contribute to solve by the ecosystem services (ES) that can provide. The objective was to assess the quality of UGS framed by the ES classification ...

Significance Sepsis remains a leading cause of death. New insights into its pathophysiology are likely to be key to the development of effective therapeutic strategies against sepsis. Given the role of GDF15 in metabolism regulation and in cachexia during late stages of cancer, features that also occur in sepsis, elucidation of the possible mechanistic role of GDF15 in sepsis is of great importance. We find that septic patients have very high levels of GDF15 in the peripheral blood, which correlate ...

Public Urban Green Spaces (PUGS) are the main drivers for increasing the quality of urban environments, potentiating local resilience, promoting sustainable lifestyles, as well as improving both the health and well-being of their users. Municipal leaders are responsible for the maintenance of PUGS. However, current evidence identifies limited knowledge about urban green infrastructure governance since the lack of data about PUGS is the main obstacle to effective intervention. Set against this background, ...

The Yamnaya expansions from the western steppe into Europe and Asia during the Early Bronze Age (~3000 BCE) are believed to have brought with them Indo-European languages and possibly horse husbandry. We analyzed 74 ancient whole-genome sequences from across Inner Asia and Anatolia and show that the Botai people associated with the earliest horse husbandry derived from a hunter-gatherer population deeply diverged from the Yamnaya. Our results also suggest distinct migrations bringing West Eurasian ...

Schistosomal nephropathy has long been related to the hepatosplenic form of schistosomiasis. In the last few years, 24 patients with hepatointestinal schistosomiasis and the nephrotic syndrome were studied. Aiming at evaluating a possible etiologic participation of schistosomiasis in the development of the nephropathy, this group was comparatively studied with a group of 37 patients with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Both groups had a different distribution of the histologic lesions. In the group ...

ABSTRACT: Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (in the presence of urea) and gel permeation chromatography were employed to assess the profile of hydrolysis of caseins and the activity of enzymes contributed by the flowers of the plant Cynara cardunculus on bovine caseins, after previous precipitation with ammonium sulfate or in a plain crude aqueous extract. Results indicated that the qualitative degradation profile of bovine caseins by plant enzymes (cardosins) remains essentially unchanged upon extraction, ...

The purpose of this research work was to study the proteolytic activity of aqueous crude extracts of flowers of the plant Cynara cardunculus on the major whey proteins, namely, β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) and α-lactalbumin (α-La). These extracts, containing a mixture of cardosins A and B (i.e., two distinct aspartic proteases), have been employed for many years in traditional cheese-making in Portugal and Spain. Cow's milk sweet whey was incubated for up to 24 h at various ratios of addition of crude enzyme ...

In the present research effort, production of derivatives of cardosin A (a plant protease) encompassing full stabilization of its dimeric structure has been achieved, via covalent, multi-subunit immobilization onto highly activated agarose-glutaraldehyde supports. Boiling such enzyme derivatives in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate and β-mercaptoethanol did not lead to leaching of enzyme, thus providing evidence for the effectiveness of the attachment procedure. Furthermore, the cardosin A derivatives ...
