Abstract This review focuses on the current status of antibiotics use, effects on animal health and the environment, existing policies and regulatory mechanisms in the top 15 producing countries. Fifty papers were reviewed and represented the bulk of literature worldwide. We observed that 67 antibiotic compounds were used in 11 of the 15 countries between 2008 and 2018. Among these countries, 73% applied oxytetracycline, sulphadiazine and florfenicol. On average, countries used 15 antibiotics and ...

This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary palm oil levels on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition and serum metabolites of Oreochromis niloticus. Five isonitrogenous diets, 32% crude protein with increasing palm oil levels of 0 (Control, CTRL), 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% were used as the major lipid source for the trial. The results showed that greatest weight gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio occurred at 6% dietary palm oil level. Dietary palm oil levels ...

Five isolipidic experimental diets (32% crude protein) were formulated to contain 3% fish oil (FO) and virgin coconut oil (3VCO) as sole lipids or blends of FO + VCO in ratios of 75:25% (0.75VCO), 50:50% (1.5VCO) and 25:75% (2.25VCO). Triplicate groups of O. niloticus were fed one of five diets to apparent satiation, twice daily for 8 weeks. It was observed that fish fed diet 3VCO exhibited the best performance with respect to feed intake (492.1 g), final weight (214.60 g) and weight gain (154.90 g). Significant ...

Summary Survival depends on appropriate behavioural and physiological responses to danger. In addition to active ‘fight‐flight’ defence responses, a passive ‘freeze‐hide’ response is adaptive in some contexts. However, the physiological mechanisms determining which individuals choose a given defence response remain poorly understood. We examined the relationships among personality, metabolic performance and physiological stress responses across an environmental gradient in the olive flounder, Paralichthys ...

Collagen, collagen–chitosan (C1), collagen–calcium acetate (C2) and collagen–chitosan–calcium acetate (C3) films were prepared from shark catfish (Pangasius pangasius) skin, and were investigated for their mechanical and functional properties. Collagen was characterized as type I and contained three identical chains. C3 film had higher tensile strength (10.4 MPa) and Young's modulus (570 MPa). Composite films had low swelling rates and solubility and lasted for 6 days before complete biodegradation. Fourier ...

Two groups of Anguilla japonica were treated with hormone, one on a weekly basis, the other on a biweekly basis. Intramuscular injection was applied at a dose of 0.75 mg/kg BW carp pituitary extract (CPE) plus 150 IU/kg BW human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for female fish, while males received half of this dose. The average total lipid content of the gonads from the weekly treated group, i.e. 20.6 ± 1.2 % for females and 18.0 ± 2.3 % for males, was significantly higher than the biweekly treated group, 16. ...

In farmed animals, individualities have demonstrated links to health and welfare. However, differential modulation of orexigenic, anorexigenic neuroendocrine and endocrine factors in different individuals with different individualities remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the contribution of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI), anorexigenic and orexigenic signal molecules to the regulation of appetite in different individuals of adult olive flounder exposed to social isolation stress. ...

To the Editor.— The recent dramatic rise in the incidence of syphilis challenges the medical community to recognize syphilis in all its guises. Report of a Case.— A 28-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of skin lesions. She had a history of intravenous drug abuse. One month before hospitalization, a papular lesion developed on the right side of her nose. The lesion continued to grow and became crusted and painful. She then noted additional similar lesions on her back. On examination, ...
