The central role of cysteine conjugate beta-lyase (beta-lyase) in the bioactivation of nephrotoxic halogenated hydrocarbons and the possibility of human exposure to these chemicals has focused interest on the beta-lyase from human kidney. Human kidney tissue was collected as surgical waste material, and subcellular fractions were isolated by differential centrifugation. Human beta-lyase activity, determined with S-(2-benzothiazolyl)-L-cysteine (BTC) as the substrate, was present in the cytosolic, ...

Paul L. Toubas, Russell M. Nelson,

At the end of the 19th century, under Dr. Tarnier's direction, the first trials of incubators were performed at the Paris Maternity. The success led to the construction of a special pavilion for sick newborns. The midwife-in-chief, Mrs. Henry, raised the funds for the construction. The results of the initial trial are reported. In 1892, the successor of Dr. Tarnier, Dr. Budin, the Chair of Obstetrics, did not approve of the condition of the nursery. Mrs. Henry left abruptly. The unit was placed ...

Abstract To study optimal conditions of preparation of saphenous veins as coronary artery bypass grafts, segments of saphenous veins were obtained from 29 consecutive patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. The saphenous vein segments were divided into three groups. In Group I, 10 saphenous vein segments were harvested using a "no-touch" technique without any other preparation aids. In Group II, 10 saphenous vein segments were removed while distended at 70–120 mm Hg with a balanced pH electrolyte ...

Eleven dogs received a double-lung-block allotransplantation under cardiopulmonary bypass. Six dogs survived over one hour with spontaneous breathing and normal right ventricular pressures. Postoperative blood gases and pressures are given for six animals. These data show a fall in systemic blood pressure and arterial oxygen partial pressure, a rise in PCO 2 , and no change in pH after completion of transplantation. Causes of death were haemorrhage (7), inadequate cardiopulmonary bypass (2), early anoxic ...

Our experience with the superior approach to the mitral valve includes 305 patients. The superior aspect of the left atrium as it presents in the transverse sinus between the aorta and superior vena cava is incised transversely to gain access to the valve.Care must be taken to avoid injuring the area adjacent to the aortic root. This approach consistently affords good exposure to the commissures and subvalvular structures of the mitral valve.Careful hemostasis is necessary in closing the atrium, as ...
