Abstract The Association of Space Explorers Committee on Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and its Panel on Asteroid Threat Mitigation have prepared a decision program to aid the international community in organizing a coordinated response to asteroid impact threats. The program is described in the ASE's report, Asteroid Threats: A Call for Global Response, which will be considered by the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in its 2009 sessions. The findings and recommendations of ...

The Cryogenic Telescope Assembly (CTA) on the Spitzer Space Telescope employs a revolutionary warm launch design. Unlike previous space cryogenic telescopes, the Spitzer telescope is mounted outside of the cryostat and was launched at ambient temperature. The telescope was cooled through a combination of passive radiation and controlled vapor cooling from the superfluid helium cryostat. Launched in August 2003 with 49 kg of helium, the 0.85-meter telescope cooled to below 5.5 K within the initial ...

The Cryogenic Telescope Assembly (CTA) houses the SIRTF Science Instruments and provides them a 1.3 K temperature heat sink. It also provides the telescope, which is maintained at 5.5 K temperature in order to achieve the low photon background required for the 160 micron detector array. This unique cryogenic/thermal system provides the necessary cooling through passive means along with use of vapor cooling from the helium gas vented from the 360 liter superfluid helium cryostat. The cryostat vacuum ...

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) is an instrument containing two charged-coupled device (CCD) cameras and a multi-anode multi-channel array (MAMA) detector being built by Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corporation for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The instrument is scheduled to be installed in the Hubble Space Telescope during a space shuttle mission in December of 1999. The CCD detectors need to operate at a temperature below -80 degrees C in order to avoid unacceptable dark current. This ...

We discuss the performance of liquid helium cryostats that have flown in space or are planned for space flight. Usual figures of merit are total cryostat mass or depletion rate of the cryogen. These often fail to accurately represent other important characteristics which affect cryostat performance such as the method used to survive launch lock-up or the temperature of the cryostat vacuum shell obtained by radiative cooling. To address these issues, we define the ratio, H/R in W day/l as metric ...

In the development of a concept for an experimental platform for demonstrating technologies associated with the on-orbit handling, transfer and storage of cryogenic propellants, credibility is enhanced with simulations of operations using thermodynamic models. Predictions have further credibility if the modeling technique is verified against simulations of actual cryogenic fuel transfers during ground testing. This paper will demonstrate the capability of simulating the transfer of liquid hydrogen ...

The SIRTF Cryogenic Telescope Assembly employs a multi-stage thermal/cryogenic system in which the telescope is cooled bo 5.5K by passive techniques combined with vapor cooling by the effluent from a superfluid helium cryostat. The cryostat and telescope are surrounded by an outer shell, which is passively cooled to an expected temperature of about 35K. Verifying the performance of this system by test cannot be practically accomplished by a single end-to-end test. In the SIRTF-CTA Performance Test, ...

SIRTF is the last of NASA's great observatories. The thermal function of the CTA is critical to the success of the SIRTF mission. The CTA cryogenic and thermal system will provide the low temperature environment that the telescope and science instruments require to conduct infrared observations. A key issue with the early flight data is the peak helium bath temperature, which depends upon cryostat isolation, the helium vent path, and pre-launch cryostat operations. This paper includes a general ...

This paper describes the development and testing of a two-phase fluid reservoir for use in advanced thermal control systems designed for space applications. The aim of this development is to construct a highly reliable reservoir with the capability of controlling the saturation temperature of the system working fluid. The design considerations are described along with the methods of achieving the operational requirements. In addition, results from the initial testing of the prototype are presented.

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is the last of NASA's four great observatories, scheduled for launch in January 2003. At the heart of the SIRTF Observatory is the Cryogenic Telescope Assembly (CTA) that provides a 1.4 K heat sink for the SIRTF Science Instruments while cooling the telescope to as low as 5.5 K in order to achieve thea low photon background. This unique cryogenic/thermal system provides the necessary cooling through passive means combined with vapor cooling by the helium ...

The instruments of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) are cooled directly by liquid helium, while the optical system is cooled by helium vapor. The greater the power dissipation into the liquid helium, the more vapor is produced, and the colder the telescope. Observations at shorter wavelengths do not require telescope temperatures as low as those required at shorter wavelengths. By taking advantage of this, it may be possible to extend the helium and mission lifetime by 10% or even 20%

The pressure of the cryogen within a dewar determines the operating temperature since the cryogen is typically in a saturated state. Thus, the operating temperature of a dewar is directly related to the ambient pressure external to the dewar and the flow losses associated with venting cryogen. Given the low vapor pressures of some cryogens, such as solid hydrogen, the vent flow from dewars used in space can enter the transitional and molecular flow regimes. In order to accurately predict the operating ...

Abstract The Low Temperature Micro-gravity Physics Facility (LTMPF) designed by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. contains a 180-l superfluid helium dewar for conducting fundamental physics experiments. The dewar and ancillary experiment electronics will be located on the Japanese experiment module-exposed facility (JEM-EF), a module of the International Space Station. The helium is expected to deplete over approximately 5 months, after which the facility will be returned for new experiments, refurbished, ...
