Abstract This is a theoretical essay which aims to reflect on the reasons for and why adolescents use drugs and their implications for clinical nursing care. It used the referential of social phenomenology of Alfred Schutz. The main reasons identified were: to attenuate existential crisis, form social bonds and to have fun. The reasons for this are related to the characteristics of adolescence, a breakdown in social and family ties and the conditions of programmatic vulnerability. Motivations provide ...

The objective of the present study was to collect, identify, and report the parasitic tick fauna found on wild Amazon animals received and attended at the Santarém Zoological Park from September 2004 to September 2013. In all, 56 animals, including 26 mammals and 30 reptiles, were sampled, from which 1172 ticks were collected and identified, comprising ...

Previously, we demonstrated the ability of radiolabeled antibodies recognizing the cryptococcal polysaccharide capsule to kill Cryptococcus neoformans both in vitro and in infected mice. This approach, known as radioimmunotherapy (RIT), uses the exquisite ability of antibodies to bind antigens to deliver microbicidal radiation. To create RIT reagents which would be efficacious against all major medically important fungi, we have selected monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to common surface fungal antigens ...

Pneumococcal infections remain a relevant cause of morbidity and mortality in children, especially in countries where vaccination has not been introduced. In contrast to the common belief by many pediatricians, the most important pneumococcal infections are of the respiratory tract and not invasive diseases. Many countries are facing concentrated HIV epidemics among vulnerable populations, including men who have sex with men (MSM). Unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) is the main HIV transmission route among them and its understanding in the different cultures and how it relates to HIV transmission, re-infection and development of HIV antiretroviral resistance has important public health implications. Data on UAI among Brazilian MSM are scarce. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors ...

We investigated the association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes and host cytokine gene polymorphisms and serum cytokine levels in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Serum IL-6, TNF-α, IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17A levels were measured in 67 HCV patients (68.2% genotype 1 [G1]) and 47 healthy controls. The HCV patients had higher IL-6, IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-10, and IL-17A levels than the controls. HCV G1 patients had higher IL-2 and IFN-γ levels than G2 patients. The -174IL6G>C, -308TNFαG>A, ...

NYVAC-C (vP2010), a recombinant vector expressing HIV subtype C gag, pol, env and nef antigens, was tested in a phase I study in healthy, HIV negative volunteers in London and Lausanne. Twenty-four participants were randomised to receive NYVAC-C (20) or matching placebo (4) at weeks 0 and 4, and assessed for safety and immunogenicity over 48 weeks. There were no serious adverse events, and no clinical or laboratory abnormalities or other events that led to withdrawal, interruption or dose reduction ...

ABSTRACT The use of polymeric residues in the civil construction has been the target of many studies aiming to reduce the volume of post-consumer plastics in the environment. This work focuses on the viability to use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) as partial replacement to sand in concrete. PET and PP flakes from post-consumer packings were used as light aggregate to partially replace, individually, 10% in volume of sand. The effect of adding these polymers was investigated ...
