Twin boundary formation at grain boundaries in multicrystalline Si during directional solidification was investigated by in situ observation of the crystal/melt interface. It was clearly shown that a twin boundary was formed on the {111} facet of grain-boundary groove at the crystal/melt interface. The large amount of undercooling in the melt at grain-boundary grooves promoted rapid crystallization and twin boundary formation.

The DI diesel engine has an advantage in terms of fuel economy, but disadvantages with respect to exhaust emissions and large combustion noise. To overcome these drawbacks, we have previously proposed the Modulated Kinetics (MK) concept [1], [2] of low-temperature, premixed combustion. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the potential of a new combustion system to reduce combustion noise and improve emission performance simultaneously. As a result of applying heavy EGR and retarding ...

Directed lithiation of 1-acylindole derivatives was investigated. It was discovered that a bulky 2,2-diethylbutanoyl (DEB) group could promote unusual C-7 lithiation. Especially in the case of 3-substituted 1-(DEB)indoles, selective C-7 lithiation was achieved in a synthetically useful level. The DEB group was readily removed by H2O/tert-BuOK/THF system after functionalization at C-7. This, therefore, allows easy generation of 3,7-disubstituted indole derivatives which are not readily available by ...

A case is reported of schwannoma of the right masseteric nerve, invading the pterygopalatine fossa and the parapharyngeal space through the mandibular notch in a 61-year-old woman. The tumor in this case was composed of four various-sized interconnected nodules, simulating a string of beads. The tumor was the cause of the patient's chronic hemicrania, as confirmed by the relief from and disappearance of head pain after surgical removal of the tumor. The most important aspects of this case are the ...

The growth inhibitory effects of chicken egg white ovomacroglobulin (ovoM) on Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were studied. The growth of protease-producing strains was greater than that of the strains producing little protease, and was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by ovoM, a potent protease inhibitor. Dose-dependent enhancement of growth of strains of S. marcescens and P. aeruginosa that produce little protease was observed with the medium treated with proteases. These results ...

The Friedel-Crafts acylation of ethyl 1H-indole-2-carboxylate (1) with various acylating reagents having a functional group or hetero atom and the acylation of some derivatives (6, 7, 8, and 9) of ethyl 1H-indole-2-carboxylate (1) with simple acylating reagents are described. Acylation occurred at the C3-position or on the benzene moiety (mainly at the C5-position) of the indole nucleus. The regioselectivity of the above acylation of indoles (1, 6, 7, 8, and 9) is discussed.

We have successfully developed the barrier SiOCH film for copper thermal diffusion by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and nitrous oxide We attempted to lower the k value and the leakage current by adding oxygen into the barrier silicon carbide (SiC) film. The film can protect Cu thermal diffusion at 450°C for 4 h in nitrogen The k value is lower than that for PECVD silicon nitride (SiN) and SiC films, and is almost the same as that of PECVD silicon ...

Macrophage-derived interleukin-12 (IL-12) is essential for the activation of a protective immune response against intracellular pathogens. In this study, we examined the regulation of IL-12 mRNA expression by monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) in response to Mycobacterium bovis BCG stimulation. A reverse transcription-PCR assay detected p40 mRNA of IL-12 at 3 h and showed a peak at 6 to 12 h with a subsequent decline. Semiquantitation of mRNA levels by competitive PCR revealed that pretreatment with ...

Three monoclonal antibodies, 1-7 (gamma 2b), 3-5 (gamma 1), and 8-30 (mu), specific to Fc epsilon receptors (Fc epsilon R) on human B cells were established. The two monoclonals (1-7 and 8-30) could inhibit the binding of IgE to Fc epsilon R in rosette formation assays, as well as FACS analysis, and were shown to recognize the same epitope of Fc epsilon R. The other monoclonal antibody (3-5) recognized the same molecule but a different epitope, and marginally inhibited the IgE binding. The molecules on ...

A most promising lightweight material termed cellular metal is of growing interest to industry because of its combination of strength and energy absorption. A new foaming agent, calcium carbonate, along with an appropriate technique are suggested to improve the metal structure and control the foaming process. An applied coating enhances wetting of the agent particles and improves the homogeneity of the foam. Structure and mechanical properties of the foams obtained were also studied. The results ...

The search for effective antibodies (Ab) for curable cancer immunotherapy has been a quest of many research groups in order to find an effective target that exists on the cancer cell surface. So far there have been no conclusive answers to shed light on the search. This study therefore aimed to bridge the gap of cancer therapy. Screening against 49 kinds of cell lines belonging to 11 kinds of solids cancers was performed. Isolation and characterization for approximately 4200 monoclonal antibodies ( ...

We have developed a silicon oxi-carbide and nitride (SiOCNH) barrier film to protect against copper (Cu) thermal diffusion by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using hexamethyldisiloxane, nitrous oxide ( N 2 O ) , and ammonia ( NH 3 ) gases. We tried to enhance the Cu barrier property and etching selectivity for low dielectric constant (low- k ) film by adding nitrogen (N) into the barrier silicon oxicarbide (SiOCH) film. The film protects against Cu thermal diffusion at 450°C for 4 h in N 2 . The k ...

Background The association of complement with the progression of acute T cell mediated rejection (ATCMR) is not well understood. We investigated the production of complement components and the expression of complement regulatory proteins (Cregs) in acute T-cell mediated rejection using rat and human renal allografts. Methods We prepared rat allograft and syngeneic graft models of renal transplantation. The expression of Complement components and Cregs was assessed in the rat grafts using quantitative ...

The aims of this study are (a) to determine the effect of training on the multiple-target lesion search performance; and (b) to examine the effect of target prevalence on the performance of radiologists and novices. We conducted four sessions of 500 trials in a lesion search on a medical image task in which participants searched for three different target lesions. Participants were ten radiologists and novices. In each session, the prevalence of the different target lesions varied from low (2 %) to high ( ...

About 39,000 patients were newly prescribed renal replacement therapy in Japan in 2011, resulting in a total of more than 300,000 patients being treated with dialysis. This high prevalence of treated end stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients is an emergent problem that requires immediate attention. We launched a prospective cohort study to evaluate population specific characteristics of the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this report, we describe the baseline characteristics and risk ...

A possible cause and the difference in clinical severity of serratial keratitis were investigated. Two strains of Serratia marcescens were isolated: one from a patient with severe liquefactive keratitis, who had diabetes mellitus, and one from a patient with mild superficial keratitis, but who had no underlying disease. When the same numbers of bacteria were injected separately into corneas of the same rabbits or guinea pigs, the strain from the first patient elicited severe corneal destruction, ...
