A new structure for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) was proposed in which the transparent conducting oxide (TCO) is omitted and the cathode is located on the opposite side of the titanium dioxide (TiO2) film surface to the side of light irradiation. DSCs with this structure are called back contact DSCs (BCDSCs). The structure and fabrication of the cathode of BCDSCs was investigated in comparison with silicon solar cells. BCDSCs with conversion efficiency of 7.1% were achieved by vacuum deposition ...

We report on the correlation between the flux, color and polarization variations on time scales of days--months in blazars, and discuss their universal aspects. We performed monitoring of 42 blazars in the optical and near-infrared bands from 2008 to 2010 using TRISPEC attached to the "Kanata" 1.5-m telescope. We found that 28 blazars exhibited "bluer-when-brighter" trends in their whole or a part of time-series data sets. This corresponds to 88% of objects that were observed for >10 days. Thus, our ...

Single-molecule pH sensors have been developed by utilizing molecular imaging of pH-responsive shape transition of nanomechanical DNA origami devices with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Short DNA fragments that can form i-motifs were introduced to nanomechanical DNA origami devices with pliers-like shape (DNA Origami Pliers), which consist of two levers of 170-nm long and 20-nm wide connected at a Holliday-junction fulcrum. DNA Origami Pliers can be observed as in three distinct forms; cross, antiparallel ...

In an attempt to isolate indigenous marine myxobacteria from coastal samples, we obtained two swarm forming bacteria. Both isolates formed cell aggregates which, at least in one isolate, developed to fruiting body-like structures consisting of a mass of myxospore-like cells. The optimum NaCl concentrations for their growth were between 2 and 3%, comparable to the NaCl concentration of seawater. This growth characteristic strongly suggests that the two isolates are specific marine bacteria. The 16S ...

Bithiazole-type antifungal products, cystothiazoles C-F (3–6), have been isolated from a culture broth of the myxobacterium Cystobacter fuscus as minor components. These are structurally related to cystothiazole A (1), which was isolated as a cytotoxic antibiotic from the same microorganism in our previous work. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses. These new compounds inhibit the phytopathogenic fungus, Phytophthora capsici, but are less active than 1.

Chiral β-ketonitriles bearing a stereogenic carbon center at the α-position are an important class of compounds, many of which serve as useful synthetic intermediates for the preparation of chiral 1,3-aminoalcohols, β-hydroxy nitriles, and related derivatives. Although the enantioselective electrophilic cyanation of enolate equivalents is one of the most promising approaches for the synthesis of chiral β-ketonitriles, the available methods are largely limited to reactions of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. ...

An efficient enantioselective Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction of indoles with α-CF3-substituted β-nitrostyrenes is disclosed. The key to success is the use of a chiral calcium BINOL bis(phosphate) complex as a Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction gives access to a wide variety of optically active indoles bearing trifluoromethylated all-carbon quaternary stereocenter (up to 20 examples) in high yields (up to 99%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98%) under mild reaction conditions. Nonactivated ...

Catalytic asymmetric iodoesterification of simple alkenes was achieved using a dinuclear zinc-3,3'-(R,S,S)-bis(aminoimino)binaphthoxide (di-Zn) complex. For iodoesterification using p-methoxybenzoic acid, the N-iodonaphthalenimide (NIN)-I2 system was effective for producing iodoesters in a highly enantioselective manner. The synthetic utility of chiral iodo-p-methoxybenzoates was also demonstrated. The quartet of metal ionic bond, hydrogen bond, halogen bond, and π-π stacking is harmonized on the ...

Stigmatella aurantiaca, a species of myxobacteria, produces a novel extracellular signaling molecule, 8-hydroxy-2,5,8-trimethyl-4-nonanone, which promotes its developmental cycle. To determine the absolute configuration of this pheromone, which contains one asymmetric carbon, we prepared the R- and S-enantiomers by stereoselective synthesis. The synthesized R- and S-enantiomers each showed nearly the same fruiting body-inducing activities as the natural pheromone. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry ( ...

An odor recorder has the capability of not only recording odors electronically but also reproducing it anytime and anywhere. In this paper, we developed a new type of odor recorder, composed of the odor blenders that generate the mixture of components at any composition using solenoid valves controlled by the delta–sigma modulation method. We optimized the parameters of modulation and the characteristic of the low pass filter by simulation. Moreover, the recipes of apple flavor, jasmine scent, and ...

A new method for the odor recorder, electronically recording the recipe of odors or scents made up of many components, was proposed. Although apple flavors have been recorded with a mixture of five components using the odor recorder in previous work, the number of odor components should be increased to expand the applicable range of odors. Since the collinearity problem of the odor sensor array became apparent with the increase of components, a new method based on variable transformation using singular ...

A dominant mutation in the gene for copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is the most frequent cause of the inherited form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Mutant SOD1 provokes progressive degeneration of motor neurons by an unidentified acquired toxicity. Exploiting both affinity purification and mass spectrometry, we identified a novel interaction between heat-shock protein 105 (Hsp105) and mutant SOD1. We detected this interaction both in spinal cord extracts of mutant SOD1(G93A) transgenic ...

Nonlinear optical interaction is crucial to all-optical signal processing. In metallic nanostructures, both linear and nonlinear optical interactions can be greatly enhanced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In the last few decades, saturation and reverse saturation of absorption in plasmonic materials have been unraveled. It is known that scattering is one of the fundamental light–matter interactions and is particularly strong in metallic nanoparticles due to SPR. However, previous methods measure ...
