Background: Abdominoplasty is one of the most common aesthetic operations. Wide bibliographic research has revealed that there is a safe method whereby two techniques—liposuction and abdominoplasty—can be associated in the same procedure. The authors present a new abdominoplasty technique combining a selective undermining with complete abdominal liposuction. Methods: The authors standardized steps with which to perform a safe association of traditional abdominoplasty with liposuction of the entire ...

We update and review a large pedigree originally described by Santos and Magalhães with familial gastric polyposis and a high incidence of gastric cancer. The present observation of male-to-male transmission of the disease clearly demonstrates the autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. The histologic review of the polyps present in several members of the family allowed the diagnosis of hyperplastic polyposis. Eight members of the family (two with concomitant gastric pathology) have severe cutaneous ...

Short-term muscle denervation is a reproducible model of tissue-specific insulin resistance. To investigate the molecular basis of insulin resistance in denervated muscle, the downstream signaling molecules of the insulin-signaling pathway were examined in intact and denervated soleus muscle of rats. Short-term denervation induced a significant fall in glucose clearance rates (62% of control, P < 0.05) as detected by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp and was associated with a significant decrease in ...

The effects of TsTx-V, an α-toxin isolated from Tityus serrulatus venom, on electrical activity and insulin secretion by rodent pancreatic islet cells were studied. TsTx-V (5.6 μg/ml) depolarized mouse pancreatic β-cells, diminished the membrane input resistance and increased the duration of the active phase of glucose-induced electrical activity. Similar results were observed with the Na+ channel agonist veratridine (110 μM). Both agents potentiated glucose (8.3 mM)-induced insulin secretion in rat ...

The prevalence of small ruminant lentivirus (SRL) infection was evaluated in goats and sheep in two counties of Pernambuco State, Brasil. Seriological examinations were performed from a total of 672 goats and 325 sheep, one year of age and older, at two abattoirs. Sera were analyzed by agar gel immunodiffusion using Maedi-Visna K-1514 antigens. There were 42 reactive samples (95% confidence interval 3.6% to 4.9%) in both slaughter houses. In Sao Lourenco da Mata county, 3.2% and 4.0% of goat and sheep ...

There are five systems to stratify the risk for the development of a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). This study aimed to prospectively validate all of them in the same cohort of participants to allow their direct comparison.A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all patients with diabetes but without an active DFU attending our podiatry section (n=364) from January 2008 to December 2010. Participants' characteristics and all variables composing the stratification systems were assessed at baseline. ...

Considering previous studies on the similarity between the chemical composition of the mineral trioxide aggregate and the Portland cement, the purpose of this study was to investigate the pulp response of dog's teeth after pulpotomy and direct pulp protection with MTA Angelus and white Portland cement. Thirty eight pulp remnants were protected with these materials. One hundred and twenty days after treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the specimens removed and prepared for histological analysis. ...

The tremendous environmental impact of pulping and bleaching effluents and the relatively low efficiency of the current biological remediation processes represent one of the most important problems of the paper industry. In this work the efficiency of heterogeneous and homogeneous advanced oxidative processes was evaluated toward the degradation of model substrates (phenol and lignin) and the remediation of paper effluents. Best results were found by application of the UV-H2O2 system, with almost ...

Multiple human stressors affect tropical intertidal sandstone reefs, but little is known about their biodiversity and the environmental impacts of these stressors. In the present study, multiple anthropogenic pressures were integrated using the relative environmental pressure index (REPI) and related to benthic community structure across an intertidal gradient in five sandstone reefs in the tropical South Atlantic coast. Greater species richness and diversity were noted in the low intertidal zones. ...

Mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder in adults. However, it is not clear whether mild OSA has significant metabolic complications. This study examined the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with mild OSA compared to control group.Adults (18-65 years of age) of both genders with a body mass index (BMI) ≤35 kg/m2 were included. The mild OSA group comprised of patients with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score of ≥5 but ≤15 events/hr of sleep, independent of other ...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the role of reflexivity in relation to archives and narratives. Design/methodology/approach The authors problematize the concept of “archive,” by engaging with debates in philosophy and the archival theory. The authors also revisit historical theories and debates on the role of the narrative within historiography. Finally, the authors consider reflexivity as a methodological attitude taken by the researcher at all stages of the investigation from challenging ...

The energetic demand of consumers increases with body size and temperature. This implies that energetic constraints may limit the trophic position of larger consumers, which is expected to be lower in tropical than in temperate regions to compensate for energy limitation. Using a global dataset of 3635 marine and freshwater ray‐finned fish species, we addressed if and how climate affects the fish body size–trophic position relationship in both freshwater and marine ecosystems, while controlling ...

The current outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, named coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), is not the first well-known spillover of an animal originated virus to infect humans. However, one of the few to make such a fast jump in a powerful evolutionary shortcut. The incredible pattern of aggressiveness worldwide since the beginning of the outbreak is that up to 20% of those infected need hospitalization and 5% evolve to critical conditions, not limited ...

The coral reefs of Pirangi beach have suffered the impact of anthropic actions, mainly those related to tourism. To evaluate these effects, algal samples were collected at nine stations, distributed along the reef fringe. The macrobenthic community (algae/coral) was identified through photographic methods. We have examined the genotoxicity and the chemopreventive potential of Copaifera multijuga oleoresin (CM) and CA. Genotoxicity assessment was examined with the peripheral blood micronucleus test and the comet assay (male Swiss mouse hepatocytes). In the chemoprevention study, we evaluated the effects of ...

Capecitabine is an important anticancer drug whose synthesis comprises late-stage carbamoylation and ester hydrolysis. Herein we report the use of the Schotten–Baumann reaction in order to perform these transformation in one pot both in batch and under continuous flow. Environmental and occupational exposure to benzene from fuels is a major cause for concern for national and international authorities, as benzene is a known carcinogen in humans and there is no safe limit for exposure to carcinogens. Abstract A continuous model for the transverse vibrations of cracked beams including the effect of shear deformation is derived. Partial differential equations of motion and associated boundary conditions are obtained via the Hu-Washizu-Barr variational principle, which allows simultaneous and independent assumptions on the displacement, stress and strain fields. The stress and strain concentration caused by the presence of a crack are represented by so-called crack disturbance functions, which ...
