Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the aetiological agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA), a debilitating disease of sheep and goats. Mechanical alloying of elemental Cu and Sb powders yielded nanostructured Cu2Sb. Structural, thermal and optical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction, photoacoustic and Raman spectroscopies. The positions of the expected Raman active modes were determined by first-principles density functional theory and compared with Raman scattering measurements. From photoacoustic absorption spectroscopy, thermal diffusivity and others transport properties were obtained.

Motivated by existing experimental data, we study here the influence of interface mixing on the magnetic behavior of ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{6}/{\mathrm{Pt}}_{5}(111)$ multilayers. The magnetic behavior of thin layers of Cr in Fe/Cr/Fe(001) trilayers and superlattices is studied using the first principles self-consistent RS-LMTO-ASA (real space -- linear muffin-tin orbital -- atomic sphere approximation) method. The effects of lattice compression and interface mixing are investigated, and it is shown that they can cause large reductions of the Cr magnetic moments.

We have observed implanted Fe ions to be nonmagnetic in the group VIIb hosts Tc and Re, by applying the in-beam perturbed angular $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray distribution method. This result is in agreement with local spin density calculations for Fe in Tc using both supercell and single impurity approaches. The results are of key importance for a reasonable and consistent understanding of the basic, general features of local magnetic moment formation on Fe ions in transition metal hosts.
