The relationship between operating time and postoperative morbidity has not been fully characterized in lung resection surgery. We aimed to determine the variables associated with prolonged operative times and their influence on postoperative complications after video-thoracoscopic lobectomy.Patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer from December 2016 to March 2018, within the prospective registry of the Spanish Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery Group were identified. Biodeterioration damage is an important issue in conservation and restoration of built heritage, especially when ceramic materials are used. Biological colonization of ceramic roofing tiles by lichens is a common phenomenon. However, there are no reports to date of lichens removal from unglazed roofing tiles for conservation purposes. This paper for the first time reveals the results of a combined procedure undertaken to assess the removal of lichens on different kinds of unglazed ceramic roofing ...

Abstract Background Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) has replaced tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in many clinical settings. However, concerns remain about potential metabolic complications of TAF. We aimed to evaluate changes in weight, laboratory markers, and metabolic-related clinical events after replacing TDF with TAF. Methods Multicenter prospective cohort study in the Spanish CoRIS cohort. We included virologically suppressed adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receiving TDF for more ...

Modern ART has now achieved the goal of maintaining HIV RNA suppression with minimum drug-related toxicities. Indeed, in high-income settings, the main health issues in adult people living with HIV (PLWH) today are diseases not directly associated with HIV. These conditions have become the central topic of discussion in HIV clinical forums. While they are common in the general population and typically associated with the aging process, their burden, diagnosis, clinical course and subsequent therapy ...

Accordingly, this study aimed to compare the chemical composition and ultrastructural morphology of Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur-des-Fosses, France), ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Johnson City, TN, USA), and Bio-C Repair (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil), as well as their biological effects on human dental pulp cells. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. It is broadly described that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is mainly overexpressed in CRC but less is known regarding post-translational modifications of this enzyme that may regulate its activity, intracellular localization and stability. Since metabolic and proteomic profile analysis is essential for cancer prognosis and diagnosis, our hypothesis is that the analysis of correlations between these specific parameters and ...

HIV infection exerts profound and perhaps irreversible damage to the gut mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues, resulting in long-lasting changes in the signals required for the coordination of commensal colonization and in perturbations at the compositional and functional level of the gut microbiota. These abnormalities in gut microbial communities appear to affect clinical outcomes, including T-cell recovery, vaccine responses, HIV transmission, cardiovascular disease, and cancer pathogenesis. For ...

Intracellular Ca 2+ signaling controls numerous cellular functions. Mitochondria respond to cytosolic Ca 2+ changes by adapting mitochondrial functions and, in some cell types, shaping the spatiotemporal properties of the cytosolic Ca 2+ signal. Numerous methods have been developed to specifically and quantitatively measure the mitochondrial‐free Ca 2+ concentrations ([Ca 2+ ] m ), but there are still significant discrepancies in the calculated absolute values of [Ca 2+ ] m in stimulated live cells. These ...

Fungal cell wall synthesis is achieved by a balance of glycosyltransferase, hydrolase and transglycosylase activities. Transglycosylases strengthen the cell wall by forming a rigid network of crosslinks through mechanisms that remain to be explored. Here we study the function of the Aspergillus fumigatus family of five Crh transglycosylases. Although crh genes are dispensable for cell viability, simultaneous deletion of all genes renders cells sensitive to cell wall interfering compounds. In vitro ...

There are multiple ways bacteria can be transported from its origin to another area or substrate. Water, food handlers, insects and other animals are known to serve as a vehicle for bacterial dispersion. However, the importance of the air in open areas as a possible way of bacterial dissemination has not been so well analyzed. In this study, we investigated the airborne dissemination of Escherichia coli from the inside of a dairy cattle farm to the immediate environment. The air samples were taken ...

Non-proliferative proteinuric diseases are the most common primary glomerular disorders causing end-stage renal disease. These disorders may associate low level glomerular inflammation and podocyte expression of inflammatory mediators. However, the factors regulating podocyte expression of inflammatory mediators in vivo in non-immune disorders are poorly understood. We have now explored the regulation and role of TWEAK receptor Fn14 in mediating glomerular inflammation in cultured podocytes and ...

TWEAK (tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis) is a TNF superfamily cytokine that activates the fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) receptor. Transcriptional analysis of experimental kidney tubulointerstitial inflammation showed a correlation between an upregulation of the mRNA for the transmembrane chemokine CXCL16, a T-cell chemoattractant, and Fn14 activation. Exogenous TWEAK increased mouse kidney CXCL16 expression and T-lymphocyte infiltration in vivo, processes inhibited ...

The CPMP is an NP-complete problem, well-known in the operations research field, arising from a wide spectrum of applications in diverse fields such as telecommunications, manufacturing and industrial engineering. The CPMP problem has been previously tackled by using distinct algorithmic approaches, among which we focus on evolutionary computation techniques. The work ...

We have calculated the electronic energies and optimum geometries of C(70) (q+) and C(68) (q+) fullerenes (q=0-14) by means of density functional theory. The ionization energies for C(70) and C(68) fullerenes increase more or less linearly as functions of charge, consistent with the previously reported behavior for C(60) and C(58) [S. Diaz-Tendero et al., J. Chem. Phys. 123, 184306 (2005)]. The dissociation energies corresponding to the C(70) (q+)-->C(68) (q+)+C(2), C(70) (q+)-->C(68) ((q-1)+)+C(2) (+), C(70) ( ...

We have analyzed in detail the structure of the smallest fullerenes C(n) (20 < or = n < or = 72) obtained in B3LYP/6-31G* calculations. All these systems, except for C60, C70, and C72, necessarily present adjacent pentagons in their structure. For the most stable classical isomers, we have studied the variation of bond distances, HOMO-LUMO gaps and enthalpies of formation with fullerene size. A classification of the bonds in 9 different motifs permits to gain insight in the factors determining the fullerene ...

Abstract Dissociation energies and ionization potentials of neutral and singly-charged fullerenes have been obtained from density functional theory calculations for sizes ranging from 40 to 70 atoms. Good agreement with available experimental data has been obtained. Our results confirm that magic number fullerenes with n = 50, 60 and 70 present the largest ionization potentials and dissociation energies. We have found that the most stable isomer for n = 62 is a non-classical structure with a chain of ...

An unusually substantial coupling is observed across the hydrogen bond of fully 15N-labeled compound 1 when it is studied by 1H and 15N NMR spectroscopy. The structure was determined by X-ray diffraction and shown to correspond to tautomer 1 a (both in the solid state and in solution). These results open up a new field of hydrogen-bond research by NMR spectroscopic methods.
