The non-uniform response in infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) detectors produces corrupted images with a fixed-pattern noise. In this paper we present an enhanced adaptive scene-based non-uniformity correction (NUC) technique. The method simultaneously estimates detector's parameters and performs the non-uniformity compensation using a neural network approach. In addition, the proposed method doesn't make any assumption on the kind or amount of non-uniformity presented on the raw data. The strength ...

Abstract This work presents the first results on the development and characterization of novel nanobiocomposite fibers prepared by electrospinning of zein/clay mixtures (from 99/1 to 75/25 wt/wt) from ethanol‐based solutions. To do so, commercial ceramic materials of different nature, such as organomodified and unmodified mica, kaolinite, montmorillonite, and zeolite were employed and compared. A significant decrease in fiber diameter was observed as the clay fraction increased in the hybrid material. ...

In this work, spatial–spectral experimental issues affecting the detection of radical emissions in a natural gas flame are discussed and studied by a radiometric analysis of the flame spectral emission. As results of this analysis, Local and Global Spectral Radiation Measurements (LSRM and GSRM respectively) techniques are proposed, and guidelines for selecting the radical emission bands and spatial location of photodetectors are given. Two types of experiments have been performed in order to demonstrate ...

Disability after traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) results from physical trauma and from "secondary mechanisms of injury" such as low metabolic energy levels, oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation. In order to prove if early metabolic reactivation is a better therapeutic option than antioxidant therapy in the acute phase of TSCI, spinal cord contusions were performed in adult rats using a well-characterized weight drop technique at thoracic 9 level. After TSCI, pyrophosphate of thiamine or non- ...

This paper describes the formulation, morphology and biocide properties of novel antimicrobial electrospun zein based ultrathin fiber structures. From the results, it was found that the electrospun fibers of zein can turn the material into a new strong antimicrobial ultrathin-structured system due to retention of remnant amounts of trifluoroacetic acid as determined by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy. Unfortunately, this system may be considered to yield very aggressive high acidic media due to release of ...

The spatial fixed-pattern noise (FPN) inherently generated in infrared (IR) imaging systems compromises severely the quality of the acquired imagery, even making such images inappropriate for some applications. The FPN refers to the inability of the photodetectors in the focal-plane array to render a uniform output image when a uniform-intensity scene is being imaged. We present a noise-cancellation-based algorithm that compensates for the additive component of the FPN. The proposed method relies ...

Electrospun nanofibers of collagen are regarded as very promising materials for tissue engineering applications because they can reproduce the morphology of the natural bone but have as a drawback a poor structural consistency in wet conditions. We have developed a recursive estimator for the offset nonuniformity (NU) present in infrared (IR) focal-plane-array (FPA) imaging systems. The estimator is optimal in the least-square error sense and estimates the offset NU using only the collected scene data. Our scene-based nonuniformity correction (NUC) method exploits Kalman's theory in order to estimate a constant in noise. The method is based upon two key assumptions: (i) the input irradiance at each detector is assumed to be a random variable ...

For a nonconfined oil flame, the sensor responses for the axial intensity were highly correlated with the measurements obtained with a radiometer. For ...

The statistics of photon coincidence counting in photon-correlated beams is thoroughly investigated considering the effect of the finite coincidence resolving time. The correlated beams are assumed to be generated using parametric downconversion, and the photon streams in the correlated beams are modeled by two partially correlated Poisson point processes. An exact expression for the mean rate of coincidence registration is developed using techniques from renewal theory. It is shown that the use ...

A statistical algorithm has been developed to compensate for the fixed-pattern noise associated with spatial nonuniformity and temporal drift in the response of focal-plane array infrared imaging systems. The algorithm uses initial scene data to generate initial estimates of the gain, the offset, and the variance of the additive electronic noise of each detector element. The algorithm then updates these parameters by use of subsequent frames and uses the updated parameters to restore the true image ...

It is well known that non-uniformity noise in focal-plane array (FPA) sensors, which is due to the pixel-to-pixel variation in the detectors' responses, can considerably degrade the quality of images since it results in a fixed pattern that is superimposed on the true scene. This paper addresses the benefits of non-uniformity correction (NUC) pre- processing on the performance of a number of existing post- processing algorithms. The post-processing applications considered are image registration (motion ...

Electrohydrodynamic processing (EHDP) is a straightforward method to generate polymer micro‐ and nanostructures that can be applied to the food, pharmaceutical, environmental, and biomedical areas, among others, since these can yield materials with higher performance. Some of the EHDP's advantages over other polymer processing technologies rely on its high versatility, by which the final assembly ...
