Off-line amplification: A low-cost inkjet-printed gold nanoparticle immunoarray was integrated into a microfluidic device for multiple protein determinations. The use of heavily labeled magnetic beads allows optimization either for ultrasensitive detection of biomarker proteins (low fg mL−1 levels) or for rapid 8 min assays within clinically relevant detection ranges. Conventional protein detection methods such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) often take many hours to complete and usually ...

UniRef-Enriched COG0151 (UECOG) was tested with distinct procedures to compare recruited members with the recruiters: PSI-BLAST, secondary structure overlap (SOV), Seed Linkage, COGnitor, shared domain content, and neighbor-joining single-linkage, and observed that the former four agree in their validations.Presently, the UniRef50-based recruitment procedure enriches the COG database for Archaea, Bacteria and its subgroups Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and other bacteria by 2.2-, 8.0-, ...

Much forensic inference based upon DNA evidence is made assuming Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) for the genetic loci being used. Several statistical tests to detect and measure deviation from HWE have been devised, and their limitations become more obvious when testing for deviation within multiallelic DNA loci. The most popular methods-Chi-square and Likelihood-ratio tests-are based on asymptotic results and cannot guarantee a good performance in the presence of low frequency genotypes. Since ...

In order to assure that the use of cerrado fruits occur in a sustainable way, studies to investigate their characteristics are extremely relevant. In this context, the present study aims to describe some chemical parameters of pequi fruits picked in three municipalities in southwestern Goiás State (Jataí, Rio Verde, and Serranópolis). In each city, two populations of pequi trees - pequizeiros, denominated areas, were selected. In each area, eight trees were selected for the fruit to be picked. The ...

Abstract Estrogen acts via its receptor (ER) to stimulate cell growth and differentiation in the mammary gland. ER and progesterone receptor (PR), which is regulated by estrogen via ER, have been used as prognostic markers in clinical management of breast cancer patients. Patients with ER − breast tumors have a poorer prognosis than patients with ER + tumors. The aim of the present study was the identification of tumor‐associated genes differentially expressed in breast tumors regarding the presence or ...

Purpose: Müller cells (MCs) are a major source of VEGF in diabetic retinopathy (DR). Vascular endothelial growth factor is the main therapeutic target for treating DR. This study aimed to investigate whether autophagy is involved in MC response under high glucose (HG). Methods: Rat retinal Müller cells (rMCs) were exposed to normal or high glucose in and out of presence of pharmacologic inhibitors and activators and small interfering RNA (siRNA) for p62/SQTSM1 for 24 hours. Results: High glucose induces ...

Recent studies suggest that habitat amount is the main determinant of species richness, whereas habitat fragmentation has weak and mostly positive effects. Here, we challenge these ideas using a multi-taxa database including 2230 estimates of forest-dependent species richness from 1097 sampling sites across the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot. We used a structural equation modeling approach, accounting not only for direct effects of habitat loss, but also for its indirect effects ( ...

Immunoglobulin-A (IgA) is an important mediator of immunity and has been associated with protection against several pathogens, although its role in gastrointestinal infections remains unclear. Then, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize qualitative evidence in respect of IgA as mediator of protective immunity against gastrointestinal helminths. Following recommended guidelines, we searched for articles published between January 1990 and October 2019 that evaluated IgA levels and their ...

Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the major products of the marijuana plant, is devoid of marijuana's typical psychological effects. In contrast, potential antipsychotic efficacy has been suggested based on preclinical and clinical data (Zuardi et al., 2002). Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is caused by dimorphic fungi from theParacoccidioides brasiliensis complex. Previous studies have demonstrated that the severity of disease is associated with a T-helper 2 immune response characterised by high interleukin (IL)-4 production. In the present study we analysed two polymorphisms in the IL-4 gene (-590 C/T and intron-3 microsatellite) in 76 patients with PCM and 73 control subjects from an endemic area.
