Extrapolating toxicant effects with a fixed application factor (AF) approach or one of the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models presumes that toxicant effects on single, individual-level endpoints reflect effects at the ecosystem level. Measured effect concentrations on plankton from multispecies field tests using tributyltin (TBT) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) were compared with published laboratory single-species test results and measured in situ concentrations. Extrapolation methods ...

Monolayer graphene oxide (mGO) is shown to effectively protect molecular thin films from reorganization and function as an atomically thin barrier for vapor-deposited Ti/Al metal top electrodes. Fragile organic Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of C22 fatty acid cadmium salts (cadmium(II) behenate) were covered by a compressed mosaic LB film of mGO flakes. These hybrid LB films were examined with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray reflectivity, both with and without the metal top electrodes. While the ...

A novel method using solution-processed ultrathin chemically derived graphene films as soft top contacts for the non-destructive fabrication of molecular junctions is demonstrated. We believe this protocol will greatly enrich the solid-state test beds for molecular electronics due to its low-cost, easy-processing and flexible nature.

A new type of solid-state molecular junction is introduced, which employs reduced graphene oxide as a transparent top contact that permits a self-assembled molecular monolayer to be photoswitched in situ, while simultaneously enabling charge-transport measurements across the molecules. The electrical switching behavior of a less-studied molecular switch, dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene, is described, which is used as a test case.

Graphene oxide (GO) is believed to become applicable in biomedical products and medicine, thereby necessitating appropriate safety evaluation dependent on their applications and the route of administration. We have examined the effect of GO form (in solution versus immobilized) and oxidation state on two related elements of innate immunity: the complement system and interleukin-6 (IL-6) release in human blood. In solution, there was a decrease in GO-mediated complement activation with decreasing surface ...

Abstract The acute toxicities of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) and tributyltin (TBT) to the marine copepod Acartia tonsa were tested in 48‐h tests at two salinities, 18 and 28‰. For LAS 48‐h median lethal concentration (LC50) values were 2.1 and 8.8 mg/L, respectively. For TBT the 48‐h LC50 values were 0.47 and 0.24 μg/L, respectively. The given effect concentrations are based on nominal concentrations. In an 8‐d test, effects of LAS on larval survival and development effects (effective concentration, ...

The effects of tri-butyl-tin (TBT) on autotrophic pico-, nano and microplankton were assessed by a marine enclosure experiment. In accordance with the pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT) concept, an increased tolerance was found for microplankton in enclosures amended with 0.01, 0.6 and 10 nM TBT. In contrast, nanoplankton showed increased tolerance only in an enclosure amended with 10 nM TBT. Neither the entire phytoplankton community nor picoplankton showed increased tolerance. These observations ...

The use of graphene materials as conductive inks for flexible and transparent electronics is promising, but challenged by the need for stabilizers, specialized organic solvents, and/or high temperature annealing, severely limiting performance or compatibility with substrates and printing techniques. Here, the development of a scalable water‐based graphene oxide ink is reported that can be screen‐printed on flexible plastic substrates and subsequently reduced using a 1:1 mixture of trifluoroacetic ...

Finding new plasmonic materials with prominent optical properties and unique physical and chemical characteristics, which are merits of traditional gold and silver, is of great interest to many applications. This work uses a series of powerful numerical methods, such as density functional theory (DFT) and electromagnetic modeling approaches, to predict the plasmonic response of a mechanically well‐known material, zirconium nitride (ZrN). DFT first delivers an electronic analysis and optical dispersion ...

The transversal conductance through thin multi-layered films of reduced graphene oxide was studied as a function of temperature in a solid-state device setup designed for molecular electronic measurements. Upon cooling to cryogenic temperatures, the resistivity of the films increased by about three orders of magnitude compared to the value at room temperature, and this temperature dependence was described by a variable range hopping model. Above a certain threshold voltage the films could be annealed ...

Mixed responses of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes to reduced tillage/no-till are widely reported across soil types and regions. In a field experiment on a Danish sandy loam soil we compared N2O emissions during winter barley growth following five years of direct drilling (DD), reduced tillage (RT) or conventional tillage (CT). Each of these tillage treatments further varied in respect to whether the resulting plot crop residues were retained (+Res) or removed (−Res). Sampling took place from autumn 2007 ...

In organic cropping systems, legumes, cover crops (CC), residue incorporation, and manure application are used to maintain soil fertility, but the contributions of these management practices to soil nitrogen (N) supply remain obscure. We examined potential sources of N for winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) in four experimental cropping systems established in 1997 on three soil types. Three of the four systems were under organic management. Topsoil N, depth of the A horizon, and cumulated inputs of ...

Chemically converted graphene is highly relevant for transparent conducting film applications such as display and photovoltaic uses. So far, the major obstacle for realizing the potential has been to fully reduce/deoxygenate the graphene oxide (GO), which is challenging in part due to the pronounced aggregation that accompanies deoxygenation of GO in solution. Surface immobilization of monolayered graphene oxide (mGO) in Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films was investigated as a method to circumvent this problem. ...

Abstract A protocol for the bottom-up self-assembly of nanogaps is developed through molecular linking of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Two π-conjugated oligo(phenylene ethynylene) molecules (OPE) with dithiocarbamate anchoring groups are used as ligands for the AuNPs. OPE-4S with a dithiocarbamate in each end of the molecule and a reference molecule OPE-2S with only a single dithiocarbamate end group. The linking mechanism of OPE-4S is investigated by using a combination of TEM, UV-Vis absorption and ...

Abstract. The use of organic soils by agriculture involves drainage and tillage, and the resulting increase in C and N turnover can significantly affect their greenhouse gas balance. This study estimated annual fluxes of CH4 and N2O, and ecosystem respiration (Reco), from eight organic soils managed by agriculture. The sites were located in three regions representing different landscape types and climatic conditions, and three land use categories were covered (arable crops, AR, grass in rotation, ...

Correct classification of death causes is an important component of transplant trials. We aimed to develop and validate a system to classify causes of death in hematopoietic stem cell (HSCT) and solid organ (SOT) transplant recipients. Case record forms (CRF) of fatal cases were completed, including investigator-designated cause of death. Deaths occurring in 2010 to 2013 were used for derivation; and were validated by deaths occurring in 2013 to 2015. Underlying cause of death (referred to as recorded ...

Significance Short and damaged DNA is ubiquitous in most environments and can survive more than half a million years. We show that naturally competent environmental bacteria can take up such degraded DNA and incorporate it into their genomes, including DNA from a 43,000-y-old woolly mammoth bone. The process occurs as part of cellular DNA replication and may resemble the earliest forms of horizontal gene transfer. Our findings suggest that natural genetic exchange of DNA from dead and even extinct ...

In this article some of the critical aspects of Web 2.0 are mapped in relation to labor and the production of user generated content. For many years the Internet was considered an apt technology for subversion of capitalism by the Italian post-Marxists. What we have witnessed, however, is that the Internet functions as a double-edged sword; the infrastructure does foster democracy, participation, joy, creativity and sometimes creates zones of piracy. But, at the same time, it has become evident ...
