Extracts of Smilax campestris Griseb (Smilacaceae) have been employed in the treatment of several inflammatory diseases as a traditional herbal medicine. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the observed effects remain elusive. Macrophages are known to play a central role in inflammatory responses. These cells are activated in response to a diversity of danger signals and produce several mediators of inflammation that eventually regulate the immune response. For all the above ...

Inequalities in terms of access and quality of healthcare persist, especially among Andean populations, such as the community of Chopcca. Here, we describe the perception of healthcare provided in medical facilities as well as the practices linked to health care in residents of settlements in the Huancavelica region. We carried out a cross-sectional study by means of a structured questionnaire administered to 775 residents of urban and rural towns of the Yauli and Paucará districts. 68.7% refer ...

Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) is a multiorgan, pro‐inflammatory syndrome that impairs bone metabolism. Pro‐inflammatory cytokines and bone catabolism enhance periodontal disease, a local inflammatory, bacteria‐induced disease that causes bone loss and periodontal soft tissue destruction. Methods and results Medical and dental examinations were performed on patients with HF ( n = 39), following heart transplantation (post‐HTx, n = 38) and controls ( n = 32). Blood, saliva, and gingival crevicular fluid were ...

From 1961 to 1980 17 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who were less than 30 years old at time of diagnosis were treated at the two oncologic hospitals in Puerto Rico. Fourteen of the tumors were lymphoepitheliomas and the remaining three were anaplastic carcinomas. Ninety-four percent of the patients were found to have neck adenopathy at the initial examination and in 65% of them the adenopathy was bilateral. The 5-year actuarial survival was 14. The main cause of failure was the distant metastasis. ...

Abstract A histochemical method was used to determine copper localization in the endometrial mucosa of intrauterine contraceptive device wearers with 120 mm. 2 of copper (TCu-120). It was determined that copper delivered by the device localized preferentially in the epithelial cell of the endometrium and concentrated in the secretory vacuole of this cell during the progestational phase. During the estrogenic phase, copper was absent from the endometrial mucosa which leads us to the conclusion that its concentration ...
