Energy drinks (EDs) are widely consumed by adolescents and young adults. Almost all kinds of arrhythmias have been reported following EDs consumption, most of which is atrial fibrillation (AF). Atrial conduction time prolongation and heterogeneous sinusal impulses propagation to the atriums are the key electrophysiological mechanisms leading AF. We aimed to evaluate the acute effects of Red Bull ED ingestion on atrial electromechanical conduction times in healthy young adults. After a 12-hour fasting, ...

A novel steroid molecular rotor was obtained in four steps from the naturally occurring spirostane sapogenin diosgenin. The structural and dynamic characterization was carried out by solution NMR, VT X-ray diffraction, solid state 13C CPMAS, and solid state 2H NMR experiments. They allowed the identification of a fast dynamic process with a frequency of 14 MHz at room temperature, featuring a barrier to rotation Ea = 7.87 kcal mol–1. The gathered experimental evidence indicated the presence of a hydrogen ...

Polyamines are classically known by their names of putrescine, spermine, and spermidine. They are synthesized endogenously from ornithine and are interconvertible. In addition, an exogenous supply of polyamines is provided by dietary intake and by intestinal absorption from the products of bacterial metabolism. Polyamine uptake occurs almost entirely in the gut, and afterward the various forms are metabolized in different tissues under the strict regulation of ornithine decarboxylase, which is the ...

Fluo-3, a fluorescent Ca2+ indicator, is sequestered by isolated rat liver mitochondria and is an effective probe for evaluating the concentration and kinetics of change of mitochondrial matrix ionized calcium ([Ca2+]m) under a variety of conditions. At the wavelengths employed, there is no significant interference by auto-fluorescence. There is an insignificant release of the indicator over four hours and the loading and presence of fluo-3 has no effect on respiratory rate or oxidative phosphorylation. ...

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a rare idiopathic diffuse airspace disease characterized by intra-alveolar accumulation of large quantities of lipoproteinaceous material, with preservation of the lung interstitium. The clinical course of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is variable. Spontaneous resolution is known to occur in up to a quarter of the cases. We describe two patients with untreated pulmonary alveolar proteinosis who experienced complete clinical, functional and radiographic resolution. ...

Myositis ossificans circumscripta is a form of heterotopic ossification that is benign in nature associated to a trauma, but may appear clinically and radiologically as a malignant neoplasm. We describe a rare case of calcifying of myositis ossificans not associated to trauma in a 35-year-old woman with a mass in her upper third and external of right thigh. We discuss some of the difficulties of diagnosis and histological evolution of the lesion.Myositis ossificans; Thigh; Differential diagnosis; ...

As a result of a gasoline spill in an urban area, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Electromagnetic Profiling (EMP) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) methods were used in order to define the contamination plume and to optimize the drilling and soil sampling activities. The VOC anomalies (recent contamination) indicated that a gas station located at the study site is an active contamination source. The mature contaminated zones defined by ERT and EMP methods corresponded with low resistivity ...

The synthesis, crystallization, single crystal X-ray structure, and solid state dynamics of molecular rotor 3 provided with a high symmetry order and relatively cylindrical bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BCO) rotator linked to mestranol fragments were investigated in this work. By use of solid state (13)C NMR, three rotating fragments were identified within the molecule: the BCO, the C19 methoxy and the C18 methyl groups. To determine the dynamics of the BCO group in crystals of 3 by variable temperature (1) ...

This paper reviews the fingerprint classification literature looking at the problem from a double perspective. We first deal with feature extraction methods, including the different models considered for singular point detection and for orientation map extraction. Then, we focus on the different learning models considered to build the classifiers used to label new fingerprints. Taxonomies and classifications for the feature extraction, singular point detection, orientation extraction and learning ...

In the first part of this paper we reviewed the fingerprint classification literature from two different perspectives: the feature extraction and the classifier learning. Aiming at answering the question of which among the reviewed methods would perform better in a real implementation we ended up in a discussion which showed the difficulty in answering this question. No previous comparison exists in the literature and comparisons among papers are done with different experimental frameworks. Moreover, ...

Digital technologies play a key role in the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda. However, their contribution to this goal depends on the digital culture of society. In this context, future teachers’ knowledge of e-sustainability is of paramount importance, as the responsible and sustainable behaviour of future generations largely depends on their skills in this area. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the existence of possible differences in digital competences in sustainability among trainee teachers. ...

Objective We investigated the results obtained with a basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (b-CPR) program (PROCES) specifically designed for secondary school students (14–16 years old) and taught by emergency physicians. Methods We used a multiple-choice test with 20 questions (10 on theory and 10 on skills) answered before and immediately after and 1 year after receiving the b-CPR course. Satisfactory learning was considered when at least 8 out of 10 skill questions were correctly answered. We investigated ...
