The barrier properties of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were investigated in multinanolayer systems, probing the effect of confinement, the compatibility between the confining and the confined polymer, crystal orientation, and amorphous phase properties. The multilayer coextrusion process was used to confine PLLA between two amorphous polymers (polystyrene, PS; and polycarbonate, PC), which have different chemical affinities with PLLA. Confined PLLA layers of approximately 20 nm thickness were obtained. ...

Children with microcephaly due to vertical exposure to Zika virus are an interesting population for investigation. Highlighted among their unique aspects are those related to nutrition due to its impact on child growth and development. Knowledge about the nutrition of microcephalic infants can help mothers and caregivers provide better care. Thus, this study aimed to describe the nutritional status and feeding practices of infants with microcephaly due to Zika virus exposure at birth and 12–23 months ...

The physical aging behavior of amorphous polylactide constrained against polystyrene in layers of 300 nm, thanks to the layer–multiplying co–extrusion process, was investigated by fast–scanning calorimetry (FSC). By cooling down the sample from the liquid state to the glassy one at very fast scanning rates, it was possible to investigate the structural relaxation of the polymer glass at high temperatures for which the time needed to reach the equilibrium was shortened. Therefore it was possible to ...

Knowledge of the fundamental parameters of the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) molecular chain and resulting macroscopic properties is important for successful application of this polymer in different domains. Rheological data show that PLA has the typical properties of a linear and semi-stiff polymer chain. The stereochemical composition of the atactic polymer chain does not impact the rheological, mechanical, and barrier properties of PLA. Most commercial PLA grades contain a large majority of l-lactic ...

Multi-nanolayered polystyrene/poly(l,l-lactide) (PS/PLLA) films were obtained by the layer-multiplying coextrusion process, with an individual PLLA layer thickness as thin as 20 nm. The confinement of the amorphous PLLA induced a change in the molecular mobility, evidenced by a drop of the cooperative rearranging region (CRR) size at the glass transition. The annealing of confined PLLA layers revealed slower crystallization kinetics and two-dimensional crystalline growth geometry. Furthermore, the ...

ABSTRACT Nanocomposites films were designed from soy protein isolates (SPI), clays (Na + ‐MMT), and eugenol an antimicrobial agent. Interactions between Na + ‐MMT and eugenol were evidenced by a shift of the d ‐spacing by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The addition of Na + ‐MMT (5 and 7.5% w/w) in SPI solution increased its shear thinning behavior and its consistency. Accordingly, a good exfoliation of clays in SPI films was observed. The glass transition temperature of SPI films was impacted by the clays addition ...

Semicrystalline polylactide (PLA) films with controlled morphology were produced by thermal crystallization to optimize the oxygen barrier properties. The crystalline morphology of PLA at the scales of the lamella and the spherulite was investigated and the mobile amorphous phase dynamics were studied. The crystalline morphology had a negligible impact on the oxygen diffusion coefficient. The occurrence of a rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) in the amorphous phase due to its insufficient decoupling from ...

Interested in developing gelatin-based nanocomposites using a spreading technique, this research aimed to study the effect of nanoparticles concentration on the rheological properties of nanocomposite-forming solutions (NFS) based on gelatin and montmorillonite (MMT). The NFS were produced with 5 and 8 g gelatin/100 g NFS; 30 g glycerol/100 g gelatin and 0, 5, 10 and 15 g MMT/100 g gelatin. Rheological tests were carried out in an AR2000 rheometer. Also, the dispersions of MMT in water were analyzed ...

It involved a cross-sectional, hospital-based study. A total of 3,904 teenagers with a single fetus gestation and gestational age (GA) at birth ≥ 37 weeks were included. A hierarchical model was built to analyze the dependent and independent variables adequacy of GWG: sociodemographic, care, obstetric and behavioral characteristics. The ...

Using a calibration model built from 14 compressed powders of reference materials doped with gold in solution, the gold concentration of 32, 6-sided, ore samples was determined by LIBS and then compared to those obtained by conventional laboratory techniques (gravimetry/atomic absorption). The studied samples are on average ~ 4 cm long and they were collected from 6 different gold mines of the Abitibi greenstone belt (Canada). LIBS measurements are found to be accurate for homogeneous powder samples ...

Background Environmental enrichment (EE) in laboratory animals improves neurological function and motor/cognitive performance, and is proposed as a strategy for treating neurodegenerative diseases. EE has been investigated in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease (HD), where increased social interaction, sensory stimulation, exploration, and physical activity improved survival. We have also shown previously that HD patients and R6/2 mice have disrupted circadian rhythms, treatment of which ...

Maintenance of snakes at Butantan Institute started in the last century, intending to produce a different antivenom serum to reduce death caused by snakebites. Through a successful campaign coordinated by Vital Brazil, farmers sent venomous snakes to Butantan Institute by the railway lines with no cost. From 1908 to 1962, the snakes were kept in an outdoor serpentarium, where venom extraction was performed every 15 days. During this period, the snake average survival was 15 days. Background: Many believe that the regular treatment for multibacillary (MB) leprosy cases could be shortened. A shorter treatment allowing uniformity in treatment for all cases renders case classification superfluous and therefore simplifies leprosy control. Objective: To evaluate the association between treatment duration and the trend in bacteriological index (BI) decrease over time among patients given Uniform MDT (UMDT) compared to those given regular MDT (RMDT). Methods: An open-label randomised ...

Leprosy will continue to be a public health problem for several decades. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that, for treatment purposes, leprosy cases be classified as either paucibacillary or multibacillary (MB). A uniform leprosy treatment regimen would simplify treatment and halve the treatment duration for MB patients. The clinical trial for uniform multidrug therapy (U-MDT) for leprosy patients (LPs) in Brazil is a randomised, open-label clinical trial to evaluate if the effectiveness ...
