This paper reports the effect of particle size within a resorbable composite on the in vivo degradation rate and host response. Resorbable composites based on poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) reinforced with tricalcium phosphate (TCP) have shown suitable degradation, biological and mechanical properties for bone repair. Composites with nano-sized TCP particles degrade more homogenously in vitro than equivalent composites with micro-sized particles. In this study, PLGA and PLGA/TCP composites ...

The enhanced biological and degradation properties of bioresorbable polymer matrix nanocomposites intended for use in orthopaedic applications have been demonstrated recently. However, at the moment there are only limited reports addressing their mechanical properties under physiological conditions, which is of central importance to the successful design of these nanocomposites. Here, we show that at room temperature in dry conditions, the incorporation of α-tricalcium phosphate nanoparticles into ...

In this paper, we explore the effects of hydroxyapatite microparticles and nanoparticles on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of injection moulded bioresorbable poly-l-lactide/hydroxyapatite composites intended for use in orthopaedics. The Tg of the nanocomposites were lower than those of the microcomposites. This was thought to be due to the larger surface area of well dispersed nanoparticles in the polymer matrix, leading to a larger interfacial area. The as-moulded composites were ...
