Chromosomal polymorphism resulting from two pericentric inversions in Akodon arviculoides (2n=14) has been described (YONENAGA, 1972a). In this paper the banding patterns are presented and identification of the inverted segments of the autosomal pairs 2 and 3 is made. The karyotype of Akodon sp., which varies in diploid number (2n-24 and 25), is described and shown to be due to the presence of a small submetacentric chromosome in the 2n=25 individuals. The karyotypes of two 2n=19 males studied show ...

Silver-stained cells from 13 specimens of Akodon arviculoides (2n = 14 and 15) were analyzed for the location and frequency of Ag-NOR’s. They were located terminally on four pairs of chromosomes, 3q, 4q, 5p, and Xp. In these 13 individuals, the number of Ag-NOR’s per cell varied between two and eight, and each chromosome had a characteristic pattern of frequency of NOR’s in each individual. Since in A. arviculoides a chromosomal polymorphism resulting from three ...

SUMMARYIn a sample of 13 animals (8 males and 5 females) of the spiny rat Proechimys iheringi theringi from three localities of the State of São Paulo (Casa Grande, Ubatuba and Iguape) the diploid numbers were 2n = 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65 chromosomes due to the presence of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minute supernumerary chromosomes, respectively. G- and C-band patterns, localization of the nucleolus organizer regions (NOR's) and R-banding obtained after 5-BrdUrd incorporation are presented.

SUMMARYKaryotypic data are presented for Tropidurus hispidus (Sauria, Iguanidae) collected at six different localities in Brazil. The specimens from all the populations share the same basic 2n = 36 karyotype characterized by 12 macrochromosomes and 24 microchromosomes. The X is an acrocentric microchromosome and the Y, a minute microchromosome. The mechanism of sex determination is of XX:XY type. Geographical karyotypic variations related to the presence or the absence of a prominent secondary constriction ...

SUMMARYThe distribution of Ag-NORs was analyzed in 25 specimens of Akodon aff. arviculoides (2n = 24 and 25). NORs occurred on chromosome arms 2q, 3p, 6p, 7q and lOq, as identified by successive Ag- and G-band staining. In one specimen with 2n = 25, the supernumerary B chromosome presented Ag-NORs on both arms but in 3 other animals this chromosome was never stained. The number of Ag-NORs per cell ranged from 1 to 10 and the staining pattern was characteristic for each chromosome pair in an individual. ...

The frogs of the Tribe Cophomantini present, in general, 2n = 24 karyotype, but data on Aplastodiscus showed variation in diploid number from 2n = 24 to 2n = 18. Five species were karyotyped, one of them for the first time, using conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques, with the aim to perform a comprehensive comparative analysis towards the understanding of chromosome evolution in light of the phylogeny. Aplastodiscus perviridis showed 2n = 24, A. arildae and A. eugenioi, 2n = 22, A. callipygius, ...

Thyroid function diagnosis is an important classification problem, and we made reanalysis of the human thyroid data, which had been analyzed by the multivariate analysis, by the two notable neural networks. One is the self-organizing map approach which clusters the patients and displays visually a characteristic of the distribution according to laboratory tests. We found that self-organizing map (SOM) consists of three well separated clusters corresponding to hyperthyroid, hypothyroid and normal, ...

We studied ten specimens of Physalaemus cuvieri collected at different localities in Brazil using conventional staining and banding techniques. All specimens had 2n = 22. There were karyotypic variants: distinct patterns in the number and chromosome localization of Ag-NORs as well as in the corresponding secondary constrictions. Preliminary C-banding patterns obtained for specimens from two localities are also suggestive of karyotypic differentiation in P. cuvieri.

We describe a new species of the Scinax catharinae Group from Municipality of Porto Seguro, State of Bahia northeastern Brazil. The new species is mainly characterized by its small size, nuptial pad dark colored, and compound pectoral fold. Additionally, we describe the structure of its nuptial pad and compare it with that of S. agilis. We also briefly discuss its phylogenetic relationships within Scinax.

Natural polyploidy has played an important role during the speciation and evolution of vertebrates, including anurans, with more than 55 described cases. The species of the Phyllomedusa burmeisteri group are mostly characterized by having 26 chromosomes, but a karyotype with 52 chromosomes was described in P. tetraploidea. This species was found in sintopy with P. distincta in two localities of São Paulo State (Brazil), where triploid animals also occur, as consequence of natural hybridisation. We ...

A new species of treefrog of the genus Scinax is described from southern Sao Paulo, Atlantic Forest, in southeastern Brazil. The new species is a member of the Scinax rubra group characterized by moderate size, head longer than wide, snout nearly rounded in profile and subacuminate in dorsal view. Descriptions of the advertisement call and karyotype, as well as data on natural history, are provided. The inclusion of the species assigned presently to S. x-signata group in the S. rubra group is proposed.

We describe a new species of the Scinax catharinae group from coastal forest in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. We also describe the karyotype and the advertisement call of the new species, which is composed by a multipulsed note. The hylid frog genus Scinax is the most species-rich within Hylinae, with more than 100 recognized species grouped in the S. catharinae and S. ruber clades. The karyotypes of 14 species of the S. catharinae clade and 14 of the S. ruber clade were analyzed, several of them for the first time. There are two alternate states associated with the size and morphology of pair 1, corresponding to the S. ...
