The performance of two up-flow anaerobic packed bed systems (UAPB) to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) from the Portuguese mines São Domingos and Tinoca was investigated. The response of bacterial populations to influent characteristics was also analysed by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE). Effective neutralisation (pH raised from 2.8 to 6.5) and removal of metals (>99%) and sulphate (>72%) were observed independently of the AMD source. TGGE fingerprinting and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA ...

Several microbial communities, obtained from uranium contaminated and non-contaminated samples, were investigated for their ability to remove uranium (VI) and the cultures capable for this removal were further assessed on their efficiency for chromium (VI) removal. The highest efficiency for removal of both metals was observed on a consortium from a non-contaminated soil collected in Monchique thermal place, which was capable to remove 91% of 22 mg L−1 U(VI) and 99% of 13 mg L −1 Cr(VI). We evaluated whether strength training (ST) performed prior to skeletal muscle cryolesion would act as a preconditioning, improving skeletal muscle regeneration and responsiveness to low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Wistar rats were randomly assigned into non-exercised (NE), NE plus muscle lesion (NE + LE), NE + LE plus LLLT (NE + LE + LLLT), strength training (ST), ST + LE, and ST + LE + LLLT. The animals performed 10 weeks of ST (climbing ladder; 3× week; 80% overload). Forty-eight hours after the last ST session, ...

The objective of this study was to investigate whether decreased baseline adiponectin levels are an independent risk factor for development of glucose intolerance in a population-based study of Japanese–Brazilians, a group with one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes worldwide. We examined 210 Japanese–Brazilians (97 male and 113 female, aged 56.7 ± 10.1 years) with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). Plasma adiponectin, insulin, fasting and 2-h plasma glucose and lipid profile were evaluated at ...

Abstract The dynamics of the bacterial populations in an up-flow anaerobic packed bed system (UAPB), applied in acid mine drainage treatment using wine wastes as carbon and nutrients source was elucidated by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) analysis. Moreover, TGGE fingerprints of the bacterial communities developed in a UAPB fed with wine wastes and a UAPB fed with pure ethanol were compared. TGGE fingerprinting and phylogenetic analysis showed that the composition of the community ...

The objective of this study is to assess the contribution of ADIPOQ variants to type 2 diabetes in Japanese Brazilians. We genotyped 200 patients with diabetes mellitus (100 male and 100 female, aged 55.0 years [47.5-64.0 years]) and 200 control subjects with normal glucose tolerant (NGT) (72 male and 128 female, aged 52.0 years [43.5-64.5 years]).Whereas each polymorphism studied (T45G, G276T, and A349G) was not significantly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the haplotype GGA was overrepresented ...

The mechanism of uranium (VI) removal by two anaerobic bacterial consortia, recovered from an uncontaminated site (consortium A) and other from an uranium mine (consortium U), was investigated. The highest efficiency of U (VI) removal by both consortia (97%) occurred at room temperature and at pH 7.2. Furthermore, it was found that U (VI) removal by consortium A occurred by enzymatic reduction and bioaccumulation, while the enzymatic process was the only mechanism involved in metal removal by consortium ...

Abstract Background Maturity‐onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a form of monogenic diabetes with autosomal dominant inheritance. To date, mutations in 11 genes have been frequently associated with this phenotype. In Brazil, few cohorts have been screened for MODY, all using a candidate gene approach, with a high prevalence of undiagnosed cases (MODY‐X). Methods We conducted a next‐generation sequencing target panel (tNGS) study to investigate, for the first time, a Brazilian cohort of MODY patients ...

Abstract As life expectancy continues to increase worldwide, age-related dysfunction will largely impact our societies in the future. Aging is well established to promote the deterioration of cognitive function and is the primary risk factor for the development of prevalent neurological disorders. Even in the absence of dementia, age-related cognitive decline impacts specific types of memories and brain structures in humans and animal models. Despite this, preclinical and clinical studies that investigate ...

Abstract Human ageing is a complex, multifactorial process characterised by physiological damage, increased risk of age-related diseases and inevitable functional deterioration. As the population of the world grows older, placing significant strain on social and healthcare resources, there is a growing need to identify reliable and easy-to-employ markers of healthy ageing for early detection of ageing trajectories and disease risk. Such markers would allow for the targeted implementation of strategies ...

The unprecedented rise in life expectancy observed in the last decades is leading to a global increase in the ageing population, and age-associated diseases became an increasing societal, economic, and medical burden. This has boosted major efforts in the scientific and medical research communities to develop and improve therapies to delay ageing and age-associated functional decline and diseases, and to expand health span.
