A kinetic study of the methanol steam reforming reaction was performed over a commercial CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst (Süd-Chemie, G66 MR), in the temperature range of 200–300 °C. The reactions considered in this work were methanol steam reforming (MSR) and reverse water gas shift (rWGS). Several MSR kinetic rate models developed by different authors were compared and the one was determined that best fitted the experimental data. A kinetic Langmuir–Hinshelwood model was proposed based on the work by Peppley ...

Diogo Mendes, Sandra , Silvano Tosti, José M. Sousa, Luı́s M. Madeira, Adélio Mendes,

In this work, an experimental and modeling study is described, focusing on the performance of a Pd–Ag membrane reactor recently proposed and suitable for the production of ultra-pure hydrogen. A packed-bed membrane reactor (MR) with a "finger-like" membrane configuration has been used for carrying out the water-gas shift reaction (WGS) in the region of low temperature operation using a simulated reformate feed. The experiments were performed under a broad range of operating conditions of temperature ( ...

The reaction of methanol steam reforming was studied in a carbon membrane reactor over a commercial CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst (Süd-Chemie, G66 MR). Carbon molecular sieve membranes supplied by Carbon Membranes Ltd. were tested at 150 °C and 200 °C. The carbon membrane reactor was operated at atmospheric pressure and with vacuum at the permeate side, at 200 °C. High methanol conversion and hydrogen recovery were obtained with low carbon monoxide permeate concentrations. A sweep gas configuration was simulated ...

This work focus on the advantages of adding a preferential carbon monoxide oxidation (PROX) reactor to a common methanol steam reforming (SR) membrane reactor (MR). The study was performed by using a one-dimensional mathematical model, assuming axially dispersed plug flow with pressure drop in both retentate and permeate sides. The finite volumes method was used for space discretization, being the dependent variables determined using high-resolution schemes. The simulation results showed clear advantages ...

Biosensors are pre-prepared diagnostic devices composed of at least one biological probe. These devices are envisaged for the practical identification of specific targets of microbiological interest. In recent years, the use of narrow-specific probes such as lectins has been proven to distinguish bacteria and glycoproteins based on their superficial glycomic pattern. For instance, Concanavalin A is a carbohydrate-binding lectin indicated as a narrow-specific biological probe for Gram-negative bacteria. ...

The applicability of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as tool for estimating mineral soil constituents was assessed over a wide range of highly weathered soils in Madagascar. The predictions were based on two types of methods, chemometric methods using multivariate calibration models from partial least squares (PLS) regressions, and the use of spectral signatures of specific minerals. The predictions of mineralogical properties of soils using chemometric methods were poor, except for ...

NAFLD was induced in male ob/ob mice using a methionine–choline deficient diet (MCD) concomitantly with oral SNAC fed solution (n = 5) or vehicle (control; n = 5) by gavage daily for 4 weeks. Livers were collected for histology and for assessing MTP by RT-qPCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry and immunogold electron microscopy analyses. Histological ...

Yeast biotechnologies are a cornerstone to modern lifestyle in all spheres of society, as their products are essential for the economy and industrial activities. The life cycle of many yeasts such as Candida alternates between diplophase and haplophase. Both ploidies can exist as stable cultures; however, it has been shown that wild haploid yeast efficiently cross in poor environments, whereas wild diploid species hybridize predominantly in rich nutrient surroundings. Some Candida species have had ...

The soil organic carbon (SOC) stock is an important attribute in the maintenance of ecosystem services by natural and agricultural ecosystems. In the humid tropics, slash-and-burn cultivation for food production and establishment of pastures has frequently led to soil degradation. In the eastern Brazilian Amazonia, we assessed impacts of different land-use systems on the SOC stock and some chemical properties of soils. Four land-use systems were studied: shifting cultivation (SC), pasture (PA), mixed ...
