We present a new proof of the convergence of the N −particle Schrödinger dynamics for bosons towards the dynamics generated by the Hartree equation in the mean-field limit. For a restricted class of two-body interactions, we obtain convergence estimates uniform in $${\hbar}$$ , up to an exponentially small remainder. For $${\hbar = 0}$$ , the classical dynamics in the mean-field limit is given by the Vlasov equation.

The study of eye movements has become popular in many fields of science. However, using the preprocessed output of an eye tracker without scrutiny can lead to low-quality or even erroneous data. For example, the sampling rate of the eye tracker influences saccadic peak velocity, while inadequate filters fail to suppress noise or introduce artifacts. Despite previously published guiding values, most filter choices still seem motivated by a trial-and-error approach, and a thorough analysis of filter ...

Enzyme immobilization is of high interest for industrial applications. However, immobilization may compromise enzyme activity or stability due to the harsh conditions which have to be applied. The authors therefore present a new and improved crosslinked layer-by-layer (cLbL) approach. Two different model enzymes (acid phosphatase and β-galactosidase) are immobilized under mild conditions on biocompatible, monodisperse, sub-micrometer poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) particles. The resulting PLGA enzyme ...

The SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein is synthesized as a large precursor protein and must be activated by proteolytic cleavage into S1 and S2. A recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) expressing native, full-length S protein (MVA-SARS-2-S) is currently under investigation as a candidate vaccine in phase I clinical studies. Initial results from immunogenicity monitoring revealed induction of S-specific antibodies binding to S2, but low-level antibody responses to the S1 domain. Follow-up ...

Optical nonlinearities are known to provide a coherent coupling between the amplitude and phase of the light, which can result in the formation of periodic waveforms. Lasers that emit such waveforms are referred to as optical frequency combs. Here we show that Bloch gain - a nonclassical phenomenon that was first predicted in the 1930s - plays an essential role in comb formation in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). We develop a self-consistent theoretical model that considers all aspects of comb formation: ...

Abstract Since modern foods are unnaturally enriched in single metabolites, it is important to understand which metabolites are sensed by the human body and which are not. We previously showed that the fatty acid stearic acid (C18:0) signals via a dedicated pathway to regulate mitofusin activity and thereby mitochondrial morphology and function in cell culture. Whether this pathway is poised to sense changes in dietary intake of C18:0 in humans is not known. We show here that C18:0 ingestion rapidly ...

Iron is mostly devoted to the hemoglobinization of erythrocytes for oxygen transport. However, emerging evidence points to a broader role for the metal in hematopoiesis, including the formation of the immune system. Iron availability in mammalian cells is controlled by iron-regulatory protein 1 (IRP1) and IRP2. We report that global disruption of both IRP1 and IRP2 in adult mice impairs neutrophil development and differentiation in the bone marrow, yielding immature neutrophils with abnormally high ...

Among the important factors for culture is fertilization, which can interfere in production and fruit quality. Silicon (Si) is one of the little studied in fertilization, which demonstrated some beneficial to several different cultures. The linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) has recently moved into the spotlight of research on frequency comb generation in semiconductor lasers. Here we present a novel modulation experiment that enables direct measurement of the spectrally resolved LEF in a laser frequency comb. By utilizing a phase-sensitive technique, we are able to extract the LEF for each individual comb mode in any laser type. We first investigate and verify this universally applicable technique using Maxwell–Bloch simulations. ...

Cage instability or highly dynamic cage movement can have a strong influence on the performance of rolling bearings. In addition to very loud and disturbing noises ("squeal"), bearing failure due to cage fracture can occur. This article deals with two topics: the general classification of cage motions and the prediction of application-dependent cage motions to prevent cage instability during operation. The dependencies of the unstable cage movement on the bearing's load and geometric characteristics ...

Quantum cascade detectors (QCD) are photovoltaic mid-infrared detectors based on intersubband transitions. Owing to the sub-picosecond carrier transport between subbands and the absence of a bias voltage, QCDs are ideally suited for high-speed and room temperature operation. Here, we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of 4.3 µm wavelength QCDs optimized for large electrical bandwidth. The detector signal is extracted via a tapered coplanar waveguide (CPW), which was impedance- ...

Genomic rearrangement of the antigen receptor loci is initiated by the two lymphoid-specific proteins Rag-1 and Rag-2. Introduction Drug development for neurodegenerative diseases such as Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is limited by a lack of validated, sensitive biomarkers of pharmacodynamic response in affected tissue and disease progression. Studies employing neuroimaging measures to track FRDA have thus far been limited by their small sample sizes and limited follow up. TRACK-FA, a longitudinal, multi-site, and multi-modal neuroimaging natural history study, aims to address these shortcomings by enabling better understanding ...

ABSTRACT Tomato is the most important vegetable species and has a strong bottleneck effect in its domestication and evolution. In exploring the existing genetic variability in commercial germplasm, germplasm has been proven to be an excellent alternative to obtain inbred lines in order to provide superior new hybrids in the future. In this sense, the objective of this study was to estimate the genetic distance among commercial processing tomato hybrids via agronomical and quality postharvest fruit ...

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) comprises a heterogeneous group of primary immunodeficiencies, a proportion of which are due to mutations in either of the 2 recombination activating genes (RAG)-1 and -2, which mediate the process of V(D)J recombination leading to the assembly of antigen receptor genes. It is reported here that the clinical and immunologic phenotypes of patients bearing mutations in RAGs are more diverse than previously thought and that this variability is related, in part, ...

Abstract The dynamic behavior of a cage can have a significant influence on the performance and the noise of a rolling bearing. In case of an unstable or high-frequency cage movement, vibrations are transmitted to the adjacent machine elements and the environment, which can influence the operating behavior of the whole system. In addition, a loud noise can often be perceived, which is referred to in the literature as cage rattling or squealing. In this paper, characteristics of different cage movements ...

Rolling bearings have to meet the highest requirements in terms of guidance accuracy, energy efficiency, and dynamics. An important factor influencing these performance criteria is the cage, which has different effects on the bearing dynamics depending on the cage’s geometry and bearing load. In this paper, machine learning algorithms were used ...
