From March 1991 to February 1992, 276 stool samples from 131 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (average, 2.1 samples per patient) and stool samples from 81 presumed immunocompetent individuals were studied for the prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp. and Isospora belli. The techniques employed were a modified formol-ether concentration, carbol (phenol) auramine staining, and a modified Kinyoun acid-fast method. Three polymethine dyes, which fluoresce at 780–820 nm, are separated by reversed-phase chromatography and detected fluorimetrically with a semiconductor laser for excitation. The detection limit for anhydro-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl-1,1′-bis(4-sulfomethyl)-4,5,4′,5′-dibenzoindotricarbocyanine hydroxide (sodium salt) is 0.3 pg, which is almost three orders of magnitude better than the value obtained by conventional fluorimetry.

We argue that, at least a fraction of the newly discovered population of ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group constitute the fossil relic of a once ubiquitous population of dwarf galaxies formed before reionization with circular velocities smaller than $v_{c}^{cr} \sim 20$ km/s. We present several arguments in support of this model. The number of luminous Milky Way satellites inferred from observations is larger than the estimated number of dark halos in the Galaxy that have, or ...

Simultaneous enantiomer-selective fluorous-phase delabeling and kinetic resolution was achieved by lipase-catalyzed alcoholysis of highly fluorinated esters of racemic alcohols. The separation of the fast-reacting delabeled enantiomers and the slow-reacting fluorous-phase labeled enantiomers was performed very efficiently by partition in an organic/fluorous biphasic solvent system.

A novel strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of polyhydroxypiperidines, which can be considered as iminoglycitols or 2,6-dideoxyazasugars, was developed. α-Benzolsulfonylamino esters served as a C2N building block while 2-bromo-3-(bromomethyl)oxazoles and -thiazoles contributed a C3-unit to the final piperidine ring. At first a dihydropyridine ring was established via alkylation and bromine−lithium exchange. The keto group of the resulting 5,6-dihydro[1,3]oxazolo- and 5,6-dihydro[1,3]thiazolo[ ...

Numerous systems have been developed to display large collections of data for urban contexts; however, most have focused on layering of single dimensions of data and manual calculations to understand relationships within the urban environment. Furthermore, these systems often limit the userâs perspectives on the data, thereby diminishing the userâs spatial understanding of the viewing region. In this paper, we introduce a highly interactive urban visualization tool that provides intuitive understanding ...

We present a new method for generating initial conditions for LCDM N-body simulations which provides the dynamical range necessary to follow the evolution and distribution of the fossils of the first galaxies on Local Volume, 5-10 Mpc, scales. The initial distribution of particles represents the position, velocity and mass distribution of the dark and luminous halos extracted from pre-reionization simulations. We confirm previous results that ultra-faint dwarfs have properties compatible with being ...

We use a new set of cold dark matter simulations of the local universe to investigate the distribution of fossils of primordial dwarf galaxies within and around the Milky Way. Throughout, we build upon previous results showing agreement between the observed stellar properties of a subset of the ultra-faint dwarfs and our simulated fossils. Here, we show that fossils of the first galaxies have galactocentric distributions and cumulative luminosity functions consistent with observations. In our model, ...

Abstract Our objective was to compare polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure estimates based on survey, biological monitoring, and geographic information system (GIS) methods. The 304 participants in this study supplied a urine sample and completed questionnaires about exposure to potential PAH sources. We assayed urine samples for 1-hydroxypyrene-O-glucuronide (1-OHPG), the major metabolite of pyrene, a common PAH. We used a GIS to estimate traffic exhaust exposure using vehicle count data ...

California is the largest agricultural state in the United States and home to some of the world’s highest breast cancer rates. The objective of our study was to evaluate whether California breast cancer rates were elevated in areas with recent high agricultural pesticide use. We identified population-based invasive breast cancer cases from the California Cancer Registry for 1988–1997. We used California’s pesticide use reporting data to select pesticides for analysis based on use volume, carcinogenic ...

We examined the association between residential proximity to agricultural pesticide use and breast cancer incidence among members of the California Teachers Study cohort, a large study of professional school employees with extensive information on breast cancer risk factors, followed for cancer incidence since 1995. Malaria, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis have an overwhelming impact in the poorest countries in the world due to their prevalence, virulence and drug resistance ability. Currently, there is inadequate armory of drugs for the treatment of malaria, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. This underscores the continuing need for the discovery and development of new anti-protozoal drugs. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research aimed at the discovery and development of new effective and safe ...
