Abstract CD28 provides an important costimulatory signal in T cell activation that regulates multiple cellular processes including proliferation and survival. Several signal transduction pathways are activated by CD28; however, the precise biochemical mechanism by which CD28 regulates T cell function remains controversial. Retroviral gene transfer into primary T cells from TCR-transgenic, CD28-deficient mice was used to determine the specific sequences within CD28 that determine function. Discrete ...

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (TSCS) has demonstrated potential to beneficially modulate spinal cord motor and autonomic circuitry. We are interested in pairing cervical TSCS with other forms of nervous system stimulation to enhance synaptic plasticity in circuits serving hand function. We use a novel configuration for cervical TSCS in which the anode is placed anteriorly over ~C4-C5 and the cathode posteriorly over ~T2-T4. We measured the effects of single pulses of TSCS paired with single ...

A novel spiroorthocarbonate with two thiol groups (SOC DITHIOL) was synthesized. This monomer was formulated with dimethacrylate monomers used in dental resins and photopolymerized with an LED dental lamp. The presence of the thiol groups in the monomer enabled it to react with the double bonds of the dimethacrylate monomers by means of the thiol–ene mechanism. Additionally, the SOC DITHIOL underwent cationic ring-opening polymerization, producing the corresponding poly(ether-carbonates). SOC DITHIOL ...

Abstract Shrinkage that takes place during polymerizations induces internal stress in polymeric materials generating a series of problems like poor adhesion to substrates and delamination in coatings or microcracks and microvoids in composites. Some additives like spiro orthocarbonates can reduce or eliminate this shrinkage. This paper deals with the synthesis of novel diol spiro orthocarbonates (DIOL SOCs) and their effect as anti‐shrinkage additives in the photopolymerization of the monomer 3,4‐ ...

Abstract A facile synthesis of isomeric dihydroxyl spiroorthocarbonates (SOC-DIOL) and a hydroxyl hemi-spiroorthocarbonate (SOC-OL) is reported. The SOC-OL displayed a plasticization effect when compounded with an epoxy resin derived from bisphenol-A resulting in a decrease of Tg. The analysis of volume change revealed that the SOC-OL reduced by 78% the level of shrinkage in comparison with the polymer where this additive was not added. The SOC-DIOL was even more effective than SOC-OL as antishrinking ...

Ageing is associated with changes in biological processes, including reductions in cognitive functions and gut microbiome diversity. However, not much is known about the relationship between cognition and the microbiome with increasing age. Therefore, we examined the relationship between the gut microbiome and cognition in 69 healthy participants aged 60-75 years. The gut microbiome was analysed with the 16S rRNA sequencing method. The cognitive assessment included the Cognitive Drug Research computerised ...

Abstract The grain from 116 marrowfat pea breeding lines was assessed subjectively using current visual methods and then analysed objectively for L * a * b * colour, hydration capacity and cooking quality. The data show that the current method of selecting genotypes by subjective methods is not able to select marrowfat peas for specific processing uses. However, an objective measure, the − a * value of the dry grain, was a very good predictor ( p < 0.001) for the hydrated and cooked green colour. Cultivars which ...

The effect of an infusion of two doses of peptide YY (PYY), a novel putative gastrointestinal hormone, has been assessed on mouth to caecum intestinal transit time and on the rate of gastric emptying after ingestion of an inert 200 ml liquid meal thought unlikely to interrupt fasting gastrointestinal motility patterns. A low dose of PYY was chosen to give plasma concentrations within the range seen postprandially in healthy subjects, while the high dose mimicked the raised levels seen in several ...

Abstract It is well known that bicyclic compounds like spiro‐orthocarbonates (SOCs) have the ability to reduce or eliminate the shrinkage produced during polymerization. In the work reported, four different SOCs were prepared, two of them with one and two hydroxyl groups, respectively, another with two alkoxy groups and one reference compound without substituents. It was found that the SOCs with hydroxyl groups increased the photopolymerization rate and conversion of an epoxycycloaliphatic monomer, ...
