Very little is known about Albert Eckhout, one of the artists accompanying Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen to Brazil. Between 1653 and 1663, Eckhout remained in the Court of Saxony, but a great part of the works produced during this period was destroyed in 1945 during the bombing of Dresden. Among the few surviving canvases attributed to the Dutch artist, the most noticeable are the eighty oils of tropical birds that adorn the ceiling of the main room of Hoflössnitz, a small palace built between ...

In a study of associations between lead in blood and in tap-water, 113 blood samples and 140 tap-water samples of schoolchildren aged 9 to 12 years were analysed. Median and maximum values of blood lead were 8.3 and 34.0 micrograms/dl and of lead in tap water 24 and 2600 micrograms/l. Lead pipes were in use in some 50% of the houses. The pH values of the tap-water varied from 5.0 to 8.1. Both factors involved, i.e., lead pipes and acidic tap-water, have to be amended in order to reduce lead exposure ...

Sediments contain a huge number and diversity of microorganisms that are important for the flux of material and are pivotal to all major biogeochemical cycles. Sediments of reservoirs are affected by a wide spectrum of allochthous and autochthonous influences providing versatile environments along the flow of water within the reservoir. Here we report on the microbial diversity in sediments of the mesotrophic drinking water reservoir Saidenbach, Germany, featuring a pronounced longitudinal gradient ...
