Recent advancements in deep-sea expeditions have made possible to sample adequate quantities of deep-sea organisms over wide geographical ranges for population genetic studies. Scalpellum stearnsii is a common stalked barnacle that occurs in the mesobenthic environment (>200 m depth) throughout the West Pacific Ocean and covers several major deep-sea basins. The present study examined the diversity and genetic differentiation of S. stearnsii populations from the East China Sea, West Philippine Basin, ...

A number of stylasterid corals are known to act as host species and create refuges for a variety of mobile and sessile organisms, which enhances their habitat complexity. These include annelids, anthozoans, cirripeds, copepods, cyanobacteria, echinoderms, gastropods, hydroids and sponges. Here we report the first evidence of a diverse association between stylasterids and scalpellid pedunculate barnacles and describe a new stylasterid species, Errinalabrosa, from the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago. ...

The sexuality of large (non-dwarf) individuals and the characteristics of eggs, larvae and dwarf males were investigated in the pedunculate barnacle Scalpellum stearnsii . All 103 large individuals collected in this study were not hermaphrodites but females. The major length axis of the egg was on average 0.50 mm, which was larger than that in most thoracican barnacles with planktotrophic larvae. The larvae hatched as nauplii and metamorphosed into cyprids without feeding (i.e. lecithotrophic development). ...

Two new species of cirripedes are described from mid Burdigalian (Ottnangian) deposits in Lower Bavaria (Germany) and Upper Austria. A third species, "Arcoscalpellum" sp., is left in open nomenclature. Scillaelepas danningeri sp. nov. is the seventh extinct species belonging to the genus Scillaelepas. It is characterized by: a tergum with the occludent margin much longer than the upper carinal margin and internally with the apical part raised and marked by growth-lines cut by fine radial striae; a ...

The pedunculate barnacle Scalpellum projectum Nilsson-Cantell, 1930, was described based on benthic material from a telegraph cable recovered from deep waters off Antofagasta (~23oS). No new records have been reported for this species worldwide since its original description. Six adult females of S. projectum were collected during recent studies of communities associated with methane seeps. The material was taken from three stations located between 34o42' and 36o22'S and at depths of 846 to 922 m. ...

H. C. Lea (1843, 1846), in papers on molluscs from the Tertiary of Virginia, described and illustrated the scutum and carina of a scalpellid barnacle, which he mistakenly identified as two new species of molluscs. The scutum was described as Avicula multangulata (after 1843 as A. multangula ) and the carina as Patella acinaces . Conrad (1863), Meek (1864), d'Orbigny (1852), and Heilprin (1884) listed these species in their enumerations of the Tertiary molluscan fauna. Meyer (1888, p. 138) was the first to ...
