Eighty-four cancer patients at risk of infection because of neutropenia were randomized to receive nalidixic acid as an alternative to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) for infection prophylaxis. Infections were documented significantly earlier and more often among patients who entered the trial with neutrophil counts of less than 0.1 X 10(9)/liter. TMP-SMX recipients experienced fewer microbiologically documented infections and bacteremias and were free of infection for a higher proportion ...

We discovered a thermostable enzyme from the archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus ( Pfu ), which increases yields of PCR product amplified with Pfu DNA polymerase. A high molecular mass (>250 kDa) complex with PCR-enhancing activity was purified from Pfu extracts. The complex is a multimer of two discrete proteins, P45 and P50, with significant similarity to bacterial dCTP deaminase/dUTPase and DNA flavoprotein, respectively. When tested in PCR, only recombinant P45 exhibited enhancing activity. P45 was shown ...

Bradley Scott Seebach, Nathan Intrator, Philip Lieberman, Leon N. Cooper,

An unsupervised neural network model inductively acquires the ability to distinguish categorically the stop consonants of English, in a manner consistent with prenatal and early postnatal auditory experience, and without reference to any specialized knowledge of linguistic structure or the properties of speech. This argues against the common assumption that linguistic knowledge, and speech perception in particular, cannot be learned and must therefore be innately specified.

Post-stroke homonymous visual field (PSHVF) loss has functional and driving implications for patients. Automated, as opposed to confrontational, assessment of PSHVF loss has the potential to provide a more reliable indicator for field loss and thus ability to drive. Sixty-one consecutive stroke admissions were assessed at 9 months post-stroke. Driving status and the patient's awareness of any visual field loss was ascertained. Patients underwent formal perimetric visual field testing using a Humphrey ...

Previously developed suites of models integrate irrigation water supply and demand management for simplified surface reservoir supply systems. A central stochastic dynamic programming model is supported by simulation models, including a soil water‐plant growth model. That modeling is extended herein to include decisions about timing and quantity of reservoir water releases into the delivery system, resulting in the integration of supply, demand, and delivery management. Irrigators have rights to ...

Bilateral internal carotid artery dissections have been reported, but spontaneous bilateral dissections are rare. Internal carotid artery dissection can present with a spectrum of symptoms ranging from headache to completed stroke. Two cases of spontaneous bilateral carotid artery dissection are presented, one with headache and minimal symptoms and the other with a stroke syndrome. No cause could be found in either case, making the dissections completely spontaneous. Bilateral internal carotid artery ...

α-Azido acids have been used in solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) for almost 20 years. Here we report that peptides bearing an N-terminal α-azidoaspartate residue undergo elimination of an azide ion when treated with reagents that are commonly used for removing the Fmoc group during SPPS. We also report an alternative solid-phase route to the synthesis of an analog of daptomycin that uses a reduced number of α-azido amino acids and without elimination of an azide ion.

Daptomycin and A54145 are homologous lipopeptide antibiotics that permeabilize the cell membranes of Gram-positive bacteria. Membrane permeabilization depends on the presence of both phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and calcium, and it involves the formation of oligomeric transmembrane pores that consist of approximately 6-8 subunits. We here show that each lipopeptide molecule binds two calcium ions in separable, successive steps. The first calcium ion causes the lipopeptide molecule to bind to the target ...

Abstract The purpose of this study is to statistically and empirically evaluate the effectiveness of the gun control laws that have been adopted by states and municipalities. States are divided into two groups: states with no restrictions as to gun use and states with restrictions ( e.g. , waiting periods, license, etc.). Multiple linear regression models are used to evaluate the relationship between the number of gun related deaths in 1990 and sets of determinants which include state laws and regulations ...

Positioned at the intersection of the head, body and forelimb, the pectoral girdle has the potential to function in both feeding and locomotor behaviours-although the latter has been studied far more. In ray-finned fishes, the pectoral girdle attaches directly to the skull and is retracted during suction feeding, enabling the ventral body muscles to power rapid mouth expansion. However, in sharks, the pectoral girdle is displaced caudally and entirely separate from the skull (as in tetrapods), raising ...
